New Story: Turnover margin the glaring statistic for Tigers

Turnover margin the glaring statistic for Tigers

There are plenty of terrific numbers for the Clemson football team through its first seven games. But the bad statistic that jumps off the screen, especially after the past two home games, is turnover margin. Full Story »

Offense is underpergorming.

SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH. did you know, and surely you did since you are tiger woods, that before the lewisville game the starting 5 on offense had played together as a unit 25% of the plays on o. dabo said, and he did, get a lot of young guys pt. seems the oline, which have played together as a unit the last 3 games have performed pretty #### good. we had 30 1st downs for gods sake on saturday. fact of the matter is we had trouble with drops the 1st couple of games and turnovers the last 2 home games. last i checked the oline does not catch the ball or carry the ball. without the turnovers neither of the last 2 home games are even close.

As valid as your points apply to pass blocking, if you think our run blocking is up-to-par, then we haven't been watching the same games. As I recall, SC State and Boston College are the only games we rushed more than 150 yards in a game. That stat needs to change. This past weekend, sure, Watson there for 378 yards (amazing) but after using 5 running backs, we only amassed 117 yards on 39 touches, (3 yards per play average). I'm not blaming the line 100%, Elliot needs to flip some pages in the playbook. But to pretend as if the line has been stellar in run blocking is foolish.

How many yards might wayne have gotten saturday. he was sure off to a good start. just saying, if you remember the troy game, the 2nd series we have almost totally new personel on the oline. seems in the past dabo would get a good lead, then play the other guys. for whatever reason he is doing it differently this year. lets just hold onto the ball and i am thinking we would not even be talking about the o.

The O-line is having to contend with 5 blocking 7 or more. Every team we've played has loaded up the box, trying to stuff our running game and, obviously, it is working. Of course, that is one reason we had 378 yards passing last Saturday. You can't blame the low rushing yardage on play calling and for the most part, not on the O-line either.
The O-line might not be stellar but to blame the poor rushing results on the O-line, when they are contending with 7 and 8 men in the box on nearly every play, is just plain foolish.

A lifetime ago, say the 60's, 70's and 80's, teams ran what was called max protect. Only 2 receivers went out with everyone else blocking. Give Watson time to throw. This is also a good set to roll out a back as a safe throw. Say use a Feaster for this and see what he can do with the ball in open space.

But I'm old, what do i know?

long ball because Deshaun usually misses it.

If Deshaun threw it like he did last year we'd be killing people.

He's just in a slump.

Yes it does..

But dropping the ball on the 2 and the 10 and punts and tossing interceptions to wide open DB, well, good luck pinning that on the OL. Gallman's fumble is to be understood, he got tackled by a helmet that should have resulted in a game disqualification.

Stop dropping the ball.

the offense does well it's the scoring that's lacking

With a top 10 defense, the offense doesn't need to be spectacular. Just need to clean up the red zone turnovers and we will win most games comfortably.

I agree but turnovers are so unpredictable. How do you have 5 turnovers in a game, then none in the next game, and then 4 in the next one??? Same players, same coaches, same coaching. It is just plain weird, and, like you pointed out, without the turnovers, we beat those teams badly. If we manage to avoid turnovers against FSU, I predict we absolutely crush them.

It's called focus...outside of a huge hit (like the one Gallman took cause it was clear he was knocked out), most of our fumbles seem to happen when someone is fighting for extra yards, and thus, lose their focus on ball security as they are more concerned with fighting for more yards. Great players do both, and our guys are great, they just don't always have the focus of great players.

deep ball more often we'd be killing folks. That would put more points on the board, eliminate some turnovers because of shorter drives and open things up for the running game.

It does not take a genius to figure that one out. We are 7-0 so it does not matter.
