New Story: Trip to Lane Stadium offers a real test for the Tigers

Trip to Lane Stadium offers a real test for the Tigers

Many fans and analysts are going to automatically compare Clemson’s road game against Virginia Tech on Saturday to the Tigers’ win at Louisville a couple of weeks ago. Both games featured a road trip at night against a top-25 opponent, so they’re just about the same, right? There are a couple of problems with that line of thinking. Although I don't consider myself to be a true Hokie, I did go there for post grad. work and usually attend at least one game a year with my CU roommate who just retired from Tech's faculty. Believe it when they say it's a good atmosphere for the home team. Not as good as CU's, but it can get really noisy. The last time we played there it was a miserable, cold rain, night. But we were able to take the crowd out of the game fairly early, and keep them there, unlike at the ACC CG last year. We should have more depth than Tech, and if the offence can play with confidence I think we can win. But if it turns into a defensive struggle hold on to your seats. Just for what it's worth. Go Tigers.

The way I look at it

A home crowd, no matter where you play, is only as good as the team they field. See FSU/Clemson in Death Valley 2013 for a prime example. Let's hope the Tigers nullify that home crowd early. Go Tigers!!!

In college football the home crowd can definitely make a difference. I've seen it happen in Death Valley many times (think the crowd wasn't a factor when ND came to the Valley a couple of years ago?) since I was a student in the 80's and take great pride in being a part of that home field advantage. I've never been to Blacksburg but if it is even in the same discussion with Death Valley we need to be prepared for it. Dabo has always prepared the team well and I'm sure they will be ready. GO TIGERS!!!!!

Been to Lane Stadium and it can get raucus, but it is not,

in my opinion, comparable to Death Valley!!
It will certainly help to control the momentum and try to get their fans out of the game as soon as possible. The longer they maintain hope, the longer it will take for us to pull away.

The lackluster performance last week may have been the best thing that could have happened prior to this game against VT, as the team has had a sharp week of practice and should be very focused!

In the end, much like we've seen thus far, our overall talent and depth will wear them out late.

Go Tigers!!!

Off topic just a tiny bit. While we are talking about tough places to play, who would you guys consider one of the toughest stadiums that our Tigers have played in that you have been, to where fan noise can make a difference, over the past 10-15 years. For me, other than the coots, no other than UGA's Sanford Stadium. The fan base is as bad as the usuc fan base, if not worse!!! If there is such a thing of two alike, it is usuc and UGA fans with both places being tough places to play!!!

I agree the UGA and So Car fans are some of the worst in terms of rudeness and poor treatment of opposing fans. The atmosphere between the hedges can get tough but I don't think they impact the game like we do in the Valley. And the coot fans can't come close to it!!! I think playing in Tallahassee is as tough as either of those places.

I can't disagree bc I've never been to FSU or VT stadiums, and my mistake is not saying the toughest that you had been to but, just watching on the TV, FSU surely looks to be a tough place to play!!! I went back and corrected it.;)

I've been to Doak Campbell (when we've lost), I've been to Georgia (when we've lost), I've been to Williams Brice (once when we lost, but mostly when we've won), I've been to Lane Stadium (when we've lost).

The Doak bunch is very arrogant, but not loud or intimidating by any stretch. The chant gets old quick.

Georgia folks are hands down the worst fan base I've encountered.

S. Carolina is just scummy.

But Lane was definitely the most intimidating opposing stadium I've been to.

Daniel, I think the bottom line is the talent differential on both sides of the ball and the quality of opponent differential over 4 games this year. Yeah, home field helps for sure. But the factors above are even bigger and not addressed sufficiently.

Hokies are in the Eye of the Tiger.
