Elliott's comments need to be absorbed by all Tiger fans. In the Clemson offensive scheme, it's the totality of the offense that must be learned...not a specific role in a silo. Mentally a player must have it and, psyche-wise, they have to be selfless and team-focused. It's why not all 5-stars are created equal. Food for thought when the ZW's of the world pass Clemson by, or others receive no offer from Dabo & Co.

He's the best pass blocking RB on the roster and he is does not shy away from contact in blitz pickup.

I'm all in with TE's approach. It's a certainty the RB's know the expectations, so it'll be interesting to see the starting season pecking order.

Omg how about one who protects the qb with the treat that we can actually run the ball and is threat to score in multiple ways. Qbs never had issue with spiller he was too dangerous to blitz on.

I mean if that's the only job qualification just put a tight end back there and say the hell with running backs. Just run two tight end sets with a slot tight end protecting the qbs blind side.

I see coach Elliott's point. But it occurs to me that we remember great running backs (Herschel Walker, Barry Sanders, Delvin Cook, Eric Dickerson, O.J. Simpson, etc, etc) because they can run, break tackles, make guys miss, score touchdowns, scare opposing defenses. I don't hear a lot about their pass blocking, as important as that may be.

make this a moot point? In other words, unless we have a QB like Watson, doesn't it make sense that we use the RB as more of a running back. Kelly seems to be a different QB with his running ability better than his passing ability?

That is, if Kelly indeed is going to start. Perhaps the coaching staff is tipping off its choice by saying they are concerned with pass blocking skills. Do I see Hunter Johnson in our future?

productivity of the QB. When you have Watson back there it's incredibly important because a) he's the best weapon on the offense, and b) his long-term health is the most important thing to protect on the team.
With an average or below average QB back there it's a bit less important to pass block extremely well, and bit more important to be able to pick up yards and hit big plays in the running game.

Only if he wants everything to be about just him.
The blocking/selflessness translates to the NFL, which bumps up a players draft status, just as his measureables will. A 5* RB out of Clemson would be a complete back.

At the risk of making mistakes, but attempting to set the record straight on the importance of the RB, here's my thoughts.
The RB is critical to the spread offense equally with the QB and oline. It's a team effort. The oline creates the running lanes on a run and protects the QB on passes.
The QB must make the reads and be the first ball handler to initiate the play.
The RB must make the run, hit the blocking lane and importantly protect the QB in a pass situation when an undetected blitzes occurs.
To me this works well when a good offense has balance across the line, QB, and RB. When you emphasize one aspect, like a preference for QB who prefers to run, you strengthen the defense to challenge the pass and take away the run.
This was the genius of Watson. He was great at the QB read and even better at extending the play to scramble for yards or hit the open receiver.
Elliot's point is we need the balance offense to put pressure on the opposing D and the RB must be more than a runner. He must protect the QB at all costs and catch a pass when needed. If our #1 RB can block, run with power and speed and catch passes out of the backfield, we'll be near unstoppable as our oline is there.
Fall camp will get us that RB.

Indeed, if the running back can block, run, catch and if the qb can read, run, pass and if the O-line can pass block and open running lanes with equal brilliance, and the receivers can run perfect routes, make all the catches and block downfield, Clemson's offense will be unstoppable. Oh, and let's not forget 100% on field goals and extra points. Obviously, I jest. The reason I believe it might be nice to have a breakawy runner is because he would make up for deficiencies in other areas. And let's face it, just about every offense in the country has some weak point. Great players, be they qbs, running backs, receivers, are difference makers. They go out and make great plays. Picking up a blitz, though important, is not as important, IMO, as breaking a tackle or two and running 45 yards to paydirt.

How quick we forget. Last year disproves your point, for one year at least. Having said this, I still remember thinking on any given play, CJ Spiller can break it. This by itself keeps Ds honest to a degree. Food for thought.

Au contraire, last year Clemson had a number of game breaking players- DW4, Gallman, Williams, Scott and Leggett. I don't seem to recall Fuller being a game breaker, though he may indeed turn into one this year. Okay, so let's say Fuller is the pass blocking back. I guess this means the Tigers will be relying on a passing qb. Most seem to think Kelly Bryant is not that guy. I'm not sure. Hunter Johnson may be the next Clemson qb if pass blocking is the number one priority. Am I wrong about this?

Gallman wasn't a C.J. Spiller type back either. He was a tough runner, but he wasn't going to win a footrace with any DBs.
His pass blocking, however, was a thing of beauty.
C.J. Fuller is a better receiver than Gallman and he's been getting better in the rest of his game. We'll be alright.

And Gallman benefitted by the best Clemson QB ever. This is not the situation in 2017. Make no mistake last year's championship was a team effort compliments of Deshaun Watson. This year will be more about the coaches. No more easy button putting it all on Deshaun. The 1st time Kelly throws an INT and Feaster takes it to the house, Elliott will change his approach. But Elliott has the right idea - holding your RB accountable for blocking is a no-brainer but will not result in Fornett, Guice, Gurley, and Zeus types picking Clemson. There is some trade-off and this season is a complete mystery at present? Who will step up - we know D-line. Who else?

Gallman is no where close to CJ lol or even Andre Ellington. He was a good serviceable back and he ran hard but nothing like Andre, CJ, or Sammy type player. Those guys had a gear that you were like woa is he gonna score on any play. We do have great WR talent but if #28 doesn't touch the field and they don't use him in the passing game he should be asking questions cause he's worked hard and kept his mouth shut down everything right but if he's the best runner, the fastest rb, the best receiver out of the backfield, and the second best blocker or tied for second I'll take him. I'd rather have CJ Spiller type threat in the game and tell the lineman to step up and just ask the to be willing to have the heart to throw himself out there. I mean based upon this argument just put Christian Wilkins in and have him play both ways..... I'm down for that! Lol. But you know the guy obviously knows what he's talking about they haven't let us down to much. So I'll just keep my coaching to madden lol
