Thursday night practice news and notes: Bryant listening to Dantzler

The first day of fall practice is in the books, and we have a few more team-related news and notes to pass along, including the fact that quarterback Kelly Bryant has found a mentor in Woody Dantzler. Full Story »

Learned from this article Tigers were fortunate to win Natty b/c

Aug 3, 2017, 11:36 PM

no team in last 27 years (since Miami in 1989) has won a Natty with a minus turn-over margin, and Clemson won The Natty in 2016 with a negative margin!

What fun to go against great odds & then still beat the best ever SEC D with 1 sec to go!

Haaaa! Love it!!

Adam with that low center of gravity and a head of steam going forward is going to be tough to tackle for anybody. It has always been known that even the NFL likes a RB to be 5'9" to 5'10" @ around 210-220 pounds with a thick strong body over all. Look for Adam Choice barring injure to be our best RB this season when it come to getting those hard to get yards. Adam Choice is the type of RB that can wear a D-line down. Adam Choice, my pick to be our break out RB for 2017....

A good start it seems. Hope big Dex's toe is healed. We need him. Not sure Dantler is the best mentor for the style spread offense the Tigers run. As I recall, he favored the run significantly. If it works for KB, OK.
Was a bit surprised on Feaster's extra wt, but if it's muscle and it doesn't slow him down wow. Much to do before 1st game, but I'm ready now!

Eagle I don't know if you were around when Woody played for Clemson, But Woodrow "Woody" Dantzler was one of the best option QBs in the country in his time at Clemson. I always said that he was a great RB that could pass the ball with accuracy when he needed to, and he could have been MUCH better if we would have had just close to the WR talent that we have now. I 100% believe that if we put Woody when he was at his best on this years team, he could win us another NC. Woody had a tremendous talent of making tacklers miss him, and he was strong enough to get away from them even when they wrapped him up. Woody Dantzler was an amazing FB player that played QB for us. With the player advantages Clemson has now with a top of the line training table and everything else that helps to make great players bigger, stronger, and faster. If woody would have had all of that in his day, he would've won the Heisman at Clemson. Woody was a "natural FB player"that always had a big smile on his face and excepting responsibility for everything he done on the field bc he done his best. I think that Woody will be a great mentor for KB.

Spot on, 52! Woody was incredible back in the day, and more often than not - he had to be a one man show. We have so much more talent now than Woody had back then.

And you're right, I couldn't think of a better mentor for him than Woody. It's great to see KB gaining confidence going into camp - that could be all he needs to take his game to another level.

I was around and watched games with pride. I agree with you memory. My point is that KB has had gifted receivers at his disposal when he played, albeit in reserve, but his tendency is to break and ron. He's gifted with speed and shiftiness, but not on checking down on receivers. I'm sure that's been a focus on his development. Just hope that's a part of his gained confidence. Imo, our best QB will be the one who gets all the players involved and let's the playmakers make plays, him included. Our QB doesn't need to feel he has win games. Just don't lose em. Hope this helps.

with KB's talent he will be part of the offense. think if you had woody on same field with our offense last year. If Kelly doesn't make the qb spot -think about the problems he creates running the jet sweep...We really have so many weapons it is ridiculous

Break and run? How do you know this

Dantzler was a lot of things

Aug 4, 2017, 12:59 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Thursday night practice news and notes: Bryant listening to Dantzler ]

but an "option quarterback" wasn't one of them.

He was his freshman year (in limited action in the Tommy West offense).

Even running the Bowden/Rich Rod offense, he was still a run-first QB. He was #1 or #2 rusher on the team his last three seasons. That's probably why Streeter remained the starter when he was healthy.

Woody was the first ever QB to rush for a 1000 and pass for 2000. Woody was a great QB

I was all for Woody Dantzler, I'm a diehard Tiger fan. But remember another QB of that era, Michel Vick of VA Tech. He was even better because of his arm with his running ability. Point is our QB must use his players, especially ultra talented WRs. If KB does that, he's got the starting role imo.

And he will get plenty of wins if he uses his arm with some accuracy, and his feet for keeping defenses honest!!!

I'm not saying Bryant can't win the job

Aug 4, 2017, 6:23 PM

But IMO...
it would come with the luxury of knowing the defense will probably hold 10 of our 12 opponets
under 20 points per game. And a Clemson offense that is probably 80% run- and I would project
a team that would avg 28-30 ppg. So can we win with Bryant, sure.
Long term answer?
We'll see...

Jusssstttttt an opinion.
