New Story: Saban gets a raise. Will Dabo Swinney follow suit?

Saban gets a raise. Will Dabo Swinney follow suit?

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney received a contract extension and raise last year, following the team’s first appearance in a National Championship game since 1981. Now that the Tigers have won a title, what will Swinney be worth?

TDP is gonna pay Dabo's raise? He's more of a Clemson man than I gave him credit for.

And apparently a good little saver too. Who knew he had the money to fund Dabo's raise out of his own pocket?!

This is an easy one. Ask Dabo what he wants, then give it to him. Pretty sure anything he wants would ultimately serve the interests of the players and university anyway. I say write him a check today and call it a tip for just being who he is. If someone started a gofundme for him I would donate today. Better to just overpay and make this a non issue.

Without knowing how he compares as a % of football revenue

May 5, 2017, 12:50 PM

making comparisons with other schools might not be the best measuring stick. You can be just as good of a CEO of a $100 million corporation as the CEO of the $billion corporation, but you won't be paid as much. But on the flip side, you have time to coach your kids travel baseball at 100 million vs a billion.

He certainly deserves to be among the highest paid in country, but I also think that we need to be able to continue to fund new things (like the operations center and assistants salaries) that directly correlate to Swinney's success and thus salary. I also don't get the impression that as long as Clemson is showing the kind of dedication and forward thinking to the program as Dabo is, Dabo isn't going to quibble over salary package that is as competitive with the others.

And honestly, I don't think you could pay me enough to coach at some of those places. Bama is win it all or be fired. TAMU thinks they should be win it all or be fired (which is worse). It would take 11.5 million for me to put up with some of that crap.

I have a hunch Dabo would not only secure himself and increase but also for Brent, Jeff, and Tony. Stability seems like a big deal to him. I think he'd share the wealth to help ensure his staff stays in place.

Clemson Football is ALL about the right man at the helm..

May 5, 2017, 1:36 PM

We are a solid football program, but still not in the Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, USC league where even a bad coach cannot kill the program.

We have seen what can happen with the wrong guy at the helm and now we know how long it could take even with the right guy at the helm...

Instead of asking how much is Dabo is worth, the real question is how much will it cost to lose Dabo?

We need to name a building after him while he is still coaching to make him feel guilty to leave and give him the proper boost in salary for a national champion winning coach. He should at least be making what Jimbo Fisher is making if not more because Dabo is the first ACC coach to win in the CF Playoffs and Jimbo won it in the last BCS game.

Our Athletic department does not bring in as much revenue as Texas, Alabama or NotreDame, or OhioSt or UMich!

Dabo makes a lot of money, we do not have to compete with what the big revenue schools are paying. I think Dabo realizes how much we love him, but we are not able to match coins with Texas and Alabama. We have one of the top 5 payrolls for football coaching staffs, maybe top 3 and I think we are in the top 10 for football administration. That is why Dabo has time to coach his kids during the summer. I think Dabo has 7 years left on his contract, I would wait to year 5 to negotiate a new one.

All the other ACC schools should pony up to boost his salary. Clemson and FSU drive the revenue for the conference.

I think you need to think about value here & how valuable is Dabo. But he should be getting paid more than Coach Fisher & Sumlin based on his track at Clemson in the last couple years. Also, though, Dabo needs to have a lot of input into it.

Let's see ...he is making $4.8 Million now...I say a 3% increase is in line. So his new salary moves to $ 4.944 Million. I would jump on tat if I were him.

Just kidding...he needs to make at least as much as Jimbo at FSU.

I look at this list of coaches/salaries and can see a way to rationalize everyone on it making the same or more than Dabo except for Kevin Sumlin. There is no reason for that dude to make as much as let one red cent more than Coach Swinney.

This x1000000000000000000!

Dabo is an awesome dude and I believe he is worth every penny but to start acting like he is living in poverty...no.

We are blessed to have him, but I wouldn't see the reason he would ask for more other than for assistant coaches salaries.

Dabo has got it fine! Honestly, I don't even think you could get Dabo to ask for more money for himself.

The fact Saban is taking in more than $10 million is mind boggling...What do you need to be paid $10 million for? Spare me the sales from jerseys, tickets, etc. These guys make more in a year than some people make in a life time. Anyone who is somewhat responsible could live the rest of their life off of half that money for a year's time.

I feel more sorry for the players taking a physical toll on their body's than for a coach that makes a few million a year coaching them.

This isn't to say that Dabo is not worth more, just that coaching salaries are already crazy high and he doesn't strike me as the person who is money hungry to be the top paid coach.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Dabo should have a clause in

May 5, 2017, 4:39 PM

his contract which automatically makes him the highest paid coach in the ACC. Jimbo gets 5.5 million, Dabo gets an automatic raise to 5.8.

Re: I think Dabo should have a clause in

May 6, 2017, 3:10 AM

He should be above Jim bo out of principle. Jim bo took over for a legendary coach. Dabo took over a program that was almost as bad as it had been in a very long time. He built Clemson up his own way. Jimbo only had to give a program a little boost. FSU wasn't broken. The job done by Dabo at Clemson is one of the most amazing coaching jobs seen in probably 30 years.

I'll say this, our FB program has gotten better every year since Dabo became the HC. Then think about how stuck in the mud our program was with Tommy Bowden after 9 plus years. We wasn't close to a NC under TB. Under Dabo, our program continuously move forward to a NC win. Now how much is Dabo worth. If he stays, we will win another NCG....

then end of the contract which would be extended to 2017 for an even ten years. All bonuses remain in effect and a $1 million signing bonus.

By the way, Where on the stadium grounds are the statues of Danny Ford and Dabo going to be placed. Danny is already a Hall-of-Fame coach and has won a national championship for us. Dabo has won a national championship for us and taken us to another title game. He will obviously be a college football Hall of Fame coach as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The higher the salary is

May 6, 2017, 8:45 AM

There should be a lower buy-out should the school need to fire him.

I don't see why everyone wants to jump on the pay him more and more and more bandwagon. We are not Bama, Michigan, OSU, etc financially. Things are great right now but there is no guarantee it will remain so and Clemson cannot afford to pay at the top of the scale for a program that isn't at the top of the football hierarchy. It is just a fact.

I prefer more pay for reaching specific goals/wins. This keeps a reasonable baseline for the university and still allows him to make cash at the highest levels.

If a coach, any coach, just wants to chase dollars, I don't think we should play that game. He makes an absurd amount of money and if he wants to be paid like Saban, he should probably go to Bama.

Re: New Story: Saban gets a raise. Will Dabo Swinney follow suit?

May 7, 2017, 11:57 AM

Based on what I have read from several Clemson journalists and other sources, Dabo choose to allow most of the salary increases to go to his well deserved assist coaches, a very unselfish sacrifice. BV will make $1.7 million this year, Tony and Jeff each received a $300,000 raise per year. All of Clemson's assistance's received a well deserved raise. In fact comparing Clemson's assistants salary increases compared to Bama's assistant coaches salary increases, Clemson's assistant's now earn approximately a million dollars more than Bama's assistant coaches. And let's not forget Clemson is a great place to work. Rarely have I seen Dabo embarrass his coaches or players during a game. Their maybe a few rare exceptions. For example Clemson's fake punt in the 2015 NC game or if a Tiger player has hurt the team with an unnecessary over aggressive play ( which are very rare ). Clemson's coaching staff is well disciplined as is the players who are also well coached.

Saban made sure he lined his pockets and so did that tree climbing, milk drinking nut case at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh. Saban will make over $11 million this year and Jim Harbaugh will make over $9 million this year. They don't understand " The Dabo Affect" and his approach to success. Which is fine by me, I hope they never figure it out. I guess we should include Urban Meyers's name in that short list of 3, after the 31 to 0 butt kicking we gave them on our way to a NC. And Will Muschump and the coot fans are still trying to figure out how we blew by their program at Maximum Warp Speed!

Based on Dabo's actions since becoming Clemson's HC he clearly has shown his commitment and dedication to Clemson, his commitment to his assistant coaches, the players and fans. IMO Alabama will need to look elsewhere for a HC when Saban leaves. Dabo has to much of himself invested in Clemson to leave even for more money.

Dabo has BIG dreams for Clemson football and Clemson athletics and I just can't see him leaving Clemson. His legacy has already been written. But I believe Dabo's love for Clemson runs so deep he will not contemplate leaving as long as Clemson University and Clemson Football continues to move forward and he is supported by the administration, the AD and most important, the FANS.

Saban is just a HC at a University someone else built. He just brought Bama back to prominence, which should not have been that hard because of Bama's past success. He might win another NC at Bama. However, IMO Saban would never have been able to accomplish what Dabo has accomplished at Clemson.

Dabo has put his heart and soul into Clemson. I think Saban would have been unwilling to make the sacrifices Dabo had to make in order to change the Culture at Clemson turning us into an Elite program. That's why I refer to Coach Sweeney as Dabo " The Visionary ".

I don't see to many of our coach's leaving either because I believe they want to be part of something special and to be a part of Clemson's future successes. It's exciting just to see what is going to happen next!

Other schools are trying their best to copy Clemson's model for success. Many coaches don't understand that it takes more than a model to build success. Everyone has to be " All In" and the coaches, especially the HC has to dream Big and believe those dreams can come true. The HC and his staff must have enthusiasm, vision and dreams and believe that they can accomplish great things.

Go Tiger's, I can't want for the next chapter. And Thank You to all those dedicated players and former coaches who helped to build Clemson's football program into ELITE Status!
