New Story: Looking back at Tech, ahead to Louisville

Looking back at Tech, ahead to Louisville

The craziest week in Clemson since last season’s home game against Notre Dame is about to begin, but before it gets started let's take a look back at the win over Georgia Tech and quick look ahead to Louisville. Photo Jason Getz / USATODAY

Holding my breath on this one. This is a dog fight every year. I just hope we can stay with them. Ville is scary good this year

Concur. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Sep 25, 2016, 8:27 AM

But just have not seen "it" in our offense so far this season.

I hope it's a case of sandbagging, but I don't see how that's possible.

Re: Concur. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Sep 25, 2016, 8:58 AM

No, and I would agree that our lack of offensive production hasn't been bc of sandbagging. I surely don't know what their problems are, but it's something. I really don't have a clue but, I have had thoughts that the offensive guys believed in the talk of how good they should be this year, and just didn't put in the work in the off season that was needed for them to be as good as the talk thought they would be. They really haven't blown anybody off the LOS this year. Whatever their problem is, hopefully they will have it fixed by Saturday.

If it is due to them not putting in the work in off-season..

Sep 25, 2016, 9:23 AM

Then it is too late to fix that now.

I am hoping it is not that and it is simply a lack of focus and intensity and all the substituting that is being done has not allowed them to get into a rhythm.

Either way, we will know after Sat night... ????

Go Tigers!

Re: If it is due to them not putting in the work in off-season..

Interesting point about substituting: We had a lot of substitutions in the Troy game because of the heat. I'm sure that affected the rhythm.

I am sure the guys on the OL worked hard this past summer. Looks like they need to gel as a unit. Maybe that'll happen this coming Saturday. Let's hope so.... The defense is going to have their hands full.

Re: Concur. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Sep 25, 2016, 10:15 AM [ in reply to Re: Concur. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. ]

A team can put in the work & still struggle so I don't believe this group did not put in the work. I would think they worked harder since each player knew they wouldn't get any playing time if they didn't give 110%. I have faith in their ability to get it all worked out & as a fan I hate putting down any players but I hope O line needs to improve and play with much more intensity. Defense has looked amazing. Excited for the big game...Go Tigers!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I question the O coaches more than the players...

Sep 25, 2016, 11:09 AM

For the lack of intensity and crispness. Not sure dual coordinators is helping this year. Something is not clicking.

And where is Artavis Scott in the play calling?

Re: Concur. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Sep 25, 2016, 10:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Concur. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. ]

I think the problem with offense is when the coaches try to slow the game down. In the first half we were clicking and moving at a steady speed, even with the terrible officiating. In the second half it looked to me like the coaches tried to slow it down to eat clock. This team works better when they are aggressive and in a faster rhythm

Clemson's DBs Will Have To Grow Up And Be Strong ----

Sep 25, 2016, 8:46 AM

They must shut down Louisville's receivers long enough so Lamar Jackson will realize that he has nothing and will have to force something. At the same time and often somebody on our defense is going to have to flat out get Jackson and bring him down quickly. Kind of like in the way Ryan Carter did Thomas against Ga. Tech. But Clemson must takeaway Jackson's options up front as well as down the field and have someone just go get him down.

Re: "...more orange...than Tech fans"

Sep 25, 2016, 9:34 AM

I was there and I watched it on replay. TV did not do the orange in the stadium justice. It was overwhelmingly orange in the upper decks and probably about 20% in the lower with a lot of fans (like me) sitting alone or in 2s amongst GA tech white. Tickets were easy to come by. Bought mine on row 2 at 5 pm on gameday.

5min before kickoff it was 50/50 orange

Exactly right, David......

Sep 25, 2016, 9:26 AM

The O-line will have to start opening some holes for the zone read, which hasn't happened so often this year.

On sandbagging: I don't think so. I may be wrong, but the blocking schemes seem to be different this year. I can't recall as much use of a pulling guard or motioned 3-back to provide the kick-out block or lead block at the point of attack. It's possible that we've done it more than I remember and it hasn't been successful - or we could be holding it back. Whatever the reason, the dancing that David talks about at the line by Gallman is because there's no hole for him. A lot of the kick-out blocks on the edge I have seen have been either whiffs or low effort. Perhaps other teams have started crashing deeper/sooner, which makes the kick-out block harder to engage, but if so, that's sometimes a matter of where the 3-back lines up and what angle he takes.

Whatever it is, it's affecting the inside AND outside run-blocking and needs to be fixed this week. If it's fixed, the game won't be close - Tigers win by a bunch. If not, look out.

Re: New Story: Looking back at Tech, ahead to Louisville

Sep 25, 2016, 9:48 AM

Allot has to do with drop passes and DW not hitting the open passes. There should have been a late TD against GT. So lack of execution.

The running game has not been good. We may need to use the Jumbo package a little more in short yardage. Pass protection has been solid. DW needs to run a little more when he scambles just to keep this on the defenses mind.

This conspiracy about holding back the playbook is laughable. Of course, there are some things that are being held, but the Tigers are running the offense. It needs to be run with more of a sense of urgency though. I think the O just came out flat in the 2nd against GT. As for Troy, the coaches took them lightly and were rotating early. This caused issues until they realized that this is a solid team.

Eliminate the drops and stay 35-40 percent run and there is a great chance of a W. 3 to 4 plays will tell the story.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just my take....

Sep 21, 2021, 11:39 AM

Clemson must, must make 1st downs- And convert on 3rd downs and keep drives going.
Next, its about making Louisville earn everything they get. We can't see them moving
the ball 80 yds in 2 or 3 plays- Clemson will never survive that way. If we get into
a scoring battle with them, that won't void well for Clemson. And playing "some" ball
control to keep their offense off the field will help- Funny saying that after everyone
thought OUR offense would be so prolecic. Best ever?
And Clemson's defense must keep Jackson's runs under control- He can't run wild. And
finally, I think the number is...
35; Keeping them under 35 points. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I am hoping Dabo
knows things we don't- Clemson wins, 38 to 35.
Folks, do this....
when the Tigers get ready to run down the HILL, look at Dabo's face- if he looks mad &
pissed off. We're going play well, and good things will happen for Clemson.

remember that.

Need a Mentality Change

Sep 25, 2016, 9:52 AM

After being at all 4 games this year, I really am not worried about Louisville IF our mentality changes for this week and I think it will. Our defense has been outstanding. The reason why is that they were again questioned from the beginning of the season. That made them nasty. And for Dex, Ben, Carlos and Christian to be nasty is a really really good thing. The offense has really not been seriously questioned internally. Or they have really not been questioned in a game that they were worried about winning. The offense knew that there was no way we were going to lose any of the first four games. But this week the season starts. And my prediction is that with all the questions that will be thrown out about our line, Gallman, and Watson, and the fact that Lamar is now the anointed "Heisman front runner", we will see that nastiness return to the O. Plus, it is gameday, we are in the Valley, and Corso will pick them. All good signs for us. Also, I think Jackson and his offense is really good, but they have not faced a defense like ours. Did you see the FSU game? USF basically did what they wanted against that D. I really do believe that we win this one and dominate. I think Mike and The Train both have monster games. And I am predicting 8 tackles for loss plus at least 4 sacks. Optimistic? Yes. But let's discuss next Sunday morning.

Thank you!!!!

FINALLY, positivity and belief in the team. We need to show this team & the coaches 100% support! The only reason everyone is talking about Clemson (good or bad) is because of all the great things they've already done. Let's stay positive, not constantly question our coaches, NEVER boo our players and be LOUD cheering these guys on to Victory in the Valley.
Go Tigers!!!

Great points. I agree 100% with watching Dabo's face. Louisville QB is a great player for sure. But Petrino has kept him in games way past the point of good sportsmanship to pad his stats and run up the score. Wouldn't expect any less of Bobby P though.

Best thing that happened was dropping from #2 to #5 in the polls.

I hope ESPN doesn't shut up about Lamar Jackson. I hope they don't stop talking about how Louisville is going to waltz into the playoffs. I hope they use they use the word "Clemsoning" as much as possible. I hope Corso puts a #### Angry Bird on his head.

And I hope that motivates us to give Lamar Jackson and Louisville a proper welcome to Death Valley at night.

Louisville gets a lot of credit for scoring 63 against FSU, but FSU's defense is overrated. Swag Kelly dropped 28 on them before halftime before Swagging it up in the second half. USF got 35 points last week.

Louisville's other wins were against powerhouses Charlotte, Syracuse, and Marshall.

Clemson will be the best defense Louisville has faced (and probably will face) this year.

Sep 25, 2016, 10:16 PM [ in reply to I don't see us outscoring Louisville. I hope I'm wrong, but ]

Again with these dang negative posts like come on! Some of you people need to realize what exactly is happening right now. We are 4-0 and have the best player in college football on OUR team. I don't care that Lamar Jackson has scored 235 touchdowns against 3 bad teams and an over rated hurt FSU team. Sure our offense has looked a little "off" at times, but this this is the second time I've said this tonight, don't you think our guys know this? I made this account to mainly read posts but I am not going to sit here and read negative talk without responding. Its a week before the biggest game of the year, and our team is 18-1 since last September, with the only loss to a team that has built a dynasty over the past 10 years. Let me guess, you were probably on here calling that loss too.

Just sit back and enjoy this amazing ride that we are all on, without trying to bring it down. We have one of the greatest talents to ever wear the PAW at the helm right now. Enjoy it, you don't have too much longer.

THANK YOU!!!! This is Tigernet, not Cootnet. I hope all Clemson fans stop the negativity right now and put the mindsets of these 18-22 year old boys in the hands of Dabo and his coaches at least until we lose a game. As Dabo has said many times, all you have to do is win by one. A win is a win and they are tough to come by. Gripe all you want after we lose but not before. And when we do lose (hopefully not for a long time) please remember where we are versus where we have been between Danny and Dabo. Would you rather be where we are with Dabo today with a loss or with a win under Hatfield, West, or Bowden? I will take a Dabo loss over one of their wins (even over TB's daddy) in a heartbeat because I know there would be multiple losses around the corner with any of those guys and there won't be many anywhere near Dabo.

Bobby P is a disgrace!

Sep 25, 2016, 11:03 AM

Coach Bobby P has not impressed me one bit. He is a joke! He is a diesease on this wonderful sport of football. Once he thought he had accomplished everything he could at Louisville Part 1, he ran to the NFL. How did that workout for you Bobby? Then Arkansas gives him a shot to turn its program around. And what does Bobby do? He embarrasses the university, his players, the fans, and most importantly his family. Then once he left with his tail between his legs WKU hires him. Now... Bobby uses this university for 1 season until Louisville came crawling back. Since Bobby began Louisville Part 2 he has lost to Clemson and Coach Dabo TWICE!!! On Saturday let's make it three times and send that "you know what" back to Louisville! Go Tigers!!! #ALL IN

Re: New Story: Looking back at Tech, ahead to Louisville

Sep 25, 2016, 11:35 AM

We were suppose to struggle on defense early due to so many holes to fill on the d line and we were suppose to be lights out on offense because we had so many returning players from last year. It has been the complete opposite with the defense being pretty much lights out with the offense looking lost most of the time. We need the offense to step up and play the entire 4 quarters not 2 quarters if we are going to beat louisville saturday night.

Re: New Story: Looking back at Tech, ahead to Louisville

Sep 25, 2016, 2:21 PM

All this talk about players not looking the same, something seems wrong? This talk is driving me nuts when it's been the coaches that are holding them back. That offense never does well at a slow pace. Tigers went out in the first half Thursday night and did what ever they wanted to do. Beside Cain dropping balls which has become a norm for him. 2nd half Dabo decided to shut down the offense and let the defense to finish the job. No different than the last 2 year's in the beginning. The problem with that is the defensive was beat up the 2ND half of last season when the offensive was released to full speed. Clemson will beat Louisville! The plan will be to get to the QB early. Our D line will succeed in this area. Once they arrive in his head, he will no longer be a factor. Mark it down.

Re: New Story: Looking back at Tech, ahead to Louisville

Sep 26, 2016, 7:42 AM

Clemson has been playing possum and have been playing extremely vanilla on defense and offense. Even with that this team is still winning. When Clemson faces the adversity it builds character, perseverance and heart. This is all by design to prep the boys for the seemingly tough stretch ahead. I believe that we are going to see a giant awake Saturday and we are going to show looks on both sides of the ball that Louisville won't be ready for.
