Elliott on quarterback battle: "It's going to be the best guy" that will start

Tony Elliott knows that the main topic of conversation during the summer will be the quarterback battle, and he’s glad he doesn’t have to make the decision on a starter. Full Story »

Bryant will start against Furman.

Tigers, we have a problem. Tony Elliott, our CO offensive coordinator says to the public that he came away from the spring game IMPRESSED with all 4 of our QB'S, it definitely gives me concern of what he saw that impressed him with all 4 QB's. What spring game was he watching that impressed him with all "4 QB's"!!!! :(

If KB starts, he’ll have a short leash like Stout had. Doubt he’ll get by with too many bad throws before they’ll yank him.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They trust KB and he starts but...

Apr 19, 2018, 8:16 AM

I think the Furman game mop up duty will be the final tryout. Maybe they start KB2 vs A&M and then unleash HJ or TL in the 2nd qtr. It would be hilarious to watch Jumbo panic on the sidelines. LOL

Re: New Story: Elliott on quarterback battle: "It's going to be the best guy" that will start

Apr 19, 2018, 8:22 AM

TE probably gave the 'appropriate' response to the media's questions - praise everyone, leave all options open.
I think it would be cool to have each quarterback play one quarter in the Furman game. Then, for Texas A&M, play the top two. Back to four QB's for Georgia Southern. That way, its hard to claim someone didn't get a fair chance and the coaches should certainly be able to settle on the 'right guy' for the rest of the season.

Just a thought.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like that idea but doubt the coaches would do it!***

That will just feed the tnet experts and create controversy. Maybe play all 4 against Furman and maybe even 2 against A&M as long as we either have the game in hand or need to make a change to get things going. No changes in a close game. Then no more than 2 against GA Southern. Need to figure out who the guy is and get him playing time especially if it is TL or HJ. They need the game experience before we get into the grind of conference games. Just another opinion. However it goes, Ill be there supporting whoever the coaches put on the field. ALL IN!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Amazing we are to the point some fans are this confident

To think we can go to Texas A&M and use it as a predetermined try out.

What I liked best in your unlikely scenario (which I like) is that our senior QB (who took us to the playoffs as a first year starter) and all 3 of our HIGHLY RATED QB's will get a fair opportunity to show their skills, although the QB in the fourth quarter of game 1&3 will not have a starting cast around him.
The nation and most importantly 4&5 star high school QB's will witness the opportunity to get a fair shake regardless of the strength at that position before he arrives.

Apr 19, 2018, 9:13 AM

Not the most talented player, but the "best" guy? Is this a popularity contest like class president?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no, it's not a popularity contest

Apr 19, 2018, 10:58 AM

it is about the best player... most people look at Michael Jordan and say that he is the most talented, but he wasn't the most talented necessarily. But the one thing that you won't do is out work MJ. MJ is very talented and most talented is very debatable, but very few can approach him in work ethic, which combined with his high level of talent, elevated him to legendary status. MJ wasn't the best jump shooter and never led the NBA in field goal nor free throw percentage. I would say that Wilt Chamberlain is more talented than MJ, but Wilt didn't have the same level of work ethic as MJ and that is not to say that Wilt lacked a work ethic because he had a very good work ethic...
so, sometimes the best guy isn't the most talented because sometimes the most talented isn't the best guy for the team, I would refer back to Mike Bellamy for a refresher on most talented...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're all over the place Knuck

Apr 19, 2018, 10:41 PM

Let me join you.

Wilt was the most dominant player in NBA history, but IMHO MJ was the GOAT based both on his work ethic and his drive to win whether it was practice or meaningless games. Not a trait you saw with Wilt or today with Lebron who is uber-talented and coordinated and the best DE who ever stepped on the court, but not as win-at-all-costs and hungry as MJ.

Bill Russell once said he could not nor could anyone cover Wilt for 4 qtrs. Other Celtics would guard Wilt in qtrs 1-3, then Russell would go head-to-head with Wilt in the 4th qtr with the game on the line and usually win. But Wilt averaging 50 pts per game for a season. 100 in one game. Get out of here. Will never be duplicated.

As far as the best guy for the team, it's TL or HJ, and it's the coaches responsibility to groom both of them for a long 2018/19 season. Both these young men with the right coaching and grooming can keep Clemson at the top of the rankings for the nest 2-3 years until TP is ready to take the reins. KB is a proven winner and will have to find another way to help the team after this QB transition is made early in the season.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

my points are very succinct

Apr 20, 2018, 1:26 PM

but this wasn't a point of goat or dominant, it was about talent and putting that talent to best use... so, you are actually all over the place.

as for TL or HJ, neither of us, unless you are on the coaching staff, are in a position to say definitely if either one or KB is what is best for the team... if that were the case, either of us would be coaching the team. there are many variables that go into "best for the team" that Dabo and staff should have a handle on, because they are paid to do that.

our place as alumni/fans is to support coaches who have proven that they will put the team in the best position to win. if they give KB every opportunity to keep the job, I'm good with that. If they give TL, HJ or CB every opportunity to win the job, i'm good with that because I expect that their professionalism will trump any favoritism (perceived or otherwise).

so if they believe that KB is best to lead the team to victory over Furman as the starter, i'm good with that. If they believe HJ, TL or CB is the best to lead the team to victory over a&m, i'm good with that... If KB is best to lead the team to victory over Ga Southern, i'm good with that, and so forth and so on because I trust the staff to have the best info to get the best outcome...

for what the coaches want to accomplish to get the best outcome, TL or HJ may be the more talented passers, but just might not be what is best for the team just yet... either will be eventually, and i'm good with that too...

Re: New Story: Elliott on quarterback battle: "It's going to be the best guy" that will start

Apr 19, 2018, 9:37 AM

KB is a good qb and good young man. Seems to me the staff is doing him a disservice. He's got the brains to understand the offense and the athleticism to play half dozen different positions. Does he have the arm talent to play qb on Sundays? Give him the summer and fall camp to learn wr, the slot or even running back. When he signs with the nfl next year he may be thankful.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

KB expects to be the QB and is not conceding the job

Apr 19, 2018, 10:42 AM

to anyone... he's fighting for the position that he has earned and he can't be blamed for that because this isn't about playing QB on Sundays but playing QB on Saturdays. He's played QB his whole life and until he is told that he can't play QB anyomre, he shouldn't take himself out of the mix. That's no different than Hunter Renfrow not accepting a scholly to Coastal, Ga Southern or Furman but choosing to walk-on at Clemson and give it his best shot.

KB is proving to be a better Clemson man than so many of these posters who say KB should just move to a different position and make way for a guy who has not taken the first snap in a college game or a guy that had the chance but did not beat him out previously.

I don't care if Joe Montana or Tom Brady walked onto the field, KB should not quit!! Nobody said that Hunter Johnson should transfer last year when he didn't beat out KB and he didn't quit. He went back to work to earn the job which is the same thing KB should do to keep the job...

Like I said, Bryant seems to be a heck of a young man and I'm proud to have him on our team. But for his sake I'd rather see him be a rich receiver than an unemployed quarterback. The coaches say they are all improving, and if KB is taking snaps this fall I will be cheering the loudest!

Re: KB expects to be the QB and is not conceding the job

Apr 19, 2018, 5:18 PM

i'm just dumbfounded that anyone would expect a Clemson Man, and KB is a fine example of a Clemson Man, to just concede a job he has already won because of another guys hype... that kind of quit carries over to opponents, and I bet no one wants the team to concede a game to bama or any other opponent... can you imagine Wayne Gallman conceding the tailback spot to Feaster? Gallman was not the most talented or hyped running back but he worked his tail off despite the hype of Feaster and kept his job. KB should keep working and fighting until the coaches rip the ball from his cold, dead hands too...

Do you think Patrick Sapp "conceded" to anything when he moved from qb to defense?!? Maybe you think he wasn't a "Clemson man". But I dare you to say that to his face.

Re: KB expects to be the QB and is not conceding the job

Apr 19, 2018, 9:28 PM

Ditto for Andy Headen in the early 80s. I was in school with him and watched him go from a skinny QB recruit to a starting LB for the N.Y. Giants during their glory years. He was too good of an athlete to keep off the field so they basically created a “bandit” position on defense for him and bulked him up to fill it. Fantastic move for both him and the ‘81 champion Tigers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

plenty of players make position changes for the better

Apr 20, 2018, 1:39 PM

Terrance Mack is another high school QB turned LB and did a great job. but those changes are unlike the chatter in this discussion that "KB should just go ahead and make the switch because it's TLs time now". No, KB should work on his craft and expect to be QB1 until the coaches name someone else QB1...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Headen was a mean guy

Apr 20, 2018, 1:35 PM [ in reply to Re: KB expects to be the QB and is not conceding the job ]

and have an honest discussion with Sapp about making the move, that's in keeping with what's best for the team. so much of what I keep reading here is that KB should just go ahead and make the change himself. you all have declared him to be 3rd or 4th string and he can help the team as a WR, RB or S but I haven't read anywhere that a coach has said such...
and unlike a lot of you keyboard ninjas, i'll say whatever I feel to whomever needs to here it. I won't put in writing what I won't stand behind in person, believe that...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 21, 2018, 10:44 AM

And TL and HJ are much more talented QBs than KB. I keep reading KB can switch positions. Not many are recognizing track athlete HJ has more speed than KB.

Apr 21, 2018, 10:36 AM [ in reply to KB expects to be the QB and is not conceding the job ]

Except TL and HJ are miles ahead of Montana and Brady at 18-19 yrs old. The question is will one or both of them be given a shot to play?

So in other words the decision is made because TL is clearly the best we have.
I don’t want to hear about the spring game being only one practice either.
We watched KB doing the same stuff throwing the ball all last season.
We have a good enough D to let TL take his lumps early and still win
They by playoff time he will be a force.
Don’t screw around and not give this kid the time to be ready to win us a NC.

Coach Elliott Pre-Bowl Interview 12/29/17:

Apr 19, 2018, 10:17 PM

Q. Was there ever doubt through spring practice and summer that Kelly Bryant would be your guy? Was that ever a question in your mind and Coach's [Dabo Swinney] mind?

COACH ELLIOTT: Never a question. I think right out of the gate when we started we had great chemistry, great cohesion. And you could tell that he'd been working in the off?season with the guys. The team was very, very confident in his ability. The biggest question and concern was we'd never seen him do it under the lights. When you talk about going on the road to Louisville, we're going to have to go to Virginia Tech, playing in those environments, he'd never been the guy out there first. That was our only concern. Physically and mentally, we knew he was prepared and ready. He had waited his turn. He really brought the guys together.

And we were excited about what we had offensively. Because there were a lot of questions with all the guys that walked away. But we saw that the guys rallied towards him. He's got a great demeanor about himself. The guys really feed off him.
