Despite mounting injuries, defense responds late against Florida St.

Brent Venables’ defense entered Saturday’s home game with three injured starters standing on the sidelines in street clothes, and two more starters went out with injuries during the game. Full Story »

And if we had a quarterback who wouldn't continually overthrow his receivers, or receivers who wouldn't drop ball, or running backs who didn't fumble on the one( or was it the two-yard line) not once but twice, we wouldn't need our defense to continually bail us out.
This game should have been over at halftime.
Miami and Auburn had their games in hand, and they were playing the #3 and # 1 teams in the country.
We were playing a 3-5 team without their starting quarterback, a lousy offensive line
and not much else.
And if it hadn't been for Brent, and his "D" we might be discussing which New Year's Day Bowl we would be playing in.

The goal line fumbles were FSU making a play, with the DE exploding off the line and making a hit during the exchange. Yeah, they got 5* talent.

Once is good defense, twice is bad play calling.

Nepotism scholarships (Trapp, Dawkins, Davis) hurting team.

Nov 12, 2017, 1:05 PM

Those guys didn't have any other D1 offers and don't provide adequate depth. It didn't matter when they were buried on the depth chart with a relatively healthy team, but now with all the injuries at DB & LB, it's hurting the team badly, and probably contributed to the Syracuse loss (not to mention the TD over Trapp's head vs NCSU). There are lots of D1-caliber 3-star athletes who had offers from lesser schools and would have loved to have had a scholarship offer from Clemson. They could have provided quality depth. Trapp, Dawkins, & the Davis boys should have been walk-ons. If they were able to beat out others and earn schollies (like Renfrow) great.

I'm sure people will respond that Dabo has Clemson at a top tier level and won a natty so nobody can question the universally reviled issue of nepotism, but that's irrelevant to whether or not it's bad to hurt the team depth with nepotism. One simple question that I'll bet nobody can answer:

How do nepotism scholarships help the team?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

do you even know football?

Nov 12, 2017, 1:22 PM

One: We're ranked in top 5 in country, so clearly our coaches know what they're doing.

Two: watch games where JD Davis plays. He's a killer out there and has had some great games this year.

Third: No guarantee those other guys you wanted on the team would be better than the names you listed.

offered Ryan Carter....'oh, we're only offering to get nkemdiche', etc...i'm not an expert by any stretch...by and large i trust our coaching staff in their talent identification and player development. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with those young men as well....and btw, #31 has turned into a pretty solid ball player and contributor to this team...

Not too long ago, Virginia Tech basketball refused to offer a "legacy scholarship" to the son of one of the best players in the history of the program. They only had so many scholarships, the kid was undersized, no other major conference program was offering him, and, besides, his dad could pay the tuition. The family took it as an insult and he went to a smaller school who offered him.

That kid was Stephen Curry.

Every program has surprise hits and blue chip misses. Vic Beasley was a 2*. Now he's a Pro Bowler. Mike Bellamy was a 5* bust.

Talent alone won't win ballgames. See Florida State and Tennessee. Given the record of success we've had, I am going to assume the coaching staff knows what they are doing.

Great post. But the subject of the original post was defense standing strong despite injuries. I agree with the article our D proved right many who asserted we have a deep and talented group of defenders. To me, how they got there is unimportant. The coaches developed them into a cohesive team, not individual talents.

3 starters? Muse, Dex, Joseph... isn’t Fields a starter for us?

Nov 12, 2017, 2:23 PM
