It to offer someone already there a scholarship?

At this point I think it would be better to save it for next year's class.

That's a bummer, it seemed like he was just about to hit his potential before the injury.

Wish him the best and it sounds like he's doing it for the right reasons. I do wish he would have made the move before NSD so we maybe could have added another player.

Bummer. Thought he'd be in the mix for a lot of playing time next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Leaving with a degree and a ring. Best wishes young man

Feb 8, 2017, 2:29 PM

Would've probably started opposite Tankersley had he not got injured.

dang with a degree too! Congrats to Adrian and Dabo

So am I missing something? Why is he transferring?

My best assessment

Feb 8, 2017, 2:41 PM

Probably a great opportunity to get closer to his daughter and get on the field somewhere. He really was right on the cusp, but honestly at this point he would have had a tough time getting on the field for us. Quite an accomplishment on his part to graduate. It leaves a lot of doors open for him.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: My best assessment

Feb 8, 2017, 3:08 PM

I thought he would have seen significant playing time next year. Guess the coaches told him otherwise.

Re: My best assessment

Feb 8, 2017, 3:42 PM

I doubt anything the coaches told him with regard to playing time was the issue. I think he probably wanted to be closer to home and looked at his experience here to this point along with the depth chart and made a solid decision. I guarantee he thinks he can line up and play with the best of them here, but the reality is there are players as good (and probably better) who are 2-3 years younger than him.

Feb 8, 2017, 2:46 PM

Good luck young man.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who gets his scholarship?

Feb 8, 2017, 2:49 PM

Once a Tiger always a Tiger. This is helpful to all the young talent we have looking for PT. Anyway, Baker will be missed. Hope he has a great year next year and makes it to the NFL. Anyway, where does his scholarship go? Punter?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That or maybe just give it out to somebody for 1 year.

Feb 8, 2017, 2:57 PM

We are going to need it for 2018 recruiting class if possible.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe his last ear of eligibility was 2017?

Feb 8, 2017, 3:21 PM

I don't think 2018 is a factor, unless I am mistaken.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, you are correct. I was thinking he was a RS JR

Feb 8, 2017, 5:14 PM

and not a RS SR.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bingo. Why would we use it to get a player that wasn't

Feb 8, 2017, 4:18 PM [ in reply to That or maybe just give it out to somebody for 1 year. ]

good enough to get a scholarship at a Div 1 school this year versus a 4 or 5 star recruit next year.? Not like we got an abundance of 2018 scholarships.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Who gets his scholarship?

Feb 8, 2017, 3:31 PM [ in reply to Who gets his scholarship? ]

Prior to baker transferring we were at 84 and Dabo said that the extra was for whoever won the punting job. I would assume that the extra scholly will go to a senior walk on for 2017.

Re: Who gets his scholarship?

Feb 8, 2017, 4:13 PM

What about Rencher? With the depth at RB, will that be a possibility? I know the coaches were high on him with his play on the scout team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with the board about his contributions but

Feb 8, 2017, 3:31 PM [ in reply to Who gets his scholarship? ]

this kind of info would have been better for Clemson before National Signing Day. I wonder why he held out this info until now. Because I can't imagine that he just made this decision.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe wewould have still saved it due to the small 2018...

Feb 8, 2017, 3:34 PM

class. If we gave a new one this year we would have had 1 less in 2018 of course. Maybe, we have some serious studs lined up in 2018.

Re: I agree with the board about his contributions but

Feb 8, 2017, 5:45 PM [ in reply to I agree with the board about his contributions but ]

I mean this in a nice way, but the only way I can state it where it's a vivid pic is the ol "Carrot dangling out in front of the animal cartoon". Yes, I believe he is transferring to be closer to his daughter. No, I don't think he would have transferred had he not just won the big one game.......... Not telling our team before NSD to me, and don't kill me. Selfish. ( Yes I know he may and probably didn't know then, but) It's only been one week. He had to have known before today that it wasn't gonna work out for him and he had better options to go elsewhere and play. I wish good luck to Baker but if he's "All In" when he's really not "All In", the least he could do was let Dabo know ahead of time for the betterment of the team. Hes gonna do what's best for him regardless... Would have been nice to use his Scholly for his replacement on NSD. Again, I'm All In and this is just my opinion. Nothing bad, just discussion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know that there was anyone we were salivating over

Feb 8, 2017, 9:29 PM

this past NSD that would have made a difference. That's more of another golden ticket for 2018, and we'll need it then more than now.

Best of luck to Prime Time! Hope he lights it up for a closer to home team, preferably USF and Charlie Strong - that'd be great to see. He could thrive there and would face a lot of good competition through a season to get looks at the next level, if he's healthy.

Go Tigers!

natty, but it will probably be given to a walk-on that is not like Renfrow and probably end up being used like that right on and on

Re: he was going to be a senior, we already had his scholly

Feb 9, 2017, 2:35 AM

But that would be after the 17' season is over or nah? If he left the team now (which he did) that would be the same as a junior leaving for the NFL early last year. Right? We wouldnt get his scholly until after the season if he stayed even though he was a senior. How did we already have his scholarship if it wouldnt be free until the end of the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we have a scholly for 17 that we can give to a walk-on

Feb 9, 2017, 3:37 AM

if we give it to them for only one year then it will be freed up for next year. Baker was one of 9 seniors already. So now we have 8 seniors and probably Baker's too since walk-ons generally only get a 1 year scholarship. If a walk-on gets the scholarship and earns another year, like Renfrow, then we will only have 8 next year instead of 9.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We already had one saved for the punter this one

Feb 8, 2017, 7:18 PM [ in reply to Who gets his scholarship? ]

will go to one of the other walk-ons

Good Luck in all your endeavors - wherever they take you and congrats on having a daughter.

If he only has one more year eligibility then it probably would have been hard for him to get playing time. Sounds like it was going to be a development situation for PT.

His scholarship will almost certainly go to a Senior Walk-On or another Walk-On with only a 1 year guarantee of scholarship. That way we keep our 2018 number the same.
