New Story: Clemson AD says Clemson vs. Georgia announcement could come this summer

Clemson AD says Clemson vs. Georgia announcement could come this summer

Clemson vs. Georgia. Just saying those words evokes memories of Herschel Walker, Vince Dooley, Danny Ford, and the heroics of David Treadwell. A national television audience saw Death Valley in all of its glory on a steamy night in 2013 when the Tigers and Dawgs renewed acquaintances, and now both schools are moving closer to putting a plan in place to play in the near future.

Now this I would jump and shout about! What memories

I have from the eighties over this match up. Hope it can become an extended series again.

I honestly don't care that much. Sure I would like to see them on our schedule but I can understand with Notre Dame on the schedule it is next to impossible to get a yearly thing going with UGA. As long as we aren't scheduling 3 cupcakes and USC (4th cupcake most years ;) )

Its not like we don't try to schedule good teams out of conference every year. In the past five years alone we have played a home and away against UGA, Auburn, and now Texas A&M. Better than the cream puffs that so many other schools were scheduling. If South Carolina was any good our out of conference schedule would be one of the best every year but since they are what they are we end up middle of the road.

Would love to see us go out of the Southeast for scheduling and get a series against Michigan/Ohio State/Wisconsin to help improve our recruiting up there as well. At this point I really don't think there are too many great high school players in the Southeast who don't know about Clemson but the more exposure we get in the midwest the better our recruiting does up there. I am not saying we need to forget about recruiting the Southeast but if we can snag a great player we normally wouldn't have gotten like a Christian Wilkins from out of the Southeast that is how you win National Championships on a regular basis. :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I highly doubt Michigan/Ohio State/Wisconsin is going to

May 3, 2018, 8:13 AM

give us a return home game with the Big 10 having so many conference games. Why would Clemson want to improve recruiting Big 10 area players? The Big 10 has been so successful in the recent playoffs.(yeah right). Extremely happy with what we are getting.

Re: I highly doubt Michigan/Ohio State/Wisconsin is going to

May 3, 2018, 9:32 AM

They still have good players in the midwest and playing up there and getting more exposure is not a bad thing. I am not saying our whole team should be from the midwest but grabbing a guy like Jackson Carmen out of there every year would be nice. Just like we grabbed Christian Wilkins out of the Northeast, partly because we play BC and Syracuse every year doesn't hurt us in the slightest.

I am not saying we should even play them every year but it was pretty cool seeing Penn St. play against Bama a few years ago so why not do that as well?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree 100%

May 3, 2018, 8:22 AM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Clemson AD says Clemson vs. Georgia announcement could come this summer ]

Can only play them at the beginning of the year because if you lose the game you have to go undefeated the rest of the year in order to make the top 4. Unless you are Ohio State or Alabama you can't lose any games at the end of the year. This problem would be solved if they expanded the playoffs to 8 teams. But that won't happen because the NCAA is so deep into the pockets of the bowl games they can't afford to take away their match-ups.

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

That's really not true. Sure Bama lost their last regular

May 3, 2018, 8:52 AM

season game and got in, but we also lost our 10th game of the season in 2016 and got in. Both times Ohio State made the playoff they lost in the beginning (2nd game) or middle (7th game) of the season and got in.

It really doesn't matter when you lose. If anything, it matters a little who you lose to, but even that's debatable at this point. We've seen teams with bad losses get in (including us last year), teams with good losses get left out (TCU 2014), teams that failed to win their division get in, and division/conference champions that beat teams that made the playoff get left out.

Swoffie and his dumb Notre Dame gift for nothing in return.

May 3, 2018, 7:58 AM

Fix it at least where the games aren't so spread out. (playing ND home and away in 2 CONSECUTIVE Seasons say every 6-8 years) so the rest of the nonconference scheduling is balanced. TBH, I couldn't care any less about playing ND. I had rather see P-5 matchups against SEC and Big 12 schools.

Here's the problem for UGA in 2021

May 3, 2018, 8:00 AM

https://www.sicemdawgs.com/2021-uga-football-schedule/

One opening for a non-conference, but they need it to be a HOME for them. They only have 6 Home Games for 2021.

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.

Re: Here's the problem for UGA in 2021

May 3, 2018, 9:08 AM

What's the problem? 2021 in Athens, 2024 in Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need a home game in 2021 also

May 3, 2018, 9:22 AM

That neutral site game might be what they are talking about.

Re: Here's the problem for UGA in 2021

May 3, 2018, 9:47 AM [ in reply to Here's the problem for UGA in 2021 ]

That's not a problem for Georgia at all. They play Georgia Tech away the same years they play Clemson away (see 2003 and 2013). They are willing to play another away game the years they get 4 home SEC games.

2021 in Clemson and 2024 in Athens is definitely doable if the powers that be want to make it happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe UGA is more inclined and has done 6 in the past

May 3, 2018, 2:07 PM [ in reply to Here's the problem for UGA in 2021 ]

because of the neutral site game with UF each year. Their situation is different than say a CU or USC that is always angling for 7 home games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a series that really should be played at least 4

May 3, 2018, 8:10 AM

games per decade. Clemson vs Georgia is what college football is all about. I did considered Georgia our main rival back in the 1980's.
It's a Giant sleeping rivalry that could and can be bigger and better than the Clemson-South Carolina game. I realize Georgia main rivals are Florida and Auburn...sorry Tech and SC. I think Georgia fans especially the older ones like to see these schools play a lot more often as well. This is a special game no matter how you slice it. :)

Stoked about this! I've only gotten to see 2 games in my short life of this illustrious rivalry (2013 and 2014) and always hoped to see more. Would also love to see us schedule some other big name teams, like LSU or Texas or Michigan

If we are ever going to be able to schedule home and home games with elite national programs now is the time to get it done. I would love to see teams like the real USC,Oregon,Okie St, Nebraska, Penn St, Florida, etc. come to the Valley.

Unfortunately I saw that game in person - it was hot as h&$! to be sitting through a blowout. If I remember correctly that was the first time Clemson hosted a regional ABC broadcast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

God they need to make this happen

May 3, 2018, 10:25 AM

The devil right now is gonna be in the details. Our last series, UGA only had 6 home games in 2013 (they played us & GT on the road, & the annual game w/ Florida). In 2014 when we went there, the schedule worked that both schools had 7 home games.

2 things hurt this. 1) the ACC schedule w/ ND is spread out & the home/away is uneven. 2) the home/away set-up with our in-state rivals is the same (on road odd number years, at home even number years). So even number years work out for both schools can go on the road & still have 7 home games (or 8 depending on who else they schedule). On odd number years, someone's going to have 6 home games.

I see it playing out a couple ways:
1) a couple of games in Atlanta on even years. UGA would be giving up a home date, but stay in-state for a "neutral site" game.
2) since UGA has shown they're willing to play only 6 home dates, they agree to play @ Clemson in 2021 or 2027, & Clemson travels in 2024.
3) an odd-even neutral site series. Even year in Atlanta to make up UGA's lost home game. Odd year in Charlotte to make up for Clemson losing a home date (Charlotte being a defacto home game for us since our school & fan base is closer to there than UGA's will be).
4) some home-away-neutral combo that's gonna require a little give & take on both sides. Ideally I'm thinking a game in Clemson, game in Athens, game in Atlanta, game in Charlotte (not necessarily in that order)

However they find a way to make it happen, it needs to happen. I know it won't go back to being an annual showdown, but I'd love to see this series played more than twice a decade.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd rather the games did not happen before they become neutral site.

May 3, 2018, 11:50 AM

A one off to fill an open date with a good opponent is fine, but not an annual game like Bama always plays.
The fans are the losers in these neutral stie games. How many of you are excited about the thought of going to College Station this year? I can't wait to see the Friday Night Yell and see what Tex AM is all about. Put that game in Dallas and I'm making food plans for what I'm serving during the game.

College football belongs on college campuses. There plenty of neutral site opportunities with the bowls.
