There was a time Clemson recruited NJ and Pa really well and got plenty of fine players. It would be nice to see us restore some ability to snag key guys from there just like we have begun to do in tidewater Va.

This prompted me to go back and look at the roster for my senior year, 1967, since it felt like we had a lot of guys from up north, and we did. Olszewski from Md, Liberatore from PA, kicker from NJ. In those days, linebackers went about 200 lb, and biggest guy on the team was Wayne Mass at 245. O line probably averaged 215.

Recruiting is the name of the game in all collegiate sports, especially football.
Baseball and basketball is FAR behind in this aspect. We NEED to make changes in something in those two sports, whether its coaching or recruiting methods cause the way its going now, we arent catching up any time soon with the talent level of the rest of the ACC, much less the country. The baseball team seems to have NO fire, no urgency, they play like they are taking a walk in the park. I still cheer for them to win every game but good lord, they arent playing well, no excuses.

Back in the 60's we would beat everyone in the conference. I remember one year we lost to Ga Tech (SEC)Alabama, Southern Cal & Auburn. We played these teams away for $$ like SC State does us now. I remember when we played Alabama & Southern Cal back to back in 1966. Harry O who was an all-american guard told me he faced 5 different defensive tackles against Alabama and only difference was their jersey #. The same tackle played all game against him from Southern Cal. There was an article in the Greenville News that only 4 players from Southern Cal would have been elegible to play for the ACC. That was back when athletes had to make higer on the college boards than regular students to play in ACC>

But at that time we had the biggest line in the ACC. Guys just weren't 300 pounds back then. Wayne Mass was also a starting tackle for the Bears. Don't forget Rich Luzzi, Mike Faccilo.

Interesting how much bigger lineman have gotten over the years. When I was in school (82-86), I recall only Perry and Devane weighing 300, but there were probably a few more. Today, they hit 300 in the 10th grade.

Populations especially in GA/VA/FL/NC have exploded in 20 or 30 years. So where PA and NJ were good places to find a few extra guys, it may not be as necessary now. There are more top notch players in the SE states, but also more competition. So I like getting back to pick-up of one or a few each season from the NE or the West. I doubt we will be able to exploit it a lot more than that.
