New fly rod time.. suggestions

Feb 20, 2022, 11:22 AM

I’m looking to get a new 5wt. All around rod for dry flies and nymphing. Open to all brands really; loomis, orvis, Scott, Winston, t&t, Douglas etc.

Any one out there got any good recs. Most of the time it’ll be used in western n Carolina.

Look up Moonshine Fly rods…..their drifter series is inexpensive ($200) and absolutely the best I’ve ever used..I own 3 fly rods by them and one spinning rod…check it out…welcome to use mine and try it out

Personally, I love Redington. Great brand for the price range.

If you really want to have fun then get into the world of two handed fly rods and swinging flies instead of dead drift presentations. Granted, the Tuckasegee is about the only Western NC River that I can think of that’s wide enough to do it.

I have two Moonshine Euro Nymphing rods. My first purchase was a Gen 1 and it was pretty good. The fit and finish was a little blah but it fished well - for the price anyway and I wanted to see if the Euro style "took" with me. It did and I was going to get a high end rod like a Sage ESN or the Thomas & Thomas Contact. In the meantime the 2nd Gen moonshine came out and I decided to give it a try before dropping $800 on one of the high end rods. I'm really impressed with that Gen 2 rod and would definitely purchase another - so much so I'm not even considering another high end rod. It's all the rod I need and I'm very happy with the sensitivity and the aesthetics. My 9ft-5wt general purpose rod is an Orvis Helios2. If something happened to it, I would look and see what Moonshine has in that category. I guess I'm pretty sold on what they offer. Just my humble opinion based on what I have been fishing the last couple of years.

By the way.... I live in Clemson about a mile from campus. If you are ever in town for a game and want to take the Moonshine out for a spin, drop me a t-mail.

Do you like a fast, medium or slow action rod? Makes a big difference in what rod you choose. Do you want a power or presentation rod?

I like a fast action rod that presents and I’m on a budget (trout bum). I watched the Yellowstone fly rod challenge reviews and videos. This is pro fly fishermen out west who test about every rod made and put them to the test in all sorts of challenges. That experts in that challenge consistently rank Fenwick Aetos as one of the top 5 wt rods in that challenge. I got my hands on one and tried it out. I promise you if you like a fast action rod with great presentation you will not get a better one, AND it retails for $199. I found mine new on eBay for $175. If you want the best 5 wt for the money go get a Fenwick Aetos. If you have lots of money get a Gary Loomis, BUT get an Aetos as a backup rod.

Keep in mind with the Douglas, G. Loomis and Orvis Helios 3 you are talking about $800-$1700! I would not trade the feel of my Aetos for a Helios 3. I’ve fished both. I’ve heard that Hardy Shadow is a fine rod at about $400. Would be a great mid priced rod to try. My buddy just bought one and loves it. My advice- be careful and go to the fly shops and see what works for before you buy. Taste in a fly rod is like taste in women. There’s no wrong answer. It’s what feels and works best for you. Good luck and tight lines.
