When did the name "coots" start?

Sep 7, 2014, 5:59 PM

Was it on Tigernet in the 90s?

My uncle Jimmy called them Coots when I was in high school

during the late 80's. But he was the only one that I heard it from back then. Mostly they were simply reffered to as Chickens.

"When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car."

"I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it."

Right about the same time...

Never heard it until signing on to TigerNet...and then

wondered who were these Coots of which everyone spoke.

We always called them the Chickens, Carolina or USC, the latter two of which are no-no's on TNet, the former being the name I still use.

To each his own, I suppose. lol

I call 'em Carolina too, Hartins.....I actually hate UNC more and don't deem them worthy of the name. I think it's an age thing too.....so I'll follow Tnet protocol and refer to them as the chickens here.

You're breaking your post protocol here.

it came around soon after tigernet was born and fgf was getting started.

I wish I could remember the name of the long time poster (who I don't think posts anymore), but he called them coots. He said it was not fair to a chicken because chicken is an enjoyable meat and coot meat is not very sought after. Duck hunters do not kill coots because the meat is so bad. This poster often referred to a coot eating its own dung from bottom of pond because they are known as bottom feeders. They eat things that ducks or geese will not touch. If one is cooked, it has a terrible scent that is hard to get rid of.

FGF thought is was funny to come back with a name for Clemson. They came up with tater, thinking it would make Clemson fans mad, but instead fans embraced it because it represented part of the agriculture heritage of the school.

And the rest is history

I think the university hired a consultant to help them market their mascot and team. The consultant informed the school that their mascot (C0CKS) referred to a male reproductive organ. They started that name "COOTS" themselves but the fans loved "C0CKS" and the rest is history!

LOL.....History rewritten with a bit of Clemson tint!***
