hey you old timers

Nov 28, 2017, 8:41 PM

back in the days of yore, would we be national champions already or would we have to win our bowl game and then the final rankings come out?

Win your bowl game!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

would it be 1 vs 2 then in the bowl or was there

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it made no sense. Bowl tie in. See my post below***

Not sure how SEC would have determined their champion

Nov 28, 2017, 9:08 PM

Could have been Alabama or Uga in Sugar since Auburn had two SEC losses. SEC Champ was in Sugar however. Cotton bowl may have had a tie in with old SWAC conference winner, so it might not have worked exactly how I said. But fairly sure we would have played Oklahoma in orange for same reason we played Nebraska in orange in 81

Sugar.

No matter how bad we beat OU, there’d be some dufus redneck rag of a magazine somewhere that would say Bama is #1. That’s how they would get mythical national championship #17.

CFP is infinitely better if your team isn’t Bama.

Bowl game and then depended on ranking and what coaches and sports writers thought.

Re: hey you old timers

Nov 28, 2017, 8:47 PM

The rankings came out after all the bowl games were over. The 1981 rankings came out the next day after our win over Nebraska. After our win and a loss by other contenders, it was a foregone conclusion we would be Number One.

I remember right after the game a reporter asked Coach Ford how it felt to be National Champs and he said something like "well, I'll wait until the rankings come out tomorrow, but". It's much better the current way where it is determined on the field.

Nov 28, 2017, 8:59 PM [ in reply to Re: hey you old timers ]

I might add, at the end of the regular season the rankings were

Clemson 1
dowgs 2
bamer 3
corn shuckers 4

before our bowl game was played, dowgs and bamer had already lost their bowl games. pretty much winner of our bowl game would be champs. Still, the polls didn't come out until the next day. Personally I prefer the cfp.

In the old days our undefeated or one loss teams were discounted in the voting. Just think UCF.

Re: hey you old timers

Nov 28, 2017, 8:56 PM

Depends, some schools forbid their teams to play in the post season.
This is why we were ripped off in 1948.
We went the entire season undefeated (11-0 including post season) and won our bowl game.
Meanwhile Mich played 2 fewer games, had a non post season clause and won the 1949 championship.

It wasn't until many years later that non post season restriction was axed.

Are you kidding, the pollsters back then are just like the ones today. Nothing has changed. The same people voted for their teams and the final polls reflected that. ND was in the mix just like today if they even have a pulse. Clemson didn’t stand a chance. Kinda second tier.

Re: hey you old timers

Nov 28, 2017, 9:04 PM

Yep, we were the USF of the era.
It wasn't right, but if you weren't ND, OK, the Real USC, Ark or MO then you were chopped liver.

Have to win bowl game

Nov 28, 2017, 8:59 PM

We would probably play Oklahoma in Orange Bowl. ( Big 8 had orange tie in) Wisconsin vs So Cal in Rose. (Big10 vs Pac10) UGA vs Miami Sugar (sec tie in, UGA only 1 sec loss) auburn vs Ohio st in Fiesta, Alabama vs Penn st in Cotton.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

crazy to think of those times

Nov 28, 2017, 9:06 PM

and then BCS and now

was it 2015 season that we wouldn't have been in the MNC if BCS were still around?

Auburn only has 1 SEC loss as well and beat UGA head to head

Re: hey you old timers

Nov 28, 2017, 9:04 PM

There were a lot of tie ins and ACC did not have good ones. Orange was big 12 (Nebraska often) and Sugar was SEC. Cotton was SWC I think. Ross had both PAC10 and Big 10. That is way we have not played in it. We had to br highly ranked and get one of the at large. The match ups tartlet put 1 and 2 together. Nebraska was 4 when we won. Penn Sate lost but if they won we might have not been No 1. It helped we were a good story. Things like Perry’s personality helped. At over 300 he was an anomaly. He got up to nearly 340 but was quick as a cat. Used to play with him at Fike and he was an amazing Bball player. Could dunk but it was ugly.

Seldom Number 1 played number 2. Bowls had tie in to conferences. Number 1 might play number 5. Number 2 might play a team out the top 10. It was strange. All major bowls played New years day. Rose, Sugar and Orange, they played in that order. After the games were over voters did they thing guessing who was Number 1.

Number 1 we were Orange Bowl bound to meet the Number 4 Cornhuskers.

And virtually no one, and I mean no one, including many Clemson folks, thought we could ever beat the likes of Nebraska.

Kind of like when few thought we could beat the mighty Sooners...nor the Buckeyes...nor Bama. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

As I recall, in the 60s the champs were decided BEFORE the bowl games. Seems that the elephants got killed in some bowls but were still national champions. The Bear would just say that he just let his boys have a good time at the bowls.
