National Anthem-Coots Basketball
Apr 1, 2022, 9:44 PM
|

I just saw an article about the USC women’s basketball team staying in the locker room during the National Anthem tonight. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that a school that is representing our state is embarrassing our state? I guess this has been a thing for several years…..I had no clue but it makes my blood boil!
I don't follow ladies basketball, I rather watch reruns of Brokeback Mountain, but is any Clemson team protesting during the anthem?

I just brought it to the attention of radio personality in Charleston and haven’t heard anything. My Gamecock friends didn’t know. She is protesting racial injustice.

Apparently, UofSC does not play the national anthem before their home BB games. 'The anthem isn't played at the Gamecocks' home games, but "if opposing teams choose to play the anthem during the time we're in the locker room, then we choose to stay in the locker room," Staley further explained.'

Most everything that "school" in Columbia does is an embarrassment to the Great State of South Carolina.

I have it on good authority that Dawn has been instructed by the powers that be at uofsc, that players will not take a knee anymore when representing the school. Staley was told if they could not comply, then stay in the locker room.

Supposedly they’ve been doing it for years. And you had no clue.
But now you clutch pearls and deem it embarrassing? Who gives two flips what their women’s basketball team does?
Take some heart medication and find a real problem to stress about.

You are correct. Neither our men nor women are out on the court during the anthem. It's been this way as long as I can remember. It has absolutely nothing to do with politics or anything of that sort.

“It has nothing to do with politics or anything of that sort.”
If Dawn Staley says it does, why do you get to decide it doesn’t? I realize you’re entitled to an uninformed opinion if you want it. I’m just pointing out why your opinion is held in such low regard.

The “tradition” is meaningless, anyway.
Apr 1, 2022, 11:29 PM
|
|
It’s nothing but a ritual of conformity. The playing of the anthem before a sporting event has never made someone more patriotic. In fact, the only real affect it has on people seems to be those who get mad if someone kneels, doesn’t take off their hat, etc. Again, simply an attempt to enforce conformity. And over what? A song?
Are you launching an effort to demand the playing of the anthem at other public gatherings? Movies? Concerts? Neighborhood Easter egg hunts? Probably not, because it’s just something you’ve been trained to go along with.
But maybe the real issue is this: Why in the world do some people think they’re in a position to demand that someone else behave a certain specific way and carry out a ritual when a song about a country ostensibly devoted to freedom is being played?

I think those that protest during the National Anthem and the Presentation of Colors have a very different understanding of what that ceremony means, as opposed to what I think it means. I think the flag is simply a visual representation of ALL of the highest ideals that this country holds. We have ALWAYS failed to meet those ideals, but they are still the goal nonetheless and they are worth saluting. The flag DOES NOT represent all the bad things that happen to Americans every day. The flag has NEVER represented THAT. I think also, it changes your opinion and feeling permanently, to stand in a foreign country, as a representative of this country, realizing that you are surrounded by hundreds of miles that is not this country and it’s you and your brothers and sisters against all of that. Once you have been THERE, disrespecting the flag simply becomes unthinkable.

Sometimes it's simply where you're located and with whom you associate. For example, many years ago I was in a theatre in Fayetteville, NC (Home of Ft. Bragg). I think that it was one of the Rocky movies that started with the playing of the national anthem. EVERYONE in the theatre immediately stood. A few months later I went to the same movie in another town (Charleston, SC)...When I stood up everyone in the theatre around me started laughing.

They've don't come out during the anthem. This is not new and it is not in protest of anything. The football teams aren't on the field for the anthem. I don't see you soiling your diaper over that.

What bothers me the most is to see my fellow South Carolinas complicit in this. South Carolinians are buying tickets and supporting this team. Games are sold out. I was at a bbq joint for lunch yesterday and people were talking about the game. It’s the talk of the town in the Midlands.
I saw a photo of the Louisville team out on the court alone, while a team from home state is disrespecting the county.
Many young kids look up to this team, and to see the example this team is setting is horrible. Their coach makes over $1M a year, some of which comes from our taxes. This is a disgrace! I would expect this in Berkley, Seattle or Portland, but not in SC!
I hope this SC team becomes roommates with Brittney Griner, after they lose to UCONN of course!

I guess I am telling my age but when I grew up we were expected to at least stand for the anthem. I remember going to high school football games where even little kids who were playing were made to stand still while the national anthem was played. No player stayed in the locker room. Regardless of hoe you felt about the country or the President and his policies or, in my case, the war in Vietnam, you still were taught to stand there quietly with you hand over your heart.
When I saw the article about the team staying in the locker room it hit a nerve for me. Now I don't wave the flag in the faces of everyone I see. But I am fiercely patriotic simply because I believe that this is the best country in the world to live in. Yes, we have our share of issues and problems. But we are FREE. Free to protest about what we disagree with. Free to vote and change our country's leadership. And yes, free to take a knee or stay in your locker room when the anthem is played.
But just because you can doesn't make it right. I personally stopped watching the NFL because they allow players to take a knee during the anthem. How hard is it to simply stand there quietly? Honestly, sometimes I feel like I am watching a bunch of petulant children who are pouting because they don't get their way.
I believe a portion of our society has become solely focused on finding a problem under every rock. But in their quest they miss the concept of thankfulness.
Off my soapbox now.

If the over/under was 25,000 in attendance, I would take the over.
