My thoughts on Deshawn.

Mar 18, 2021, 6:50 PM

I put them in a separate thread becasue I am sure I will be misunderstood and blasted for my comments.

Let me say this first: I know nothing about Watson that would lead me to believe the allegations are true. I have no idea what actually happened and whether the allegations against him are 100% true, 100% false or somewhere in between.

I want to make a general comment about the moral situation we are in America.

Several years ago, when Jamies Winston was going through his rape accusation at FSU, Nole fans were quick to take his side. Nole opponent fans were quick to judge him guilty of rape.

My position was:

1. Jamies admitted he went to a bar and picked up a girl, brought her to his apartment and had sex with her.

2. She admitted she met him at the bar, went home with him and had sex.

2. He claimed it was consensual. She claimed it was rape.

3. All we know for sure is that Jamies admitted he is a man who has no respect for women and thinks they are to be used for his personal sexual pleasure. And, we know that she is a woman who will meet a guy at a bar, have some drinks and go to his apartment with him in the middle of the night.

I had a peer who was a math teacher. At the time she had one son who was a college basketball player (starter at VT) and two sons who were seniors in high school and would go on to play mid-level college ball.

(As far as Jamies is concerned we quickly learned that he was a kid of low character and no integrity and should never be considered any kind of role model for anyone to want to model his life after. He was a kid with great athletic talent, but no moral character. We still don't know if the sex was rape or consentual.)

I told her that if I coached a men's college team, any sport, I would tell my players: You may not like what I'm gonna say. But, it is the world we live in today. If you have sex with any woman who is not your wife, even if you know her well, but especially if you don't, assume she is going to accuse you of rape. That is the situation in which you live. That is reality. She may not, but she may. So, assume she will. At the time she was shocked I would take that position. A couple of weeks later she came to me and said, "I talked it over with my husband and we agreed you are correct. That is the world in which my boys live. We have had that discussion with them."

Adult men are in the same situation today. Especially those who are rich and famous. If you are alone in a motel room with a woman who is not your wife, no matter the reason, assume she will accuse you of sexual harassment up to and including attempted rape.

It may not be fair. It may not be right. But, it is reality. People laugh at Mike Pence, who refuses to ride an elevator alone with a woman, much less be alone in a private room with her. But, he will never be charged with sexual harassment or attempted rape as long as he adheres to his policy.

I don't know if Watson is guilty of any crime or even guilty of trying to seduce the woman and stopping when she said no. I don't know if he had any impure thoughts in his heart at all.

But, he is guilty of using extremely poor judgment to put himself and his family in position to be accused of criminal activity with the woman.

I agree completely in that even if he engaged in mutual acts, he should’ve used better judgement and had more self awareness. He is an easy target and is getting taken advantage of.

There's absolutely no comparison in the two men whatsoever, and trying to compare them in the same sentence, is like comparing a Toyota corolla to a Bentley!!!!

That's why I was hesitant to post it. I wasn't trying to compare the two men in terms of character or personal traits.

I was comparing their decision making. Both showed very poor judgment, at best.

I think you were fare in your assessment and I didn't take it as Jameis and DW4 were being sold as similar people. Some of these people get their panties in a bunch over dumb things.

I wouldn't put it that every situation is a rape situation when alone with another person but you are right that whatever goes on between two people behind closed doors can have consequences.

Some of the opinions on the board today have really made me shake my head with what people wanna believe as "consent" or "well, they should have known" like it's some sort of permission slip to do anything you want (good grief).

Hopefully as more of this comes to light we get the truth and I hope it means clearong DW4 as he's been one of my fav players to follow...

However, regardless if it's a former Clemson player, famous celebrity, etc, we need to stop with some of this thinking that consent is okay to force because "they should have known" as that is a truly sick thought and disrespectful to any legit sexual assault victims that had a notable figures use there power to coerce people into sexual favors.

The truth will come out eventually. I hope these charges are baseless, but too much money has made many a man think he is bullet proof. My guess is the truth is somewhere between completely innocent and completely guilty.

Mind if I C&P a piece of this in a FB post?

Mar 18, 2021, 8:25 PM

Not really wanting to post the parts that are specific to Jameis or DW, but would like to share the general advice part along with the Pence piece.

Yep. That's why I was hesitant to post it. I was not trying compare the two men, just compare their situation due to the decisions each made.

He wasn’t drawing a comparison between their character

but simply making the point that both used poor judgment to end up in a her word versus his situation.

Not to mention the misspelling of his name, although your consistency with it makes me believe it might be intentional, not just ignorant.

There have been no allegations at all of criminal activity. This is a civil suit.

It's a civil suit based on allegations of criminal activity.
I think what you meant is that there have been no criminal charges.

Re: My thoughts on Deshawn.

Mar 19, 2021, 9:27 AM

And if there's criminal activity, why is that not the news? Usually civil follows criminal, not the reverse. Prove it in a court of law, then sue.

The first question someone should ask is what type of massage was DW4 getting and how little did he have covering his body. There are all kind of massages, so were these an established masseuse with a chiropractor or was this just a "Massage" parlor. If these are nine different masseuses, all that these "ladies" have to explain is there training and qualifications to do actual massages. Times and dates and amounts charged should be submitted in writing.

I don't think he is comparing Winston and Watson at all. I think the advice is sound. It is a shame that the world has come to this, but so many people are out for a buck and they don't mind ruining a person's reputation to get it.

Mar 19, 2021, 8:27 AM

I totally agree with you. Employers do not allow supervisors to meet in discipline situations with an employee of a different sex, churches have to do background checks on Sunday school teachers, celebrities and politicians are subject to whistle blowing in every situation. This case has absolutely nothing to do with the Deshaun we all watched and loved here at Clemson and it has everything to do with a very wealthy star who should not have been in the position he was in. People in any high profile position have to have the sense to stay away from compromising situations, period.

Bret, I am picking up what you are putting down and at least agree in philosophy. Before I retired i was starting to see a little of this starting and would warn my young Marines to be extremely cautious, as I personally knew of at least 3 cases where consensual Sex between a Male and Female Marine turned into rape charges later. Eventually charges were dropped, but not before a long, stressful, frankly career killing period had elapsed for these Marines. To Jameis... we all know he is a knucklehead, but did he do what was claimed, or what he said? None will ever know the full truth. As for DW4, maybe I'm being overly cautious, but until some proof is established that he has even been in the same room as these women, he is given full benefit of the doubt, at least until something tangible comes to light. Does that mean its impossible that it happened? Absolutely not. Even if he DID in fact get an adult massage or have sexual activity with these women, if it was consensual, I'm not one to be his judge. I could be wrong, but I bet a whole lot more folks crying out in righteousness and indignation are less than pure themselves. If this Attorney didnt have a somewhat shifty history than i would maybe take this more seriously; as it is he seems like Avenetti 2.0

I’ll wait til all the facts and evidence comes out before I make a judgement on anyone involved in this. I don’t know if Deshaun is guilty, I also don’t know if he’s innocent, and anyone here saying otherwise is being dishonest. I hope for everyone involved these allegations simply aren’t true.

I do agree with your point on his decision making. I don’t go to Pence degrees as I’m not rich or famous, but I certainly don’t put myself in any situation with a woman where it becomes her word vs mine. That’s sad that’s the world we live in.

I also can’t help but look at the claims, and if they have even a sliver of truth to them, have to ask why Deshaun would put himself in this situation. Why would he be flying in massage therapists? He’s on a professional football team. I’m sure he has more highly trained professionals employed by the team.

Great points Bret . . . . and the folks that are saying you

Mar 19, 2021, 9:15 AM

are comparing the 2 guys are not very smart - no part of your post makes it seem like you are doing that.

My quick thoughts -

1. Dude is 24 years old or something . . . sex is a part of that age group - I was gonna say a big part of that age group but I didn't so the angry mob would be less - it sucks he has to be so careful with every encounter he has . . . . but it is ONE of the drawbacks of being ultra-rich and famous. He has to have known that. If he doesn't, he sure does now.

2. I have done NO looking online about what is going on - just a quick read here & there only on TNet.

IF he is flying masseuses to Houston . . .

IF they are getting on a plane and coming to him . . .

And IF they did it more than once - they knew what was going on . . .

It is a bad look for everyone involved. It's prostitution.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.
