My swing at some Basketball transfer facts...

May 14, 2021, 5:36 PM

I found some interesting facts and educated myself at the same time. While as JK says our transfer numbers are not super alarming unfortunately I have to agree based on some numbers solely. That said, I still think they are higher than what you should see in a solid program with good foundation and a players coach. Clemson's transfer numbers are above national average plus losing recruits and walk-ons that doesn't help the picture.

National NCAA Basketball transfer rate currently is 15% of all men's players NCAA D1. There have been 1573 transfers i the 2021 portal as of a few days ago. Portal numbers will immediately level out or lower nationally for 2 reasons. Transfer for immediate place is allowed once, all these transfers are going to be vested or have to sit out a year. Also, there are more 4th, 5th, 6th year D1 players than ever before strictly due to extended eligibility due to bonus Covid yr. Those players will be gone after next season and they make a large percentage of the transfers currently.

The ACC has 15 teams and 51 players have entered the portal but if you remove the 5th/6th year players due to Covid, that number drops to 41.

Transfer numbers by team based on players not expected to leave program at end of season.

FSU, ND: 0 (FSU lost 5 but 4 to draft) (ND lost a 6th yr player, expected)

GT: 1

NCST, VT: 2

UL, VA: 3

#'s with * means eligible 5th/6thyr graduates left team on top of the # of unexpected transfers (Trapp scenario where JK says you don't expect their return), some will just end career

Clem, Duke, UNC, Miami: 3* ; everyone of these teams lost 1 or more Grad Sr players not expected to return, ie. Trapp type player

BC, Pitt: 4* both lost 5th/6th yr grad plus the 4
transfers

Syr: 5 transfers

WF: 6* transfers plus 1 graduate

Sidenote: UGA Dawgs have had 9 transfers and only have 3 schollie players.

So while our transfer numbers may not be alarming to some, at our current rate I don't see CBB building a successful upperclassmen team which tended to be our most successful teams.

I agree.
When you lose 67% of your highest signed class within 1 year, then add Trapp, and then a decommit.
When you sign 4/5 stars year after year, I can see some transfers.
For Clemson to be competitive with higher talent teams, we need to build a team, develop, mature, and play as a unit.
This is hard to do with one year rentals and always trying to fill important gaps or starters. The losses we have had are starters or high minute players (planned, Mostly).
My question is why a player who is either a current starter or one that will become one - would leave to go to another program where they don’t have chemistry and have no idea what they are really getting into?

Was Clemson represented wrong?
School too hard?
Coach not the same as they thought?
Coach said they would play and be developed and then neither happen?
Coach said he would finally develop an inside game and again did not?
Player not up to the task?

I get tired of seeing posts about the reason a player left is because he was soft.
I also get tired of excuse makers explaining that because other schools having transfers that our numbers are ok.
There is a reason for every transfer, those reasons need to be addressed. Simply saying we are as bad as others does not work for me.

I agree with everything you just said. Take it a step further to add more as to how some of these transfers are somewhat baffling, not only starters or high minute guys, they leave Clemson to go to Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro and Marquette (which is a basketball school at least), but why leave for small schools outside the ACC.

I see where Trapp has transferred again to Cincinnati since the Greensboro coach moved to Cinci HC.

your blame the coach does not work for me so how will we resolve this stalemate? BTW the answer is most likely somewhere in the middle.

Nice work and I can’t help but think the last time Georgia was so bad at basketball they won were dead last in the conference but won the SEC tourney. It just means more.

Thanks. I was shocked at UGA numbers. There is definitely some unraveling going on over there in regards to their BBall team and coach. I didn't see as much negativity as I expected surrounding the coach specifically, but I did not dig into forums, just reading articles in regards to BBall transfer portal. But I saw articles badmouthing players. I thought UGA had a decent team last year and didn't they have the #1 recruit committed at some point? Anyway, 9 transfers with top 8 scorers leaving is definitely an issue in house somewhere.
