My only comment on the transfer portal is based on the

numbers.

On average, there are 1,093,234 high school football players in the U.S. each year. On average, there are 6.5% of those players (71,060 players) that will play NCAA Football. The drop of college players drafted to the NFL is 1.6%. On average, roughly 853 players are drafted by the NFL from the college players each year.

Currently, the transfer portal lists well over 2000 players. A second grader can understand that at best, only 853 players out of 2000 portal players would be able to cover 42% of the current 2000 available players.

That leaves an excess of over 50% of the 2000 players in the portal that are not being paid by an NFL team after leaving college.

That is a bunch of numbers but no way are there more than 853 players drafted. There are just over 200 players drafted each year but of course many that are drafted never make a team. There are also many more players that sign Free Agent contracts and some make it and some don't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How do you get 853 college players drafted by the NFL each year?

Dec 19, 2021, 4:46 PM

Given 32 NFL teams, that would be about 26.5 rounds in the NFL draft…

I get 259 picks in the NFL draft (7 rounds).

The 853 players came from the Portal website, as an average.

Judge is right. If someone is claiming 800+ players a year,

Dec 21, 2021, 11:03 AM

they are seriously "Gilding the lily". Even with the amount of Undrafted Free Agents that get invited to camps, I don't think you approach that number.

The number does show up in articles about it, but they do not explain where they got that number. Because in the SAME article, it says there are only 254 draft slots available each year. (It is slightly more with compensatory free agent picks, etc).

NFL teams will start training camps with over 90 players. They will eventually all have to end up with 53 on their active roster. Now, of those 90, not NEARLY all the "excess" are players just out of college. You have practice squad players, former players from other teams, and players who may have been out of college for a couple years, still trying to catch on with a team.

When you add all that up, trying to make an NFL team straight out of college is a daunting task, even for the "Power 5" stars. A goodly portion of NFL rosters are made up of names that never sniffed the Power 5, for whatever reason.

Jerry Rice-Mississippi Valley State
Walter Payton-Jackson State
Brett Favre-Southern Mississippi

That is the caliber of player that CAN come out of the smaller, unknown schools. It makes the odds of making it from college to the NFL that much more daunting.

read the comment last week. Thanks for your comment.

I watched a You Tube video this morning where coaches are already not happy with the portal. The complaint is that players are already making coaches act as babysitters to players who don't feel they are getting enough from the University they are now partnered.

I feel certain that the portal will be redefined within the next 2-3 years. It is a complete cluster right now. Bo Nix has already angered the Oregon staff he is soon to work with.

That sounds like someone who ends up in the express line with 40 items when the line says 12 items or less. Math wasn’t there strong suit either.

34 in the past 3 years. They practically had it finished and then started tearing it completely down for some reason. Now they are almost back to the stage where the rails appear to be the main thing left to complete. I wonder if they got it right this time. And wonder hoe much money they lost on the re-do. But not the billions lost on the nuclear plant they quit on just a few miles away from there.

Wait a second...gotta bang my calculator. Nope, it still says over 99% of players who enter the transfer portal will not play in the NFL. I must have entered something wrong in my calculator or something because 1,980 out of 2,000 players in the portal couldn't all be making the same mistake.

Great Post civil engr. I can verify all the numbers but the very few kids make the NFL. If many if those players for example the RB from Spartanburg who transferred to SC could have really benefited had he and other players had stayed at their original school they would have the support of the coaches and players for networking. Dabo would help those player’s get NFL or coaching opportunities. Through networking with Clemson player’s have gotten opportunities that they may not have gotten without those contacts. If a player does transfer don’t burn previously crossed bridge’s.

TE and Brandon Streeter spoke at an event I went to. He said most of you may think we talk to recruit’s about winning NC’s. I was one of those people. Then he said something amazing. We talk to recruit’s about where they expect to be at age 30. Then we focus on Education, Character, Honesty and Integrity. We talk to them about getting a good job, being a good husband and father. We focus on family.
Tony said if we can develop boys into good men they will be winners on and off the field.

I left that event so impressed with both coaches and the program Dabo was building at Clemson. Even during a season of adversity we still won 9 games, held UGA’s offense to 3 points and have a chance to win 10 games in 11 consecutive years. That is pretty awesome in my opinion.

I Still believe we are building for another elite run.

By "roughly 853 drafted" aren't you referring to both the actual draft numbers plus all the free agent signings following the draft. That's the only way a number like 853 could be realized.

I would offer that while your premise is sound, you make an assumption that in EVERY CASE a player is transferring with the intent of improving their draft status, which is a spurious argument.

Many players, some very gifted, just aren't getting on the field at their home institution - and are realizing that their window for actually playing college ball is closing. Many are just looking for a place where they can play.

Now, your examples do speak to a problem in that there just are not sufficient scholarships open for the numbers that are in the portal. Some will be disappointed, will not find a place to which they can transfer, and will forfeit either the end of their collegiate opportunities, athletic and academic, or will have to pay their own way if they have yet to graduate.

I think I have read that only 25% of D-1 players in the portal...

32 teams * 53 player active roster limit = 1696 total NFL players at any given time.
