Early NY Resolutions

Posting this in /pol because mine has more to do with it than elsewhere...but you lunger guys feel free to get in.
My new years resolution is to draw down my time on the politics bored. It's part of a larger reset of my overall social media use, backing away from national politics to focus more on local issues, and specifically with what I see as a crisis of faith within the modern evangelical church because of national politics. TNET in particular over the last year has caused me far too often to violate my standing rule of no arguing on the internet. Debate of any kind is stupid in general, and actually arguing over the same issue day in and day out is even worse. No mas.
I'll still be dropping articles I find interesting and provide some interesting perspectives (probably heavy on The Atlantic or David French), but not engaging nearly as much.
What about you guys?

might make it more specific and do 52 or 100 books. If anyone is interested in a politics book club, let me know, would probably be more constructive than most this board. I'm starting And There Was Light, but open to all sorts of topics.
I really like David French btw. I need more voices like his to get me out of my echo chamber.

giving; not just the planned monthly gifts, but listening to our hearts and responding to the call when we feel we're being moved by an opportunity. When I was briefly in the E.D. last month, I found out through talking to my nurse that her son (16) was diagnosed with cancer, and her insurance was not covering the specific (and expensive) therapy he really needed. Those stories are hard enough, but with a 3-year-old at home, it hits hard. A few days later, we dropped off a card and a check to her. It didn't come close to what she needed, obviously, but we just hoped it could cover some meals or travel expenses -- all the other stuff that just starts burying you. All of this is to say the thank you note we got from her brought me infinitely more joy than anything I got from TNET, Twitter, extracurriculars, etc. It just really helped cement this growing perspective for me that, especially for Christians who are called as a matter of faith to good works, a fulfilled and Godly life is not fighting in political trenches, but serving others and bettering the world around us. It really reinforced the need to cut things that don't truly spark joy, and focus on stuff that does.

Good thoughts. You’re making a lot of sense. When you mentioned the crisis of faith I think I know what you mean. Churches can easily get pulled off mission by the “noise” of politics and societal changes. The church is in a difficult spot right now because the political and societal influence is encroaching into the church. The church must somehow keep focus on the true mission while at the same time fight off the wolves.
I agree with you that there’s tremendous joy in giving. Many times we have been made to be suckers but that doesn’t negate the joy and command to give.

So much more important stuff than most of the crap we talk about on this board. If everyone becomes concerned about their neighbor then we'll be alright. This board is about the only time I "talk" about politics.
I'm with Jefferson on this (and many other things), "I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy as cause for withdrawing from a friend."

Governments function well. When a government has a problem, when there is a structural problem, war, or some other crisis, that luxury of debating politics becomes pointless. A distraction. Futile.
When politics matter, when politics offers actionable alternatives and sokutions, it is useful and worthy of debate. When politics ceases to have an impact, because of a more universal problem in the function of government, politics becomes a diversion. Often hiding the bigger problem. Even used to hide the bigger problem.
So I've been out. Many years now actually. I don't debate politics anymore because it doesn't matter.

I’m seeing more people come to a state of apathy with our government. Our government is failing us and many are realizing that reality. So, I do see political debates cooling off as more people come to terms with the fact that our government is dysfunctional.

everyone sees what's happening. Libs, pubs, both are disenchanted. And we can elect a Tea Party, or a bunch of liberals, doesn't matter. There isn't a republican or a democrat solution to a system that's broken. If it works, then there are advantages and disadvantages to whom we elect to lead us. At this point, the politics matter little. We're still spending $1.7 trillion on the next bill, and heading to $34,000,000,000,000.00 national debt, our kids will be saddled with. No party stops illegal immigration, balances our trade deficit, raises minimum wage, or spends less. Doesn't happen no matter who you vote for because EVERYONE buys our votes and we all vote for whoever promises ME the most, and says what we like to hear. Spending debt has never cost a politician a vote, quite the opposite. Cutting spending, raising taxes, or both, have.
