My life in Columbus, Ohio

Nov 21, 2019, 8:12 AM

I’m a Clemson grad in ‘13, and from there I moved to Baton Rouge for 5 years and attended a semester of LSU. I never really got into LSU while I was there for whatever reason despite it being the biggest thing in Baton Rouge.

I moved up to Columbus several months ago and am now in Buckeye central. I visited Ohio State as well and have gotten to know the people around Columbus. This weekend I’m going to the Penn State game at our Church and am pretty pumped about that.

These guys definitely live and breathe Buckeye. Everyone I’ve met has been super friendly and not at all antagonistic. I mean good football is good football, and Ohio is a #### good team right now and fun to watch.

I found it kind of interesting to be a Clemson guy who has lived both in Baton Rouge then Columbus. Columbus is actually a great city with tons of family activities for my daughter and son and couldn’t be happier. It’s clean and growing massively right now.

That being said I really look forward to a Clemson - Ohio State showdown with my new Buckeye friends. That should be pretty exhilarating.

Anyways, just wanted to put my two cents there and couldn’t be prouder to be a Clemson guy anywhere I go. I normally get, “Clemson huh? How come???”.

a year and have to deal with them. My only problem with them is their blindness to all things Ohio State. When we played them two years ago I was at a lunch and everyone at the table, except me and my boss, were Buckeyes (my boss is a Miami Ohio man), anyway when they asked me about the game I said we weren't worried about them, that we wanted Bama. After the 31 point beat down my boss called me laughing said he didn't know how prophetic I was.

I graduated from Clemson in '16 and shortly after moved to the Cleveland area. Whenever Ohio people hear that I went to Clemson, I usually get a look of disbelief and also some shade thrown in the form of "Ohio State has the better team this year". The fans for the most part are very obnoxious and I honestly hope they drop one to PSU or Michigan so they don't even get to grace the same field as our Tigers.

I live in the Akron area and definitely see the obnoxious side. Fortunately, everyone in my office/friend/church group has learned to not doubt Clemson and harass me, given their recent success. They definitely learned their lesson back in 2016. Some of them are actually quite interested in Clemson and have asked about all the awesome traditions at Clemson. They also ask for my opinion on the CFB landscape and what/how Clemson fans see. Would love to humble them again in the Semis or National Championship because they think they're on top of the world right now.

I live in Cincinnati, and this is almost identical to my experiences. I did attend one game a few years ago and actually felt the atmosphere prior to game time wasn't that great. Not a huge tailgating scene (possibly because it was a nooner). Once in the stadium though it was pretty impressive.

Most of the OSU fans I work with have also learned not to second guess or taunt me since the 2016 beatdown. Living in Ohio definitely took that outcome to the next level. I also would like to play them again. They act like they're the best on the planet again and would love to bring them back to Earth!

I graduated in 2001 from Clemson and have lived here in the suburbs of Cleveland my whole life. Many co-workers up here are bucks, but we also have a few UNC grads too. Makes for a fun debate on sports for sure.

Wish we had a nice alumni club up here, but don't know many if at all who do live up in NE Ohio to be able to congregate somewhere. Especially when we are hosting the NFL Draft in 2021 and many Clemson players should be here to be drafted including Trevor. Would be nice to throw out the orange carpet for everyone.

I hope you find the Midwest not as nearly as miserable as some would lead you to believe (though you will experience occasional weather misery).

Instead of Buckeyes, I deal with Domers (and some Michigan fans.. but mostly Domers). And by and large the LOCAL fans and alumni I have met over the past several years around town and at games have been great folks. No comment on the national Wal-Mart fans.

Last year's CFP was anti-climactic.

I'm looking forward to Nov 7, 2020.

Nov 21, 2019, 8:31 AM

but Buckeye fans suck in the worst way. Now is a good time to live around them because it has been a while since they won a championship. I think Clemson humbled them a lot, but they'll be full force if they make the playoffs. Things I dislike about tOSU fans:
-they are extremely arrogant and antagonistic
-they wear nut necklaces
-all of the men who attend the games wear jerseys of their favorite early 20s or late teenager/OSU player
-they get extremely violent and destructive during their rivalry week
-they think they are God's gift to college football, despite losing to the coots twice in bowl games
-they fill their ugly stadium up with 100,000+ people who all sit there quietly the entire game. The noise level is 10x less than Death Valley
-they tailgate in parking garages
-95% of their fans never attended a class there, which is saying something because their enrollment is something like 70,000 students

Don't let them fool you. Eventually they will show you their true colors, and it is not a pleasant sight.

Went to the game in 2016 and stayed in a downtown Scottsdale hotel that was probably 75/25 OSU. After that beat down, not one single "good game" from anyone in the hotel. Not even in the elevator the next day.

Just like Urban - who did everything he could to not congratulate Clemson.

It's all about what they didn't do - nothing about what the other team did to whip their ###. They all believe they are #1 and if they aren't, it's because of something they did.

I'm no fan of OSU or their fans, having been there in 2016.

I went to the Orange Bowl in '14 with a Buckeye and tailgated with them before the game, then rode to the game and back with them. Similar experience. They were very hospitable and fun to be around before the game, but after the game it wasn't about the plays Clemson made or how close the game was...it was "How did we lose to Clemson?!" Sitting there in silent satisfaction was fun enough.

I've also spent a considerable amount of time in Charleston and Hilton Head where roughly 40% of the population comes from O310.....and I agree 100% it ain't a pretty sight to see them show their true colors. They are definitely from off and behave accordingly.

That is totally spot on. We had neighbors from Ohio who, thankfully, moved back up there not long ago. When their daughter got married the wedding was themed around OSU and school colors even though not a single member of either the bride's or groom's families attended OSU. We couldn't get over how weird the men looked in their grey tuxedos with scarlet accessories.

When Clemson tromped them 31-0 the insufferable neighbor didn't speak to us for weeks and never once mentioned the game.

Ohio State football is a statewide thing, we don't have a Michigan or Penn State we have Carolina....and not much else in the rivalry category... maybe FSU a few years back would be close... it's in the blood there Saturdays in the fall are about Ohio State football... its been that way for a very long time...

Dislike their weird attachment to that $h|tty 1hitwonder song from the early 70's(maybe late 60's). Dislike their propensity to transplant to the state of SC, that said, the actual transplants sicken me due to their arrogance & hypocritical nature in general.(rivaled only by NJ & Floridian transplants, the detritus of the US pop.)

I was told when I arrived if you dont hate them now the media will soon change that. Over exposed by the media and very inwardly focused. You get sick of seeing everything they do or may do on tv everyday. But then every scandal gets glossed over and there are plenty of them. When you try to talk football most become the stereotypical obnoxious know it all 8 year old from Ohio on the beach in SC. Insufferable. Otherwise Columbus is a nice city. Largest in Ohio.

Not true with Ohio State fans. So many of them have moved out of Ohio.

Thanks for sharing. There is a lot of cultural differences in Midwest fans (ie: wearing jerseys) and fans from other geographical regions. I've never heard of OSU fans being violent or destructive during rivalry week, but I suppose there is a drunken fraternity that has made a headline here or there. I also don't get the hate on OSU fans who never attended OSU. I'm a fan of Wonderboy, but I've never taken a class under him. I cheered for UNC basketball in my youth (before I wised up) and never attended a class there nor resided in the state. Stuff like this is really, really common.

Ohio is filled with a bunch of MAC schools (and UC). They don't have a second "top tier" university like NC, SC, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, etc. There is no one to challenge them in-state and I think that reflects.

The other thing you have to consider is pro football in Ohio has absolutely SUCKED since 1990. The Bucks have been the only football team people can proudly cheer for.

I had a neighbor that is an OSU fan, and every time he gave me crap about CLEMSON, I would remind him that we have beaten OSU every time we played them, and got the best coach they will ever have fired when he got his butt kicked. "Yankee" finally moved away. When he comes around to visit sometimes, and asks how the neighborhood is doing, I just let him know that it's doing fine now that we got rid of all the bad ones. I'm not sure he even realizes that I'm talking about him.

Grew up in Ohio, now live in SC. Clemson and Dabo converted me, love the place and the program. Still closely follow the Bucks and there is only one game I would root for another team and that's Clemson. Fans are fans, and Ohio State fans are big time fans. The Shoe and the environment around the stadium on game day does not compare to Clemson (Clemson wins in a runaway) but when TBDBITL takes the field for the pregame it's just as fun as the hill run... player walk is also very cool (same as Tiger Walk)... if your going, go to the Skull sessions, it fantastic...

Anyway Bucks fans are what they are, it's a great program with a huge fanbase... and they love their Buckeyes...

Go Tigers...

So after reading this thread, it doesn’t sound all that different than Clemson’s fan base, just larger.

-Clemson fans are die hard and passionate.
-Clemson fans are very vocal about their support for Clemson and their confidence in their team.
-Clemson fans wear orange and have paws on anything they can.

I see a lot of shots fired that sound like complete opinion and conjecture. Shoot, I work with a Clemson grad/fan that actually said one time “if the Tigers played the redskins, I’d expect them to win until they didn’t.”
These people exist in every fan base, especially those loyal to elite teams.

Getting in the internet and trash talking other bases about being inferior in every facet of life, is exactly what y’all are complaining about. Haha

Go Tigers!
