My knee jerk reaction to Saban's comments.

May 19, 2022, 4:54 PM

Just want to focus on Saban's comments in this post, not mention Jimbo's response. I may do that later. (Lest anyone misunderstand, remember I have a lower opinion of Jimbo than probably anyone else on this board.)

When I read Nick's comments I said to myself, "Is Nick planting the seeds saying that if the NIL stuff doesn't get under control soon or if it spirals even further out of control he might just decide to walk away and spend time at the lake on his boat?"

Note: I'm not saying for sure that is what his motives were. I'm not predicting that he will retire in a year or two. I'm just saying I can see the scenario where he might.

Note: I suspect several coaches are pondering their long term futures. "Is college football going to change so much in the next few years that it just ain't worth it?"

You are probably spot on. NIL is going to kill college sports.

Former FSU player Travis Johnson just stated that Alabama offered him six figures. Sit back and enjoy the show because this is about to get interesting.

There will be a lot of "he said-he said" situations. Get your popcorn ready.

Hope these donors go broke. What an absolute waste

its one thing to give money to the school which funds scholarships and provides competitive facilities etc. to get decent seats at the game. It's a whole different situation to buy players. Lot better ways to spend my money.

i had a similar reaction.

my first thought was: Wow he basically said if i don’t win every game it’s because NIL. I think he knows his time has come and the ride is almost over.

He was in six of the last seven NCG, including the last two.

That idea did pop into my mind as well. Saban will be 71 in a few months.

Remember his audience. He was speaking to group of Alabama business people.

This was simply a recruiting trip that didn't involve players.

supporters and basically telling them to pony up if they wanted to keep winning national championships.

He also criticized Saban for oversigning and running people off in the early years of his Bama tenure.

Saban will adapt.

You're thinking too hard about it. Saban's comments were about one thing and one thing only: getting the Bama boosters to organize better to offer recruits more money.

I had a former Wofford/Illinois Olineman come into my place of business. I see him a couple times of year. We were talking about NIL. He said it’s nuts and you don’t even see the half of it. He said some Texas Tech booster is giving $50,000 to every player on the team. No wonder their recruiting class is great right now.

No big fan of Saban, but right now we really need people of

his stature in college football making the comments he made about the NIL and A&M. This gets attention to what a sleazy, out of control mess it is right now. And frankly, it will destroy college football if more people don't call it out and say is this really the way we're going to do things?
