My guess on the coaching carousel.

Disclaimer: I know nothing. I have no sources. I'm just a guy who has been following the coaching carousel for 20+ years and have fun trying to separate fact from fiction. 20 years ago it was hard, but much easier than today, to do that. AD's have learned how to keep the search out of the media and avoid leaks much better today than then. So with that said, here is my 100% guesses as to what is going on.
1. LSU is going elephant hunting. They are working very hard to get Jimbo Fisher. Jimbo, through his agent Jimmy Sexton, is trying to see just how much money he can get. He may be trying to get aTm and LSU in a bidding war (which is exactly what he did when he picked aTm). Or he may be just letting Sexton do his thing and telling him, "I'm perfectly happy at aTm, but go ahead and see what LSU will offer.
2. If LSU doesn't get Fisher, they will continue to elephant hunt. If they get their elephant, whoever it is, the guy will get a contract significantly larger than what Fisher has now.
3. TCU has two guys they are targeting. I have no idea which of the two are at the top. Sonny Dykes and Billy Napier. Dykes is deciding whether or not he wants the job. Napier is holding out until LSU makes a hire. (He's hoping they miss on the elephants and offer him the job.)
4. If TCU misses on Dykes and Napier they have done due diligence and interviewed several guys on their B list. Elliott is on that list. I have no idea where he ranks on the B list.
5. Southern Cal has two guys on their A list - James Franklin and Luke Fickell. (Not sure what order they are in.) Not sure if either wants the job.
Those are the scenarios that seem the most logical to me. But, I know nothing. I thought Dan Mullen was going to be fired on Sunday or Monday. (I still don't know why they didn't. What they did, have him fire two coaches but not fire him, makes no sense to me.)
If he doesn't get the TCU job, I still expect Elliott's name to come up on other lists as the carousel spins.

I think Tony is 3rd or 4th in TCU's list. My cousin in Ft Worth said Dion Sanders had an impressive interview plus Ladamian Tomlinson is on the committee and is friend of Dion. Also Campbell at Iowa St was on the list, but I don't know if that would be enough of an upgrade to leave. So I guess Dykes, Campbell(if interested), Napier, Elliott, Sanders.

If Dykes or Napier move(Napier to LSU or SMU if Dykes to TCU) Tony could very well end up at Lousiana.

Dion s a slam dunk at Tcu. Can you imagine Dion coming to your house to recruit you? Talking about he can get you to the NFL. That program gets alot of support too. He can talk marketing agent s and contract as it relates to NIL.

Disclaimer; Why would LSU go elephant hunting. I would think they would go "Tiger" hunting; get it, Tiger. Now Alabama would go elephant hunting. So now that I have gotten my sick humor out of the way because it is raining on my golf outing, you do present a good case for Jimbo, Dykes ,or Napier ,but I can't see Elliott getting the job. Yes I know some people say he is qualified because he has two National Championship rings, but that was as co-coordinator and IMO, he has slipped a bit this year with out T.L or T.E.

No surprise that Fickell is on SoCal's list...

The AD at USC is the same guy who hired Fickell at Cincinnati.

If Fisher were to leave A&M for LSU, that would get ugly, like Kiffin leaving Tennessee ugly.
Fisher may get offered the job, but I don’t think he’d take it. He’s got it made in College Station. Also, his son has some type of heart issue and one of the reasons for him moving to Texas was supposedly there is a nearby hospital that can treat his condition.

Jumbo may be willing to take the leap. Not sure how hot the heat is in college station. He's been recruiting pretty good. I imagine the Bama win has cranked the AC and cooled a lot of that heat. Craps the bed this week against ole missy and the AC may be turned off again. Just my guess but stays put no matter what.
So, I guess Mullen gets to stay... Unless, and I so hope your team wins. Lose that one, he might be added to the unemployed.
Not sure on the USC job. Just don't see them getting franklin, although I'm sure you're spot on that they want him. Word is in happy valley, many want to move on since he hasn't cracked the osu safe and made the cfp.
Really think imho, this season and the negative exposure Elliott's received, his stock plummeted. Nose dived. Would have been top of the tcu list and would have been mentioned in LSU as well as USC.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.

The old Tennessee Titans coach
He’s expressed interest in the job before ...
Actually now that I google it, he is a candidate at USC

I can't see Fischer going to LSU for big reason. Money. A&M has plenty of it and LSU does not have the money to pay the buyout clause for both coach O and jimbo plus offer a large enough contract to make him leave A&M.

Purely guessing as well, but maybe Florida knew the 2 assistants were major problems and allowed Mullen to think he was saving himself by firing them immediately. That guarantees the 2 assistants won't be a part of the situation once Mullen is fired.
I would imagine a school like Florida has seen how bad things can get if you fire a head coach coach without having another on the hook.
I'm guessing they are letting Mullen ride it out until they hook their next fish.
I know they don't have much in the way of recruiting lined up at the moment, but that would get much worse in a hurry if they fire Mullen with nothing to tell recruits about who is going to be next.

Here are my guesses. Fickell to USC, Mel Tucker to LSU, Sanders to TCU, Jimbo stays put. Elliott maybe to Cincinnati, but more likely an OSU assistant. Wild scenario: Matt Rhule and Joe Brady go to LSU as HC and OC.

I heard through the grapevine that Brent Venebles is interested in the TCU job. Anyone else heard anything about that? Just curious.

Who are the "elephants" in the college coaching world?
Nov 12, 2021, 10:15 AM
|
|
Is it the active college coaches that have won a National Championship? If so that would be: Nick Saban Dabo Swinney Ed Orgeron Jimbo Fisher Mack Brown
Is it active college coaches that have made it to the CFP playoffs but no championship? Lincoln Riley Kirby Smart Brian Kelly
Does the elephants include coaches that met the two categories above but, for one reason or another, are out of the college game right now? Urban Meyer Les Miles Mark Helfrich Mark Dantonio Bob Stoops
Winning National Championships is very hard. of the list above only Saban, Swinney, (and NFL coach Meyer) have done it more than once which makes them the rare elephants - "proven winners" and not one hit wonders that caught lightning in a bottle.
I don't think LSU can match the money of Texas A&M if it becomes a bidding war for Jimbo Fisher even if Jimbo expresses some level of interest. Considering that Saban ain't leaving Bama and Dabo ain't leaving Clemson it really does make me wonder who the "proven" coaches are that LSU may be hunting - Riley from Oklahoma??
At the end of the day, I think the higher odds are that LSU will probably end up hiring someone that is a solid coach currently at a lower level (Fickell, Napier, Dykes, Chadwell kind of guy)...

Franklin would be a perfect fit at USC. But he is very close to having it all at PSU.
