My first serious question: Seriously NIL

Jan 8, 2022, 7:21 PM

How can college football survive when players can be poached on a year to year basis? What about the guys who are backing up said guy? Even the NFL does not allow this...What are the tax codes? Do you think the IRS is not going to get involved? You think The Mafia is dead? Thoughts????

National Letters of Intent will have to turn into contracts

Jan 8, 2022, 7:30 PM

That's really the only way college football can survive this long term.

I think we should be concerned about the nexus of NIL $ and sports betting. College football as we have known it will be a thing of the past. And it won't take long.

The question for Clemson is whether Dabo will go along, go away or go somewhere in between...

We have a winner!

If kids are getting payed a million dollars to play for a certain school, how long will it be until a kid is paid 100K to make sure his team doesn't cover the spread?

Not only are pro sports now using gambling as a marketing tool, so are college sports.

Re: My first ?? - NIL: Amateur status / newspaper article

Jan 8, 2022, 7:46 PM

For the NIL to become manageable and to prevent college football from becoming a free-for-all / monetary bidding for HS players (whether HS or already at another college), the NCAA must be re-set as a true "Amateur Only" platform for athletic competition amongst its member institutions.

Schools which opt out of the NCAA's "Amateur Only" parameters will have to decide how to organize their own 'professional' athletic leagues.

For the "amateur only" version of the NCAA, there must be enforceable contracts which prohibit the college athlete from being able to have part time jobs or any other 'inside of college' or 'outside of college' jobs.

A big time Texas Tech alum who became successful in business (Mr. Cody Campbell) has proposed an excellent preliminary model for accomplishing this. The link to the Fort Worth Telegram article (a 2 pager which is dated December 29, 2021 ... see below) can be cut-and-pasted into your favorite search engine's "search" section, if you're interested in learning more.

Where is the 50k per player going to come from? I can see the Alabamas of the world paying it but maybe not the Rutgers.Do the rich schools subsidize the weak ones? Does the 3rd string walk-on punter get the same salary as the star QB?

Re: My first ?? - NIL: Amateur status / newspaper article

It's not a panacea but a good starting point as he suggests. As stated in the article, there is good and bad consequences. Action/reaction. The premise is something has to be done. The NCAA can't contain it. The states have already established a precedent.

All jokes aside about jumbo fisher and Texas AM, what happens in 2 years, a year, whatever when they win a national championship. How legit will it be? How long b4 Miami buys one, USC, Rutgers?

In this nation built on freedom and capitalism, do you really thing NIL will be taken away from athletes? NIL is not evil.

Re: My first ?? - NIL: Amateur status / newspaper article

Jan 8, 2022, 9:00 PM

If operated they way it was intended not evil. CFB and college athletics are such a different animal then the normal business world and capitalism. The brand ultimately depends on some sort of equity much like the NFL, but there are no flipping rules like there are in the NFL.

Opening up a way for boosters to legally pay players is not good. Who do you think pays the bills for the profitable CFB sports. The fans. This is a death warrant for CFB and this is coming from someone who thinks Saturdays from September- December are sacred due to watching the games. The sport cannot survive without a semi level playing field. This is also why the playoffs should be expanded. Not because 16 is going to beat number 1, but to maintain interest.

Extremely strict guidelines need to be instituted with extremely strict penalties including the death penalty for a program and legal ramifications.

Once we stop watching the sport is done as well as all other sports in CFB.

Fact, people that earn money pay taxes. The IRS is involved with all Americans that earn money.
