My biggest worry for all small town colleges that has had

Apr 5, 2022, 12:23 PM

strong FB programs like Clemson. When the courts decided they needed to have some control over college sports, and how to pay armature college players a professional salary that they called the NIL for the purpose only keeping college players, as armature players.

Where the courts they failed measurably in the NIL guide lines, is that mostly high profile armature players would be getting contracted to the big time advertising money, and the non high profile players wouldn't be contracted into big advertising money, and the colleges located in the smaller towns across America would be at a great disadvantage to the NIL money, than the colleges in the bigger cities where NIL opportunities will be abundant.

Now what is happening, and will get much worse, is that less and less HS players will be recruited to play college FB with the trade off always being a free college education now competing with the NIL.

Long term NIL will force colleges in small town America to drop most scholarship sports programs bc the NIL will have made it to difficult to recruit the elite athletes that the small town sports programs has survived on since college sports became one of America's favorite pastimes.

The results from the NIL will end up causing thousand of poor HS athletes to no longer have an opportunity to go to college on a sports related scholarship bc the big city colleges will be loaded with only 5 star recruits, leaving small town colleges not being able to compete at the big city NIL level, that will cause small town schools to no longer have a need to recruit bc most of those types of colleges will drop most sports programs bc lack of funds to support them. And I do believe that Clemson in time, will do the same for the same reason, lack of funds to support most athletic programs. And bc the courts didn't have a plan before interfering in college sports.

an athletic scholarship now and in the future.

There are tons of schools that have never competed at "that level" and yet have sports and provide scholarships.

I'm thinking places like Converse, Belmont Abbey, Limestone, Western Carolina and of course U of SCar just to name a few off the top of my head.

I hear what you're saying about NIL long-term but to me it's

more about alumni base size of a school than the city or location size that will have an outsized impact.

While the NCAA cannot limit an individual's revenue opportunities in lieu of court decisions and new state legislation efforts, it should be in a position to enforce parameters per program with limits on eligibility to participate. For instance, "you can make all the money you want to as an individual via NIL but Program A is near their overall limit so they are not an option for you." Should Program A bring this player in anyway and surpass its NIL limit, it would not be eligible for the post-season.

IN the spirit of competition: "this post is the best solution I have seen since the NIL-dash started"!

Because, as Nick Saban stated to the NCAA if you want me to just punish you and for Alabama to get even stronger continue down the path you are on.
And, "he adapted and started using some of the same tactics but with across the board better players"!

In short, I like this! I think you are on to something!

Sounds like a Salary Cap. Since NIL is, by rule, NOT tied to

the school, hard to see how the NCAA could be in a position to legally enforce anything like that. Even though, there does need to be some way, some how, to level the playing field again. Texas Big Oil money is doing their best to buy a Championship at Texas A&M. That, combined with "helicopter parents" like Big Dave essentially pimping out their child to the highest bidder, and it gets out of control real quick.

If my memory is correct it was a California court that made NIL the law of the land. Guess which state has some pretty big advertising markets?

It's the advertising markets in the smaller states, and the smaller towns that's not going to produce the bigger companies that willing to pay college kid even close to places in the bigger states, and cities will be producing, that will without a doubt pull the better athletes to those schools. With coot U setting in the capital city in the middle of the state will seriously hurt Clemson with the bigger pay outs with NIL money. Fans or who ever can scream no no no all they want to, but Clemson won't be able to keep up with the Jimmy's and the Joe's with NIL money for our players as long as ESECPN and the media continues to preach SEC FB as being the best in college FB.

I couldn't see the coots winning a Natty in my life time the way that it was before the NIL, but with them being in the SEC, and with them being in a lot bigger city than Clemson, they could very well pass Clemson in recruiting bc of the facts I've mentioned, they should be able to produce more NIL money than us with them being in the SEC and the bigger city where NIL money will be at. It may take them them a few year to over take us in recruiting, but I think that they bc of they're location along with being in the SEC where NIL money will want to be!!!! Believe me when I say I hope not, but I just don't see Clemson grabbing up more NIL money than the coots will once this NIL thing really takes a strong hold in college FB.

Life in the new liberal USA. We better learn how to adapt. We are too small to be able to cause a change in the current policy.

Wouldn't 18-24 year olds typically use the internet for marketing purposes?

For example, a Google search for Will Shipley shirt turned up:

About 1,000,000 results (0.56 seconds)
Ads·Shop will shipley shirt

I don't see where Clemson being in a small town has hurt the proceeds he is sharing with the children's hospital.

The NCAA and colleges and universities used the Names, Images and Likeness of thousands of college athletes for decades to make money while they had rules, not laws, that prohibited the athletes from being paid for the use of their NIL. An athlete sued and the court, I think rightfully, found that it was improper for the NIL of a person to be used without compensation. I think that makes sense. Most of us would not like it if without our permission, agreement or contract someone else started to use our own NIL to make money.

The failure here was for the NCAA to recognize the wrong and right it. When the politicians found they could enhance their own power base by passing state by state laws regarding NIL, the genie was out of the bottle.

This has been coming for decades and the collegiate industry failed to take action to make the process fair, even and better controlled.

It is a mess. It is too bad. But I do not think it was the court that erred.

When you sign your letter of intent, there is a clause which says you agree to the use of your name, image, likeness. It's not done without consent of the athlete.

This happened with Pitt last year - their qb got NILs and he took care of his OL, et al

Pittsburgh is a big city, not as big as Atlanta

Pickett also quit on his team as well!

Playing football is the only way to get good at it. He could have played and just been a quick game thrower of the football or audible and hand it off or something( just kidding ).

Still only allowed to have 85 scholarships ya'll! And you can still only play 11 at a time. Even if they are more talented "on paper"; if the superior on paper talent is out there playing for themselves and not as a team; they can be beaten "still"!
