My Belated Thoughts re the Virginia Game

Oct 4, 2020, 6:03 PM

First, I will admit that Virginia is a much improved team and this bodes well for the future of the ACC. I also recognize that we are the hunted and every team we play is going to give us their best shot and that is as it should be. A championship team, like Clemson, should expect this and be prepared for every team we face. Last night was not one of our better games but with superior talent we were able to win.

For the most part, what I saw was not pretty, but on the other hand there were some outstanding individual performances and we scored when we needed to. I fussed and fumed during the game because of unnecessary penalties, dropped balls, missed tackles and other obvious mistakes. I thought our play calling during the last couple of minutes before the half was a mistake. We went for the long pass on three downs when I thought we should have used ball control to use the clock to move down field in hopes of getting a TD or field goal before the half. As we all recall, our failure to convert resulted in a punt and Virginia moved down the field for a TD.

What surprised me even more was our apparent lack of making corrections in the second half. After getting in my bed and clearing some of the cobwebs and looking at the overall game, I felt better about some of the things we didn't do re corrections, etc. Were we trying to play as simple as possible to give Miami a false impression? I could visualize the Miami players and coaching staff licking their chops if they were watching the game. It was obvious we were going to win so why should we show all of our ammo. With all of this being said, we still made a lot of mistakes that I hope can be corrected this week. Maybe the Virginia game was our annual "wake up" call.

Agree. Good post

Mostly agree Joe! The timeout we took on defense on VAs td

drive was a mistake. Got a little greedy. They didn't have any and after the sack, might have decided to run out the clock.

Joe you saw the same game that I did. That was not the Clemson I have watched during these glory years. The Offensive line was beaten badly on a number of occasions. The focus was definately not there last night. Virginia is a good team. Their new QB made a ton of big plays against a Tiger defense that is highly regarded. The Cavs aren’t that good but they were last night when it counted. We should not complain about a three touchdown win. I guess we’ve all been spoiled a little. Miami will bring it Saturday night. Anxious to see the Tiger team that runs down the hill at 7:30.

Always wanted to say that during political season. :)

I agree, it was a very vanilla game plan.

Is Virginia any good?

We will see, they beat Duke. Duke is really bad.

No debate on your summary of observations Joe ...

1) UVA may be underrated. Bronco & coaches are tough and organized.
2) Great point about improving UVA being good for ACC conference strength.
3) IMHO MIA may be a little overrated based on poor competition they've played to date.
4) Dabo & BV seem to respect the way Bronco performs his business. As you state, maybe they have saved some game tricks for MIA.

Looking forward to Game Day next weekend. Go Tigers!

Good Points.

UVA is very good at the line of scrimmage on both sides. They are built from the inside and they are working on upgrading the "outside"!
They will eventually have both at the same time as long as Mendenhall is there. I liken them to Boise State a few years back when they were tough.

Tough and gritty and not many if any 4 and 5 star players. Just 3 stars guys who "were built up by the program"!

In other words, many have overreacted to "only winning by 18" against a good UVA team.

*I get it. Auburn and UGA were playing and UGA beat a high rated team in pretty much dominating fashion. Same with Alabama. I personally was not overly impressed with Florida's defense. But, yeah, they looking good. So people panic.
* The thing is - we don't play the championship game or playoffs for at least a few months. We have new starters and this was the 1st super physical team we played. The team did well and will have a really good idea of what to expect next time. It will help them more than UVA can no. Luckily we won; but I think Pitt in 16 was a major reason we won it all. Their physical hit you in the mouth in the trenches style "helped" believe it or not.

Joe, my mental notes on the game were about the same....

I was at the game and I have not had a chance to go back look at the TV recording.

Hopefully we were keeping the whoopass in the can and will open it next week.

We're still shaking off the rust and seasoning young, less experienced players. We'll be fine.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

IMHO,O-line and D-line did not control the line of scrimmage. Seemed like gap integrity was not maintained and #5 and #21 had positive yards. Did not see hands in the air during the passes on D (except #11 one time did get a tip, but the slingshot throwing style 5 had from the stands looked like hands would have caused more throwing lane issues. We could not run in the middle of the field, the success was mostly on mis direction not straight ahead power move the line of scrimmage kind of running I am used to seeing. VA D line could be that good but I what I saw from 'Bama was far better, our O line needs to get better.

King next weekend is going to be a notch up from 5, hope we learned and can improve.

Good win overall, Amari Rogers has come into his own. F Ladson jr. is the next Higgens if he keeps it up. Good routes and good hands. 13 came thru as well and ETN as a receiver is a new dimension. Not sure what is going on with the tight ends.

Andrew Booth had an awesome game, Turner as well, they both were great in coverage.

Anyone else thinking the coaching staff is slowly opening up the playbook and doing what needs to be done without showing to much?

Was surprised to see the three man defensive front, but was this to really make those lineman and the linebackers work? Virginia obviously relying on the run so we could have used a 4 or 5 man front and just imposed stress.

On offense, felt like a lot of the same plays over and over. No stretching the middle with Galloway or Cooper.

This seems to be the usual plan, the game is in hand therefore don't open up the playbook and give yourself things to work on for the next week of practice.
