My age group were as scared of Polio Virus & inability to visually see it..

as we are today 60-70 years later concerning the unseeable COVID19. And, seeing people confined to that huge dreadful metal breathing box called the Iron Lung was a feeling of fear next to death itself.
Going back to earlier pandemics, around 550 AD the pox spread & wiped out massive amounts of populations in many middle Eastern countries..even coming back again 200 & 500 years later..killing an estimated 1 Billion people according to article this week in the New Yorker.
Saying, we humans are as vulnerable even now in this oh-so-smart space & electronic age as those early souls.
But, the positive take-away is that the majority survive and move on with life.

I was born in '51 and I remember going to the local (Myrtle Beach AFB?) school house to be vaccinated for polio. This was before the sugar cube. Me and my Mom were second in a line that stretched all the way down a long hall, down the steps, down the hall of the first floor and out the door. I peeked around the door to see the first kid get poked in the arm. He screamed and I decided I didn't want any part of that. I bolted down the hall followed by every other kid in the building. It was pandimonium before all the parents got there kids back in order. I don't even remember eventually getting the shot! I do remember my dad having some stern words later about creating a riot!
Go Tigers, be well and safe, y'all

frightened parents were of the illness.
I, also, suffered at age seven a severe kidney illness that left me completely bedridden for four months, not even able to walk to the bathroom.
I put myself through some of the most rigorous training the U.S. Army offered at Ft. Benning, Georgia, jumped out of planes nearly 200 times across the world and served 13 months in a hostile-fire zone.
Additionally, I scraped and clawed my way through dirt and mud to build a business, faced other major national tragedies and illnesses and the loss of my only son this past year.
My attitude now: I am not afraid nor panicky. I am following recommended guidelines but have not barricaded myself at home.
AND, most importantly, I know dammmmn well that eventually this crisis will pass, that we will return to work, and if and when this coronavirus rears its ugly head again, we will be well-prepared to stare the sunuvab*tch in the face and march on!

Standing in line above the Loggia in one of the meeting rooms and getting a polio shot in the early 60’s. Every student was required to get the shot plus another one as well. The scare of the mid 50’s had passed by then but it was a real experience compared with the one we are now going through with Corona. I remember Dr. Jonas Salk was a real hero for his marvelous discovery in about 1955. I’m sure many remember these horrific times.
I’m not totally convinced that this new virus isn’t man made but it hasn’t been mentioned by anyone. IF this ‘plague’ returns, America will be better equipped to handle it. Meanwhile we can only bite the bullet! It’s a long, long way from being resolved. No football is a possible reality and that hurts.

Remember the whole family standing in long lines twice at the high school flagpole waiting for the sugar cube with polio vaccine once and a shot, I think, the second time. We all knew people with polio. What an awful disease. You young'uns ever heard of an iron lung machine?

Also did the same thing in grade school for smallpox. Scratch the arm, paint on the vaccine, and try not to scratch the itchy spot 'till the scab fell off. Thought I was going to die with the "German Measles" and the mumps when I was a kid. Can't understand the idiots who refuse to get their children vaccinated. They are like a "Jim Jones cult".

Almost every summer Charleston was known for Malaria and Yellow Fever. That is why there were summer homes inland. Ergo Walterboro, Hampton, Kingstree, Moncks Corner, Galivants Ferry, etc. are about equal distance inland.

So, the solution is for the Chinese to stop eating bats and rats and passing their diseases onto the world's population?
Or is it just another Sodom and Gomorrah warning?
Just food for thought.
btw: I could be wrong, but during WWII Americans had the polio vaccination scar on their arm, but the Germans did not. Why were the Germans exempt from polio? Was that just in America? I have the scar, but my kids and grandchildren do not.
