my 1977 Notre Dame story... please forgive grammar and typos

Nov 5, 2020, 7:58 PM

as I have a buzz. Younger folks probably can't appreciate what it meant to have the golden domers come to lil ol Clemson SC in 1977. ND was the ultimate mackdaddy in those days. When very few games were televised at all, Notre Dame had their own nationwide show on Sundays! Lindsay Nelson was the host... a 30 minute recap of Sat's game with highlights. The only college team in the nation with that.

So the hair raised up on my neck when I watched the green-and-gold run out onto the Death Valley field. This was unbelievable, totally surreal. And this Notre Dame team was strong... Joe Montana at QB, Vegas Ferguson at RB, and a ton of All Americans all across the lineup. But there we were leading the game, until Steve Fuller fumbled late, and those mofos ended up winning. But we gained a ton of respect that day across the nation. That Notre Dame team ended up winning the nat'l title.

You can read about the "silent treatment" we did that day elsewhere. I still hate Dan Devine with every fiber of my being. The flasks, minibottles and one-hitters were plentiful in the student section... it was rockin.

I had made reservations at Pixie & Bills for dinner after the game. This was the best steakhouse in the area at the time. So this poor boy had saved up and was splurging big time. But a big fat family of Notre Dame fans came in and ruined everything. The dad was big, and fat, and loud. His wife and kids were the same. Big. Fat. Loud. Obnoxious. Complained about everything loudly and were total azzholes. You know what I mean. To this day I still call them the "Fat n Irish" from that experience. LOL

We ignored them and tried not to let them ruin our meal. And then we went to a Pablo Cruise concert at Littlejohn that night. Good times. I still have the ticket stubs from the game and concert.

A drunk will run a STOP sign, but a stoner will wait for it to turn green.

Pigs of the big fat Irish mom?

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

I was at the game. Joe M gave the Tiger fans the finger at the end of the game as the team was leaving the field headed to the locker room. A whiskey bottle came out of the stands and miss Joe M's head by about 2 inches. Tuff night for Clemson fans.

I had no bad feelings about ND prior to that game, and I have had no good feelings since. It all began early in the week when ND Coach Dan Devine sent a telegram to the ACC Commissioner complaining about Clemson fans' stadium noise. That happened days before the game, and hundreds of us mailed Devine earplugs.

Devine behaved much worse during the game and drew some unsportsmanlike conduct flags. He should have been ejected when he came on the field to argue with refs. I have had no use for ND since.

We should have won the game but didn't have ND's player depth and were worn out in the 4th quarter.

you're right, I'd forgotten it all started with a telegram..***

I was at the game, and my most vivid memory was Dan Devine!

Definitely nothing divine about him that day! What I remember was him spending more time on the playing field arguing with refs, than anything else! And I do NOT recall him getting any flags for unsportsmanlike conduct, although he definitely should have! Actually, he should have been tossed from the stadium!

I remember that game also....I was a sophomore. Also the Pablo Cruse concert. I don't have the ticket stub though.

I will never forget the "silent treatment". One of my best Death Valley memories.
