Musings from today's spring game

6

Apr 15, 2023, 7:02 PM

Its only the Spring game so you can't take away too much but this is what I have, take it or leave it.

Thomas is a pretty good back and we knew Mafa was. It makes me feel better about the RB room but still doesn't make me feel better about the lack of recruiting top talent in that position.

Pope and the rest of the TE group looked good and it was great to see us us the middle of the field more often.

WR screen needs to be eliminated from the playbook. It hasn't worked in 5 years and it's a wasted down every time almost.

The PIs are a concern and the QBs outside of Helms looked very shaky to me. Helms, gulp, might be our best pure passer.

Spector is not a good WR and speaking of, is this the last Sweeney? My Lord. WR is a disaster. What the heII happened there?

DL is going to be special. Capehart is nasty and Woods might be immediately our best DL, crazy.

The defense overall looked really good. This is one special group. I hope Mukuba gets back to form, he's not been the same since the elbow injury. He struggled tackling today.

Overall, happy about the defense and still concerned about the offense. I hope Riley can work his magic!!

Why does everyone moan about our receivers after one scrimmage? We were short 4 or 5 who will likely be in out out first 6 so today means nothing..

Are you blind?

Nah, just stupid. Possibly blind too but definitely stupid.

Well you’re right about our best wr’s being out but let’s be honest, none of those are proven players nor have they done special things other than what we have heard they’ve done in practice at one time or another!!!

PBT…you’re exactly right…Helms is our best lure passer right now and maybe our best QB period…he demonstrated poise in the pocket more than anything…the really disappointing thing for me watching the game was the lack of poise in the pocket by Cade…it looked very familiar to last year where he looked figity always and was looking to OBW around whether the pocket was secure or not..:the other thing that bothers me about him and was similar to last year is that he has a propensity to throw the ball into traffic, which in amd of itself is bad enough, but he does it a lot of times moving backwards or off Of his back foot, which a recipe for disaster and turnovers … he had 2 today… you can win games that way amd maybe an ACC championship but you will not beat elite teams that way!!!

DJ stayed in the pocket as a statue too long and locked in too long and was too deliberate…Cade moves too quickly in the pocket amd is too careless with his decisions…we need something in the middle of those…Helms looked like that today!!!

Helms just doesn't have the mobility...

if so I would probably start him over Cade at this point.

Beaux Collins says hello.

What has he done?

Apr 15, 2023, 11:58 PM

I'll wait.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's a decently average WR

1

Apr 16, 2023, 12:25 AM

which makes him better than pretty much every other WR over the last two years outside of Antonio Williams.

You're welcome. Must make you mad that you can't actually say anything.

Go run along and call someone a coot, you're actually good at that.

I thought the run blocking was decent, and all the RBs looked impressive. It would be nice if we could develop a running game against tougher defenses.

We were missing Collins and Randall at WR today, and we probably weren't showing too much on offense. Our starting WRs will be more talented across the board once the season starts. As for Spector I agree, he just takes snaps from better players. He's definitely not the caliber of WR we need getting significant playing time.

Dabo likes him some spec. He wasn't good when Trevor was here.

I'd feel better about wr if they'd managed to keep Ngata. I'm expecting the top 3 wrs to be Williams, Turner, and Johnson.

Realistically, that's probably not a great WR corp unless

Johnson completely blows up.
