Jack Nicklaus-Greatest Major Champion of all time.

Tiger Woods-Greatest physical golfer of all time.

Ben Hogan-Greatest concentration on the course all time.

Arnold Palmer-The King, who brought golf to the masses. Most beloved player in history.

Then, "Backside" of Mount Rushmore, if you will:

Bobby Jones-Greatest Amateur Champion of all time.

Byron Nelson-Golf swing machines are patterned after his swing.

Gary Player-Global Ambassador of the game, still in shape even today.

Sam Snead-Had he ever been able to win even one of the eight US Opens he gave away, he would be higher on this list.

Bobby Jones, Arnold, Jack and Tiger.

Jack would probably not even be a top 5 golfer today. He would be lucky to be in the top 30.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, he is 81 years old, after all.

Apr 8, 2021, 9:46 AM

Seriously, I personally believe Jack would be at the top in any era. He had an unmatched ability to think his way around the course, and assure that his "misses" still left him with chances to save par. He had extraordinary distance in his younger days, even back in those days of small wooden headed drivers. (Just one example, he once drove the ball way OVER the back of the green on the 360 yard 18th hole at St. Andrews. I know there is a lot of roll over there, but nobody else was doing anything like that at the time.) Him in his physical prime, with modern equipment, would be scary.

Re: Well, he is 81 years old, after all.

Apr 8, 2021, 4:30 PM

Well he would not be. It's that simple. Jack would barely win anything now. He would be barely known. The game has progressied that far.

Apr 10, 2021, 1:03 AM [ in reply to Well, he is 81 years old, after all. ]

My son drove it into the "Valley of Sin" on our last visit there ....... I was 150 yards from the center of the green!

I played with both Jack (at Muirfield) and Arnie (Yeamans Hall).

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I assume you're referring to Jack Nicholson.

Apr 8, 2021, 9:52 AM [ in reply to Re: Mt Rushmore of Golf - Who ya got? ]

Nicklaus would mow down anyone in any era.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I assume you're referring to Jack Nicholson.

Apr 8, 2021, 12:45 PM

Nah..he wouldn't. He wouldn't even be a top 10 player this year.

Apr 8, 2021, 10:04 AM [ in reply to Re: Mt Rushmore of Golf - Who ya got? ]

Given the equipment they use today, Nicklaus would be winning on a regular basis. Most likely, if he were playing today, he would also be working out on a regular basis as well.

I'm going with Nicklaus, Woods, Hogan, and Palmer.

Just like Bob Cousy would be lucky to make an NBA roster today. That's where Jack stands.

Like your no BS pragmatic approach CBad ...

Apr 9, 2021, 2:05 PM

But you're wrong on this one. Nicklaus would easily adapt to modern equipment and dominate. But I'll give you Tiger was better in his tip-top prime before he hit the roids and changed his swing.

But longevity at a high level has to be a factor as well - ask Tom Brady.

1. Nicklaus
2. Tiger
3. Sam Snead
4. Player/Hogan/Hagen (pick'em out of hat)

Most popular:

1. Arnie
2. Tiger (pre-meltdown)
3. Bobby Jones (after youthful antics)

Apr 8, 2021, 10:39 AM [ in reply to Re: Mt Rushmore of Golf - Who ya got? ]

Nicklaus would be hitting it as far as DeChambeau with the equipment they use today. Some entity asked for mementos of one of his major wins back in the day and they told him they couldn’t believe he was able to win with the McGregor balls he used because they were so out of round and poorly manufactured.

No he wouldn't. He is tiny in comparison. You're making out to be something he never was. The dude would have zero major today.

I believe the older golfers deserve more credit...

Apr 8, 2021, 11:33 AM [ in reply to Re: Mt Rushmore of Golf - Who ya got? ]

Seriously, you have to give even more credit to the earlier golfers when you consider the technology they used. Bobby Jones and the grand slam, Gene Sarazen hitting "the shot heard round the world" for a 2 on the par 5 #15 at Augusta, Jack and his majors record.

Medical innovations in training, eating, hydration have really raised the bar for golfers today. In the last 20 years, the technology has leapt forward, in club design, shafts, balls. Also to be considered, is the fact that today's courses are in much better shape. I think the older golfers deserve a lot more credit for their accomplishments.

Re: I believe the older golfers deserve more credit...

The competition was weak back then. Apples and oranges. There are millions of more golfers in the world now and better athletes play golf now. Most of the players on tour in the day wouldn't even pull it off now.

Were Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ben Franklin and the founding fathers truly great or just over-rated relics of a past simple era? How do Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, and Albert Einstein compare to today's biotech scientists?

While jumping in to yank your chain a little bit, my take is family genetics and work ethic have to be there. And hand-eye coordination and the right mindset is part of that genetic equation. Nicklaus played all/most courses with a draw -- he played Augusta National with a fade (almost like a right hander favoring his left-hand in the NBA).

Equipment changes. Genetics is ancestral and God-given. Anyway, that's my take. Hit 'em straight and go Tigers!

Mt Rushmore of Golf, or of Masters?

Apr 8, 2021, 10:23 AM

My answers would be different if we are talking Augusta specifically. I previously said Nicklaus, Woods, Palmer, Hogan. If we are talking Augusta National, replace Hogan with Gene Sarazen.

Re: Mt Rushmore of Golf, or of Masters?

Apr 8, 2021, 10:59 AM

Jones - Golf's first star - by playing in professional tournaments, he helped make professional golf "respectable"

Arnie: Popularized the sport and ushered in the television era.

Jack: GOAT

Tiger: Broadened the sport and took it to new levels.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Mt Rushmore of Golf, or of Masters?

Apr 8, 2021, 11:05 AM

Agree that there would be no Masters without Jones, but there is only room for 4, and I would have to recognize The Squire and his shot heard round the world. I agree that without Jones there is no Masters, but I just can't take anyone out. Guess that is why this is a discussion board. If I'm being honest, Sarazen also gets a boost from coming to my childhood golf course in Orangeburg in the late 70s/early 80s. I got to meet him and see him hit a few shots. What a gentleman and player.

An argument can certainly be made for Tiger based on his wins, but for me he misses the cut because I view Mount Rushmore as being reserved for the early pioneers who helped establish the game. Tiger's success was made possible by those guys.
