I stay in North Raleigh (Six Forks near I-540) and love it.
North HIlls is nice if you are a younger professional.
Knightdale has easy access to most highways and you can get to the hotspots quick if you are looking for more bang for your buck, housewise.
Cary is a nightmare and I avoid it like the plague. C.A.R.Y: Containment Area for Relocating Yankees. Same goes for Apex and Holly Springs.
Transitional neighborhoods inside the beltline near downtown are hot right now, but you are going to pay to live inside the beltline.
Hope this helps!

Good thoughts about Raleigh area. I too live in North Raleigh in Leesville Area. The OP should consider where he works and where to live as commuting can be a burden.
A distinct plus to the area is 3 ACC schools local to us plus WF only 1.5 hours away to see our Tigers play.

If you don't mind a 15 minute commute, look into Fuquay-Varina. Houses that cost $300,000 in Apex, Cary or Raleigh can be had all day long for $220,000 in Fuquay and that's with a 1/2 acre of land or more.
Very nice people here, low crime, very good schools if you have kids.
Plus, we suffer from an acute Tiger Fan deficiency here. We could use another.

Heh heh ... you got that right.
Only people with a 15 minute commute to Raleigh (downtown) are those living inside the beltline.

Moving to "RALEIGH" can mean a lot of different things ...

I would strongly encourage you to factor in where you will be working into any decision because traffic, while not Atlanta terrible, can be a challenge and long commutes are a bit of a drag at rush hour.
The Raleigh metro area covers about 50 square miles from Fuqua Varina, to Garner, to Apex, to Cary, to Knightdale and as others have mentioned, the cost of home ownership varies widely according to where you choose.
Living "in Raleigh" can mean living inside the beltline (basically inside I-440) and you can pay a lot of money for not much house just because of where you are. It's very convenient and a lot of people are willing to pay a premium to be there. Especially if you work downtown or at NC State. The downtown condo market has been booming the last 5-6 years and people who love city life from a high rise find it a great choice.
IMHO, North Raleigh is not actually Raleigh in the strictest sense. It's a long way from North Raleigh into the city if you need to go. If you like it up in North Raleigh, you might also consider Wake Forest.
Cary and Apex are, in fact, highly desirable in spite of what some people say. In fact Apex was selected the best "small town" in the entire country recently by (I think) Forbes Magazine. We live in Apex and we love it!! The cost of housing there is relatively high though and it's really growing.
Garner, Fuqua-Varina, Holly Springs, etc are very nice places, but they are all growing rapidly. The entire area is growing very very fast and what is small, and laid back today will be inundated in a few years.
Another nice area to consider is Pittsboro just over the Chatham County line.

That section of 440 should have been addressed 15 years ago. Better late than never, but you're right, the job is going to cause major headaches for a couple of years for anyone who has to commute that way.
We lived through the big US-1/64 widening when we first got up here. It was worth it in the long run, but wow ... while it was going on, I was driving that stretch every morning and afternoon.

I'll weigh in again to second what other Triangle posters are saying...keep your commute in mind when deciding where to live. My commute is only seven miles and it still sucks. I've actually adjusted my working hours to try to avoid the worst of it.
Oh, and you'll learn to hate NC State fans REAL quick.

I just bought a house right outside of downtown in a great neighborhood off of lake wheeler. A lot of young professionals mixed with older people. It's a great neighborhood, and a $5 cab ride to downtown. Also, property value is about to go up a lot in that area. Like any neighborhood close to downtown, there are some sketchy areas that are kind of close, but it is pretty much contained in that area. It is very close to cary and garner as well. I grew up in North Raleigh, but like the area i live now way better.
Also, State fans are the worst

We have lived in Apex for 3 years and Holly Springs for 4 years. Places for young pros: north hills, parts of Cary, near downtown.
Places for young families: Apex, Parts of Cary, Holly Springs.
I have a buddy who's a great realtor if you want any other info. Holly Springs is blowing up right now, Apex blew up the last 10 years. I think you get more bang for your buck in SW Wake County, but if you don't want a yard, go to Cary or Raleigh. Great place to live either way.

If you want quiet small town living with a commute check out Sanford. My brother-in-law lives there and his family loves it. The commute is about forty-five minutes to Raleigh proper.
Central North Carolina does have a fair number of Clemson supporters living there. The three local universities compete for headlines so Clemson is an afterthought unless we are dominating.
Go Tigers!

Traffic is only bad up to 55, then it 70mph most of the way to Sanford. So the commute isn't awful, but I love my 5min commute to downtown.

I like Apex, but Holly Springs is an up-and-coming area. Cary is, to me, overpriced and overcrowded.
If you want a sense of small-town living, check Pittsboro, Fuquay-Varina or Angier. HEck, I'd throwin Lillington, but it's a bit distant.

I live in Apex and love it, but, unfortunately, it was declared by somebody to be the best place to live in America, and we are getting lots of Yankees coming in. It is expensive. I, also, would recommend an area like Fuquay Varina or Holly Springs, up and coming areas that are nice places to live and a little less expensive. Not sure I know of anywhere around here you can get a house for $100,000 without going some out into the country or living in an area that is unsafe. Agree with the negative comments about Cary, Yankee haven. Best of luck!!

If I lived in Holly Springs or Fuqua and worked in RTP, I would consider it a totally necessary investment.
It cuts very near (but, not too near) our neighborhood in Apex, and I think it will raise property values for house hunters working in The Park.

That's me, I live in HS but work in RTP. On my 9-5 days I have to use 540 both ways. On my 11-7 or 12-8 days I can take US1 to 40 and it literally is the same amount of time in the car had I had used 540. You are right though, when there is heavy traffic 540 is well worth the cost! My hope is once the fortify 40 is finished, the traffic will improve enough to allow me to use it more...

Interesting that you mention the station in Fuquay. It was WAKS 1460 AM my family owned it. My dad bought it in '71 then sold it in '87 and they moved the license to Cary I think.
If you listened to Clemson games on our station back then, odds are you heard me during the commercials breaks.
