Mount Magazine State Park, Arkansas.

Dec 30, 2021, 8:04 PM

I hope this is the right forum. If not, I'm sorry.

Wife and I are thinking about taking a vacation in a few months and maybe spend a couple of days in Branson. Wondering if anybody here knows anything about this state park. (Or any other state park in Arkansas or Southern Mizzou.) We are thinking about spending 3 or 4 days there.

It’s a beautiful and underrated area.
There’s a Facebook group called Love My Ozarks that you could get some ideas from

Our "vacation of choice" is visiting National Parks. Went to the Badlands last September. Been to all the "major" national parks in America, from Acadia to Zion. I love to take day hikes in the parks. I could bore you for hours talking about hiking in Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Yellowstone, Yosemite, all the parks in Utah, Grand Canyon, etc. Heck, we spent 3 days in Death Valley and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We really aren't that interested in Branson, might not even go. Just thinking about doing a driving tour and hitting state parks in Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Have you been to Branson? I didn’t care for it. We lived in Fayetteville for a while. You could always drive by UofA, if you haven’t seen it before.

You should visit Bentonville for the American museum of art and the Walmart museum (get ice cream sundae while you’re there for a couple of bucks).

It's pretty. More like one of the SC Mountains or high

foothills than the bigger NC peaks, but beautiful nonetheless.

I actually live relatively close. Depends on want you want.

Petit Jean State Park is my favorite as far as trails, waterfall etc. but my wife and I stayed at the Mt Magazine lodging once for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed it for lodging and our meal. Not as much for trails though there are some. I grew up in the Carolinas but my wife is from just a few miles away from Petit Jean. They went to Branson for their quick getaways. It depends again what you are into. It is touristy but there are some fun things to do there. Most of the shows are cheesy and outdated. A lot of the attractions are the same or similar to Gatlinburg. But the sight and sound theater is nice if you are into Christian play stuff. Most of the other show are cheesy. There is a Dolly Parton Stampede show. It’s worth going to once. Silver Dollar City is a neat little amusement park if you’re into that. I don’t know your ages or anything. But anyways let me know if you have questions.

Thanks. I was looking at Petit Jean as a possibility as well. We may consider spending three days at each park. Very preliminary planning now. We like being away from people. Wife likes to take shorter hikes than me, but anything 3 miles or so is fine for her. I usually get up earlier than her and take a longer/more difficult trail. I've hiked 10-12 miles, day hikes, in the Glacier and Yosemite - with up to 3000 feet in elevation change. I doubt any of the trails in Arkansas will be out of my difficulty range. I play golf and fish, but I can do plenty of that at home. Don't take any of that stuff with me.

We're both in our early 70s.

Thanks for the information. It is a big help.

Then definitely recommend you stop at Petit Jean.

The waterfall does vary with the weather, wet vs dry. But I think it’s about 3 miles round trip. Worth the hike. I’d say moderate at most. Sounds like easy for you. There are a couple of longer ones and a couple of shorter ones too. There are a lot of parks around Arkansas. I’m not as familiar. Arkansas catches alot of crap but it really is a beautiful state. Hear you about the fishing but as one mentioned above there is some good trout fishing as well.

Thanks again. Plans are still very tentative. We might spend 4 or 5 days in Petit Jean and take to day trip to Mount Magazine one of those days.

Hmmm. The board says I have six responses, but I can only see two. Posting this just to see if that fixes the problem.

That is a beautiful area out there. I was out there last year in the spring. Hot Springs and Fayetteville Arkansas are gorgeous. I highly recommend trout fishing the White river, if you’re a fisherman.
