most surprising teams this weekend?

Sep 6, 2015, 2:17 PM

My two are both from the state of Texas...

I thought TAMU was impressive. Their defense is improved, and they've got a couple of freshmen who are gamers. They could really give some teams in the West (Bama and AU) problems.

The other was how bad Texas was. I didn't expect them to beat ND... but they didn't look very good at all. Maybe it's just part of what Strong is dealing with, and he still has to go backwards before going forward... but I really thought they would look better than they did.

Lousy talent, can't pass the ball worth a ####, Coach is clueless, play calling bad (esp. the first two series one pass and that on third down), etc. Can't believe how far they've fallen.

I was impressed with Northwestern.

Also shocked Arizona State didn't put up much of a fight.

There's something in these hills.

A&M was impressive, SMU was impressive in their first game under Chad Morris, and I thought Minnesota was impressive as well.

aTm's defensive improvements were very impressive...

Sep 6, 2015, 3:19 PM

They look like a scary good team. Also, Ole Miss seems to have found a good qb in Swag Kelly. Both of those teams may be better than I initially thought.

I was surprised at how bad Tennessee was on defense, allowing Bowling Green to hang tight for a while. It seems the hype was a little undeserved.

I was pleasantly surprised at Clemson's defensive dominance from the outset. I thought we would have a little more difficult time adjusting to Wofford's game, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. Our defense set the tone early and Wofford had to adjust to our defense.

I was also pleasantly surprised at our offensive line play. We blew them off the ball and effectively ran at will. I hope this will hold up against stiffer competition, but we look like a playoff team right now.

I am not sold on Swag.

I think he's physically tough, athletic, and uber-competitive. I think he's got a strong if not overly consistent arm. He can throw a beautiful ball, at times. He can also throw some ill-advised lame ducks.

I question how well he will do when the pressure gets to him and he has to squeeze the ball through small windows, and how well he will handle things when the red haze descends. Managing his emotions and keeping his composure is not his forte. I think there are going to be games when he puts the team on his back and scores TD's for fun. I also think there will be more than a few games when he spontaneously combusts and vents all over teammates, coaches, and completely loses his cool. I question his ability to read a defense, especially when he's in a tizzy, and I question his decision-making. On and off the field.

I think Kelly's a pumped-up version of Stephen Garcia, I think he's got major entitlement issues, and I thought that when he was at Clemson. Nothing he's done since then has really made me question that opinion. We'll see how it goes, but to be honest I was sort of dreading the roller-coaster we would be on now if Deshaun Watson hadn't come along.

I think Swag's going to have an...interesting year, in the SEC West. Bring popcorn.

Mighty Temple, baby!!!

Took Penn State behind the woodshed! Enjoyed that game immensely. Seeing James Franklin frustrated is so much fun.

Oregon. Dogfight with Eastern Wash (who just lost to Oregon their best QB in school history

Sep 6, 2015, 6:44 PM

Also in the way of another great Oregon year, stands WSU, a pac12 intra-divisional powerhouse who dropped their opener to an FCS team, and not even a good one.

ASU & and AZ exploited as hyped up frauds, for which it feels like I've had to wait far too long for.

Stanford's a juggernaut.

USC/UCLA/Oregon will have unquestionably earnee their spot in this playoff, whomever it is to come out alive or even just 1 loss.

UofL not being a top 25 team is borderline criminal. Them and GT have no business not being higher ranked coming into this season.

Did the experts not know UGA's entire secondary, I mean UL's secondary are done waiting their turn to play? Or that UL picked up hella jucos and a former big12 D poy?

Texas will beat one of Baylor or TCU, and heirarchy of cfb teams will then be better put into perspective.

Also surprised sc jr beat carolina. I think all bets calling for carolina NOT to cover the spread are safe moving forward this season.

Rewatch 2nd int with carolina in FG range and threatening to make it a 1 pt game.

Without reading other responses, I do agree with the 2 Texas schools. Although, I think the surprise of the day was Northwestern /Stanford.

I made a bet with a coot buddy that Temple would win more games than the chickens, so I'm sold on the Owls already.

I thought TCU was underwhelming as well considering who they return.

And our Ole buddy chad morris looked good considering Baylor beat them 45-0 last year. That SMU team wasn't even competitive a year ago.
