MLB just adopted new home plate collision rules.

On an "experimental" basis for 2014.

Catchers cannot block the plate if they do not have the ball. If they do, the runner is safe.

Runners cannot leave the direct basepath to initiate a collision with the catcher. If they do, they are out.


This is a good step, IMO. I'd like to see these big collisions out of the game.

I would say most collisions could have just been slides

typically it was a base runner who was headhunting. Occasionally the catcher would be setup so the plate was inaccessible.

Seems like a totally legit rule change

See obstruction.
See "running out of the baseline".
