Mississippi bans "veggie burgers"

Jul 7, 2019, 7:02 AM

This week, a new law went into effect in Mississippi. The state now bans plant-based meat providers from using labels like “veggie burger” or “vegan hot dog” on their products. Such labels are potentially punishable with jail time.

I have only had the plural, cheese.

This is akin to eating grits and not a grit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Mississippi bans "veggie burgers"

Jul 7, 2019, 3:11 PM

As far as I know, beef has no intrinsic relationship to burgers. And typically "hamburgers" are not made out of ground ham. So why shouldn't you able to use ground turkey, ground chicken, or a ground vegetable
product in making a hamburger and still call it a hamburger?? Stupidity will always be with us, but at least our "Rebel" friends make us look like candidates for the Pulitzer Prize.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

a hamburger is most definitely beef

Jul 7, 2019, 3:22 PM

Do you ask what the hamburger is made out of before you buy it? A burger is short for hamburger. If you order a burger and fries do you ask what the burger is made out of?

I have no problem with calling something a veggie burger though. Everyone knows that is a fake burger and will taste like ####.

Re: Now, ban the so-called soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk!

Jul 8, 2019, 1:14 PM

That has already been decided in court. They can use the term "milk". Non-issue, move on.

FYI "food" and especially beverages can be labeled by their "defining flavor" not their ingredients. That is why some things are claim to be pomegranate or other "fancy juice" but are really mostly grape or pear juice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not true, still being debated by FDA. European Union has

Re: Mississippi bans "veggie burgers"

Jul 8, 2019, 12:19 PM

Congrats Mississippi, way to waste tax-payer money on frivolous laws and lawyer fees.

It isn't like the concept of "burger" was not ambiguous slang before hand... or are the hog farmers going to sue the cattle farmer over the term "hamburger" because there is no pork... or worse "long pork" as it does not contain meat made from the citizens of Hamburg. Are "Cheeseburgers" made exclusively from cheese or do dairy farmers need to get into suit. Finally, it isn't like other ingredients don't also modify the term "burger" like turkey burger, chicken burger, rice burger (japan), steak burger.

However, if vegan burgers are made out of actual vegans, would that work too.

Re: Mississippi bans "veggie burgers"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't blame them a bit for going after "vegan" burgers!

Jul 8, 2019, 8:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Mississippi bans "veggie burgers" ]

And I don't have a problem with turkey, chicken or pork burgers, because they are all meat. But, by definition, "vegan" means "no meat", thus "no burger"!

Burgers should contain meat, ice cream should contain milk, and milk should contain milk, not some fruit or vegetable extract!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't blame them a bit for going after "vegan" burgers!

Jul 9, 2019, 7:39 AM

A "burger" also noted as "berger" "burg" or "bourgh" is either a person that lives in a city or enclosed walled area... like Spartanburg. Yum, spartanburger....

Anyway "burger" is a style to cook, not an ingredient. The term originated from a meatball or sausage served "hamburg style" The ingredient is dependent on the prefix as to denote the ingredient from a cooked minced patty. So a bison burger, kangaroo, chicken etc. Thus a veggie burger is more than appropriate. There is nothing wrong about use of the term.

Side note, my wife and daughter both have lactose sensitivities. Irony is that my wife grew up the daughter of a cattle farmer. Soy milk is in our fridge along with cow milk. It is milk and used as milk.

Finally, my family has been a peanut and soybean farmers for generations (back when they were 1920s hippies refusing to grow tobacco). This is absurd that one farmer wants to spite another.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Frack'em... Take it to the Feds... Absolute cultish idiocy.***

Jul 8, 2019, 8:00 PM

And by the way, exactly what is meant by "meatless meat"...? Is there a comprehension problem here?
