Miami at ACC Kickoff

Jul 21, 2022, 11:17 AM

Spent time with The U, Miami, at the ACC Kickoff this morning. In-person, Mario Cristobal is impressive. Very sharp and business-like. You can tell he's coached under Saban. And he said that the turnover chain is gone, saying, "It's just not a part of our culture. There are other things that have more to do with winning football games than a chain."

Also, the players are excited about heading to Texas A&M to play a night game in week three. They are all excited about playing at Clemson late in the season. And they all said they will be back in Charlotte for the ACC Championship.

The schedule is tough, so they can really improve and still lose four or five. But you can tell the difference Cristobal has made.

"We quit doing that because I think it's dumb as hail."

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Member that acc championship game

When KB was quarterback and our guys were mocking the chain? Pretending to put chains on each other after plays and just destroying that team? Very sad

Some quotable statements from Mario Cristobal:

Cristobal on Clemson and Dabo Swinney's program there: "I saw it up close while I was at Alabama. Two games, very tight games with a win for Alabama and one for Clemson. He's (Dabo Swinney) built a great program and has set a very high standard for the program and the conference and he's done a great job in both of them."

On the ACC, Cristobal again recalled the 2015 and 2016 title games while he was at Alabama and how impressed he was with the Tigers. "We've always felt the ACC is a very strong conference. And it's our job as coaches to continue to elevate the standard of football."

On what Dan Radakovich brings to Miami: "He did it firsthand (helping support the football success at Clemson). Having that kind of experience is invaluable. He's an exceptional human being and a hard worker. He knows the lay of the land for the conference and the national landscape as well. His experience. His know-how and the opportunity to help create are invaluable."

On the Miami brand and what happens when it's trending up: "Everyone recognizes when Miami is on, there's not anything like it -- I'm not saying that we're there or proclaiming anything. I think we know when it is going a certain way, that it's like nothing else out there. We have to get a place to work our way. Not proclaim our way. Not tweet our way. Not hashtag our way. Not T-shirt our way. But to work our way there step by step and then have a university and a city that's just ascending at an unbelievable rate..."

A couple of things on that. The chain is TOTALLY a "DA U" thing, and really the only school it worked for as they started it and that level of swagger + gold Cuban links = DA U. But getting rid of it is never bad. That said Mario will win and win big there. Dude has coaching chops and will get a HUGE bag from Uncle Luke and all the Nevin Shapiro folks. I truly think they and USC under Riley are going to build something too big to fail.

He’s a good guy and coach. Hated to see him go there, knowing he would greatly improve their program.
