Met Dwight Clark in 1978 a week b/4 my attending big away Maryland game, and

Apr 20, 2018, 9:15 AM

He was getting over a long healing shoulder injury & told me he’d be playing in big Md game following week.

He was with future Ms Universe, then student Shawn Weatherly, and we three were in line at the ice cream bar in P & A Bldg..and as i went outside to leave with my milk shake they were sitted on a concrete wall eating their creame and we chatted some more since he was from Charlotte too.

Bostic was right in that Dwight caught a long pass & “hauled asss” for the end zone to put Tigers in lead for 1st time..and Clemson held on in a shoot out to win..and win the ACC that day. Dwight was rangy tall but still had to go up for the ball but came down & turned for the goal in one quick fluid motion I remember & took off in high gear with two fast Md DB’s in hot pursuit for the last 35 yds!

I waved the cotton 3’ x 5’ Flag I’d bought back in 1977, on a 2-piece metal pole for added height, that was Orange with large White PAW all during that game and old vintage film shows it being waved from the large Clemson crowd during the game which makes me smile.

Later, after going down on the field to celebrate, my wife & i flew back to G’ville airport and were surprised to see & hear a thousand Clemson fans it seemed chanting ACC, ACC, ACC..and were there spontaneously to welcome the team since it had been about 10 years since winning the ACC which had been ours until Maryland & UNC had taken it over too often.

What a special day & win!

I retired that old, muddied, torn & even blood-stained (occurred at 1979 away Notre Dame game) PAW Flag in 1992 but not until we had won a ton more games & bowls due to the heroics & hard play from that special day of the Bostic Brothers, Clark, Brown, Butler & TiGER Team.

Go TiGERS!

Great story. I listened to that game on the radio and will never forget Jim Phillips call of the Clark and Butler touchdowns by saying, "he's off to the races!" Great day for Clemson football.

Think I sat beside you at that game......

Was only 7 and with my dad and uncle. I remember being in mid-part of section and unless someone else had a flag (it was orange with white paw), it was you who offered to let me try to wave it. For some reason, I remember not being able to wave it well. What a great game and I remember how Clark, Brown, etc...would dance in the end zone after TDs. Also remember seeing the "M" in the far end zone after the game.

I was at the MD game as a 15 year old. I just remember being cold all day with the wind cutting through the old aluminum bleachers. It was a back and forth game, but I remember Dwight Clark's catch and one other - I think it was Stan Rome over the middle. Was the best Clemson game I ever saw until my Freshman year in '81.

Re: 1978 Maryland game- I've said many times

this is still the best college game I've attended and maybe that I've seen. It had everything by both teams. Md, Steve Adkins, I think, had a 96 yard td run. Back and forth all day

I still have my ticket in my wallet from that game

Will never forget it

Sat in the wooden bleachers in our 'scoring' end zone.

Great game. I spoke about it with Dwight years later on the hill between #14 fairway and #13 green at The Masters. My son was wearing my red wool w/gold leather sleeves SF 49ers "varsity" jacket and he came over with his son to ask about it. Real nice guy. I spoke with Ronnie Lott later that same day.

My Dwight Clark Story

Apr 20, 2018, 7:02 PM

I remember the 1977 Duke game that we won 17-11 on the road. Keep in mind this is the first year of the reemergence, so to leave that stadium with a 5-1 record was really big. Also, at that time, wins over Duke were not taken for granted. After the game, my dad, his friend, his friend's daughter, age 9, and myself, age 14, were walking across Duke's field. It wasn't a swarm the field situation. We were just taking the most direct path to our car. The field was almost empty and I'm not sure how we walked down because I think their walls are high. There must have been stairs. Anyway, we're walking across, very happy with the win, and preparing to drive back home. My dad looks over and says, Hey Dwight, do you mind coming over here and taking a picture with these kids. Clark turned on a dime and ran about 25 yards over to us, grinning all the way. He posed for the picture as my dad congratulated him on the team's performance. Clark thanked us very sincerely for being there on the road to support the Tigers. As a side note thhe young girl and I both ended up graduating from Clemson.

Another time, I think this was in 1978, or winter 1979. Clemson players came to my school to play a basketball game as a fundraiser for our high school. I can't imagine anything like this happening today. We lived in the low country so the chance to see Clemson Tigers in person was huge. We went into the gym and watched the game. Clark was one of the players that came. The players' girlfriends were sitting together. Of course we all went over and were talking. These girls were about 20 or 21 and we were 15. Shawn Weatherly was there and this was before she had won Miss Universe, or Miss South Carolina. From her later pictures, she is obviously pretty as she was a deserving Miss Universe. But I have to say this about Weatherly. Her pictures never did her justice. In person, she was completely stunning and hands down the best looking female I had ever seen. We didn't know her from Adam that day in the gym, but it was obvious to all of us that she was in a league of her own.

My dad picked us up from the event when it was over and I remember we were telling my dad, at that time 38, about the players and their girlfriends. Every high school has a prettiest girl and ours was the head cheerleader, homecoming queen, the whole works. I remember asking my dad if he could believe that Dwight Clark had a girlfriend that looked better than this girl in my school. He answered that question very quickly and with a lot of certainty that, yes he would easily believe that.

I saw Weatherly again in the Clemson press box during the 1983 homecoming game vs Virginia. Though I was a writer for The Tiger, it was rare that I sat in the press box. Usually the sports editor sat there and I preferred to sit in the student section. But that day I did sit in the box. Weatherly was visiting, made an appearance on the field and came through the press box. She was in the press box for quire some time. By this time it had been three years since she had won Miss Universe and there had been many beautiful pictures of her in magazines and newspapers. However, when I saw here in 1983, I had the same thought of, wow this woman's pictures just do not do her justice. In person, she was amazing looking.

Clark was lucky you weren't in school and still single LBB

The story might have ended with you leaving with Shawn Weatherly and Dwight leaving with the milkshake. He should thank his lucky stars.
