Memorial Day

13

May 29, 2023, 7:59 AM

This is a thread to list the names of our fellow soldiers that were true hero’s. Family members of true hero’s please tell us a little about them as well. We cannot thank you and your family enough for the ultimate sacrifice that your loved one made. Our freedom comes at the greatest of costs and no one knows that better than you. Thank you.

SFC Clarence (Pete) Peterson. KIA Korea. He also served in WWII, and was captured in the Ardennes, spending the rest of that war in German captivity.

He was my mother’s first husband. He fathered my oldest brother and two sisters. My father, a member of his platoon, accompanied his body back to the US, where he was interred at Arlington. My mother and father married upon my father’s return from Korea.

It is an extremely conflicting emotion when I think of his service and ultimate sacrifice.

My father's brother, Dean, an uncle I never met, died on Normandy Beach on D-Day. Too many Vietnam comrades to list.

WO1 John Hiebert. He was not a blood relative, but he was my brother in arms. He was a member of my flight school class and was in my unit in Vietnam, the 114th Aslt. Helicopter Co. He died 2DEC71 in Kien Giang Province.

Funny story he used to tell; he hated his Army issued M16 rifle. Said the thing would constantly jam up and was good for one shot at a time. Told us that he lost it in a firefight in some jungle and the only thing they had to replace it with was a pump-action shotgun. He said that was the first time he ever had a weapon he could actually use with confidence.

Many stories he would not talk about even to my father who is also a Vietnam Vet. I can only imagine the things he saw and endured.

Thanks to all the Vietnam Vets out there. You lost your innocence in some jungle in SE Asia and came home to a country that basically hated you or at the least, did not celebrate your sacrifices. Thank God we have learned to honor your sacrifices and remember those who never came home.

RIP to those who lost their lives in VNam.

How do you keep Gamecocks out of your yard?
• Put up goal posts
What does a Gamecock grad call a Clemson Tiger grad in 2 years?
