Me and the Caronavirus

I'm not here shaking in my boots re the virus. It's hard to determine fact from fiction from what all has been said. I'm in that age bracket where there is more concern for my welfare should I become infected. A serious outbreak would place our hospitals and medical services and personnel in a position where they would be forced to determine who receives proper treatment. I would definitely be in that group considered to be too old to keep around for another century. That part does not bother me. What bothers me is our attitude of not going all out to PREVENT a situation that would result in a "worse case" situation. If we were to reach that stage, I would venture to say very few families would escape some close encounters with a death in their immediate family.

What do you think needs to be done to prevent the worst case scenario?

seriously, what can be done? It's the flu. Do what you should be doing to prevent flu. There will NOT be a cure, there will not be an effective anti-viral. The media hyped it up and now everyone has to overreact or they get crucified!
It's the new USA, hypersensitive and hypercritical.

That’s a great question . It’s comforting to me to know that with all the medical minds and great medical facilities in this country that a solution should be found. Hopefully the communication is in place to allow these great minds to work as one. That is the part that concerns me. Many years ago my beloved wife was in Duke Hospital being treated for liver cancer. Her success was not very good and I asked her doctor if there was another hospital where I might take her for other treatments. His reply was .. No, we are a research hospital and anything new we learn about immediately. I learned many years later that that is not a true statement.. iF a research hospital discovers a positive potential cure they purposely keep that information to themselves so that they get ALL the research money for themselves. Ain’t America great. It should not be that way in regards to medical treatments especially.

My main frustration is the lack of testing

There seems to be a high bar set for who can be tested, but why? Do we not have enough available to check on all those who consider themselves to be at risk?

You ask a good question. It is my understanding that this drive to keep large crowds under control is to lessen the numbers who become infected to quickly and create a drain on the medical facilities.

I’m right there with you Joe. Not age wise but my health is seriously compromised right now and I would immediately fall into the category of limited intervention. I hope everyone is taking precautions

Joe, not as senior as you but not far behind. I was hospitalized over the weekend with heart and lung issues so I definitely fall into the "too old to do anything" category. As I was being discharged I found out my pulmonary doctor was treating a coronavirus patient in the hospital I was end. I had a lot of questions and was assured I wasn't in danger as the patient was isolated in another part of the hospital. Just left my primary doctor and he said I was doing good and not in danger. When I left the doctor they had a drive thru set up for the covid19. Getting scary but I am not one to go absolutely crazy over it.

I do not feel personally threatened, but my fear is in the numbers. The mildness of symptoms and the persistence of contagion means that many, many people may get and spread this. I am worried that even if the mortality rate ends up at 1 or 2 %, that the large numbers of infected might lead to a very significant number of deaths.

Curious to know what we as a nation could do that is not being done? It seems some drastic measures are being taken unlike anything we have experienced ever before. Please keep in mind the numbers of people who die every year from the seasonal flu in this country alone dwarfs what we have seen in any country with Covid-19 to date. We are talking 20-60,000 people dying from the flu in the US every year. And I’d like a show of hands of how many people who are now so afraid of Covid-19 actually got the flu shot, which is a far greater killer at this point? As a medical professional I can tell you the answer is plenty. The hype surrounding this virus is mind boggling given the fact we had a swine flu pandemic that killed 13,000 people in the US and nothing on this scale of media attention came close. Please pay attention to the facts and not the hysteria. Practice common sense measures. If you get it, chances are greatest you will get over it just fine. For those of us in the high risk category, just stay smart and be at peace.

I know everyone wants answers but the questions have just been presented to medical professionals and scientists This virus is new and we were dependent totally on China’s information now we have started developing our own vaccines and treatments The travel band gave us time but others folks coming from other countries brought it here. We have found a lot of good things out about the virus but have also found enough to scare the crap out you. It has very similar properties to SARS and it died out pretty much on its own. The worst thing they have found is huge transmission rates. Thus the end of large gatherings. Keep hydrated and get plenty of sleep. A little vitamin c and zinc will help you fight it off. All of the closings are to protect folks like you. I don’t post a lot but want you to take every precaution to prevent infection TigerNet is full of a bunch of turkeys these days and I really enjoy your post.
