Maybe we are purposefully keeping things vanilla

Sep 19, 2022, 9:53 AM

against these easier opponents, but after reading all of the articles about Goodwin having a photographic memory and being able to recognize coverages and tendencies pre-snap last season, I admit that I was expecting to see more from him and our defense so far.

I agree with you. We keep hearing the other team did something we were not expecting. That is what a good coach does. Everyone knows we will not throw in the middle of the field. Why put a defender there? What good is a good memory if you can't use it.

I'm old and my memory is faulty but aren't the complaints about vanilla play calling, slow starts and not putting patsies away something we heard in 2016 and every season since?

If that's so, and I think it is, I think I'm gonna relax a little and let it play out. (Note: that doesn't mean that I won't absolutely die every single time a pass is off target or dropped, a drive stalls or we give up an easy pass across the middle for a long gain... sigh.)

Re: Maybe we are purposefully keeping things vanilla

Sep 19, 2022, 10:13 AM

In 2016, the complaint was that players who had proven to be productive the previous year were not performing up to their potential.

The current players have not yet proven to be productive. That leaves open the question of whether the current players are underperforming, or if this is just the best they can do.

In fairness, we had 6 defensive starters out on Saturday...

Sep 19, 2022, 10:26 AM

and, as is usually the case, there is a drop-off, at least from an experience standpoint, from the first team to the back-ups.

But I thought we were stacked/loaded on defense.

Sep 19, 2022, 10:47 AM

We have backups who are NFL caliber talents, right?

Plus, we haven't exactly played top teams this year.

Shouldn't our backups be able to outperform starters for the likes of Furman and Louisiana Tech?

We do on the defensive line. Why do you constantly cherry pick information? Disingenuous at best. We played multiple freshmen at the same in the game Saturday. They will be better for it as will the team as the season progresses.

Sep 19, 2022, 12:21 PM [ in reply to Re: But I thought we were stacked/loaded on defense. ]

We recruit nationally, and are usually in the top 5-10 in recruiting rankings. The players we have at each level of our defense is far superior in talent to the players on the other three teams we have played this year.

Of course younger players will make mistakes, and we can live with that in order to develop depth. But surely you can see that even our starters and key reserves haven't exactly been impressive so far this year.

The fact that you and others use blanket statements and generalizations to excuse our play so far is the epitome of cherry-picking. Last time I checked, we didn't start a team full of true freshmen or inexperienced backups.

Sep 19, 2022, 12:13 PM [ in reply to Yeah your right but all of the Weslicheck stories had ]

…this week with WF’s “mesh” offense.

Last year BV handled the “mesh” with effectively the same defense that Goodwin has, less Bresee, but with a “better” Mukuba (hoping he is 100% by Saturday).

If the defense gets their a55 handed to them in Winston this Saturday, “Weslichick” will have a lot of explaining to do.

Yes, this. If we are still complaining about vanilla approaches after Saturday, then we nay have to face it that the team can't handle a more in depth scheme.

Be ready for the following excuses here:

-We have had some players injured
-Emotional couple of weeks with Ella Bresee situation
-Wes is new and learning his way around as a defensive coordinator
