What's the deal with our football field.

May 15, 2021, 8:27 PM

shouldn't we have a direct line connected to a pump at Lake Hartwell to water the field year round.

The field has not looked good for years especially late in the season. It might be time for field turf

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Blasphemy. I’m pretty sure we still have a turf grass

Looks like it’s been aerated/punched. Common occurrence this time of year to stimulate root growth. Please, never go to a turf field at a school with a turf grass major.

Very common for football field to look this way early

May 16, 2021, 4:28 PM

in summer as the Bermuda greens in with the summer heat. We have always used a blend of Bermuda and rye to keep field green during season. Bermuda dies off during season due to temps at night in our region. What you see dying now is the rye grass that allows it took look green for Oct and Nov games. This also happens at many PGA Tourney course this time of year. They use rye to make them green for army Spring tournies on TV. I cahallenge you to find photos of Augusta National fairways right now. I promise they look similar.

You are mostly correct. Bermuda grass does always go through a transition period from when it is dormant until it starts to green up. We do not use a "blend" of Ryegrass and Bermudagrass, but rather a Hybrid Bermudagrass turf that may be overseeded with Ryegrass. I am not sure that we still overseed our Bermudagrass in the Fall. We used to, but I think that we may now just paint Bermudagrass, but like many golf courses do with their greens when their UltraDwarf Bermuda or Zoysia goes dormant. Overseeding with Rye is a pain as it has to germinate and get established between games, and if you don't ha an away game or two, then it is hard to grow in with teams playing on it. Someone can ask Mike Echols if we are still overseeding or painting.

I think what you are seeing is the Bermudagrass starting to green up. There is zero reason for there to be any Ryegrass on the field now. Even the golf courses you referenced do not let the Ryegrass hang on, as it competes with the Bermudagrass. A few golf courses do and usually pay the price later in the summer when it has severely retarded the Bermuda base. If we overseeded our field, we should have sprayed out the Ryegrass long ago so the Bermuda can start growing.

Mike does a great job and I have zero concern out out playing surface. You want your grass to look nice for TV, but you are playing on dense turf, not "color".
