Maryland announcement to Big Ten could come as early as

Nov 18, 2012, 10:51 AM

Monday. This is very bad news. We lose the Maryland and D.C. market, we lose contiguousness of our conference, and most importantly there is nobody decent to replace them with. What could have made this a win for the ACC is if the ACC had asked West Virginia to join. The contiguousness would have remained and we actually would have had a better program than Maryland.

This is not good at all. The BigTen coming in and getting Maryland and Rutgers severs the ACC footprint at that point.

ANd don't suggest Louisville as a replacement. I am tired of getting schools like Miami, Pittsburgh and Louisville, city-named schools. And Louisville would not be contiguous at all.

Any thoughts on a replacement team?

How do you feel about town-named schools?***

Names like Clemson and Auburn are different. People know

those are college towns. Auburn is actually named after a town, but Clemson is named after a person. The town of Clemson was actually called Fort Hill, South Carolina for over 50 years after the school was founded.

I think oit is great and there is no DCV tv market. It is a pro town. MD cant sell out a 60,00 seat stadium. I'd rather have our share of the $50 million. Get Cincy in and try to get the Ohio tv market

Dosen't matter if they can sell to a pro market. BC's area is a NFL area too, but having that TV market is huge.

to be contiguousness on the Atlantic.... the ACC needs

Nov 18, 2012, 11:06 AM

Delaware and New Jersey. Pennsylvania (Pitt) ain't on the Atlantic Seaboard. but the real blow won't be losing the MD & DC market, but letting in the Big 10, which has a bigger share of PA and will be getting boost in NJ/NY w/ Rutgers if they join.

it will be hard to make up w/ a team from the midwest like Cinci or Louisville (& which the Tobacco Rd schools will never support).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are a contiguous conference now. See the map. It doesn't

Nov 18, 2012, 11:10 AM

matter that New Jersey and Delaware are not included as long as the states we have are contiguous, and they are. Tehy will not be whern Maryland leaves. There is no rule and nobody ever said the ACC had to be only states on the Atlantic coast. See Pacific Twelve Conference, they have had Arizona for decades and now have Utah and Colorado.

If we had West Virginia, the contigousness problem of losing Maryland would be solved, but that ship has sailed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simple solution would be to replace them with Navy.

Nov 18, 2012, 11:08 AM

I'd like that better, anyway.

I think that is the best option (pardon the pun) too. That

Nov 18, 2012, 11:15 AM

would also be good for Notre Dame and possibility of future membership.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Navy. interesting thought.

Nov 18, 2012, 12:53 PM

Maintain presence in the area- though probably no better draw than Terps in regards to tv draw ( foosball-wise).

Prestigious school but not an upgrade in the big ticket sports and wouldnt increase perception of ACC for foosball. uCONN I would prefer over UL.

Before the UM bombshell I thought Rutgers would be the final piece of the ACC. In part because of decent athletics but more so because of the www.aau.edu membership.

I think UCONN will be it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Navy would be a great fit and would add a greater sense

of identity and prestige to the league. Then collect Penn State along with Notre Dame as a full member and we're set at 16. The B1G could add UConn to fill PSU's spot. Take MD's buyout money and use it for Navy and the Big East. It'd be great to have a military school as part of the league going forward.

I think The DC market cares about MD football about as much

Nov 18, 2012, 11:08 AM

As the NY/NJ market cares about Rutgers football -- which is to say not much.

I'm curious about the difference in per-team TV money of the Big compared to the ACC. $50 Mil is certainly a lot, but if you can make it back in a few years you could maybe justify the move.

I guess the ACC would go after UConn. Not good for those of us that like football.

Louisville. As long as Charlie Strong and Rick Pitino are there, Louisville will be getting a piece of the money pie. They will be consistently good...top ten good (football will only get better). The DC TV market is useless is nobody wants to watch Maryland football or basketball, which has essentially been the case for the last five years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Maryland announcement to Big Ten could come as early as

Nov 18, 2012, 11:12 AM

My initial reaction is take the money and let them run... And why worry about a replacement?

1. With an odd number of teams, it would make an easier transition for ND to be a full ACC member if that were to happen, even though it's not likely.

2. Maybe without an even number of teams we could get rid of this divisional football system and have the two best teams play for the championship at the end of the season.

3. There aren't any postseason implications as of right now with dropping MD and not replacing them, so there should be no hurry to rush out and add another school just for the sake of adding another school like Pitt and Cuse. If we are going to add another team, they should make the ACC better, not worse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL...Read my lips...Notre Dame will NEVER become a full
