house on July 1. Already have my tickets. I know there are some that do not see the connection between this and Clemson sports. But so many of my favorite memories are interlinked with Clemson. Some involve sports. Some do not. And when we "old geezers" seem to be mired in the past, it is not about the past so much as the journey we are still taking that brought us to wherever we are today and along which we are certainly still savoring so many special moments.
Favorite Clemson Memory Non-Sports Related: The same year Secretariat won the Triple Crown (1973) is the first time I saw MTB. 1973 is also the year I returned to finish my degree after staying out of school a year. They were the warm-up band in November 1973 for somebody I cannot recall. I immediately knew that the wrong band was playing warm-up. Without question, the music played that night in Littlejohn is the best live performance I have ever heard and developed a lifetime love for the Caldwell brothers along with Doug, Jerry, George, and Paul. "Can't You See" and "Take the Highway" have always been on my favorite songs of all time list. Doug is the only one of the originals that I will see in a few weeks. It will be good to hear his voice in person again. And I suspect the new members will hold up their end of the bargain reasonably well including whoever is playing the flute. I remember trying to go to sleep after the concert in November 1973. I was still hearing the flute. And in some way that is difficult to explain, I still hear the flute from Littlejohn each time the two songs mentioned earlier are being played.
Favorite Clemson Sports Memory: Similar to still hearing that flute, each time I walk into Death Valley I feel the same joy as watching Willie Underwood break open a close game against South Carolina in November 1980 which saved Danny Ford’s job. We had entered the game with a 5-5 record and had lost four of the last five. That was also the game that the orange uniforms were worn for the first time. And set the stage for winning the national championship the following year. You could feel something special happening that day. Somewhere I still have the mud stained program I sat on that day in Section GG.
Summary: So 40 years from now will I still remember hearing Andrea Bocelli at the Hollywood Bowl tonight? Maybe. Maybe not.

I think of the early 70's when I was at Clemson. MTB was a great band and I still listen to all of their music often.

There were a lot of great 70s bands. My kids listen to a lot of that music today. I do too.

First album I ever heard was "Searchin' For A Rainbow", and first concert I ever saw was The Marshall Tucker Band here in Charleston back in 1976. I was in Chicago at the National Hardware show in 1997 and the band(led by Doug Gray) was playing at the House of Blues. One of the guys I worked with was from Spartanburg and he knew one of the guitarist now playing with them. After some note passing after the show, we were able to back stage and drink beers with the band. They are still one of my favorite bands.

Saw them a couple of months ago at the Filmore in Charlotte. Doug has pretty much lost his voice and he let's the audience sing a lot of lines, but the rest of the band can bring it. The flute was awesome. It was my first time seeing them live. However, their songs were still popular when I was at clemson in the 90's. I've had them on my bucket list for a while and finally get it checked off.
