man! the NCAA is slick…

Jan 28, 2022, 8:35 AM

Control billion dollar revenue generators with free labor. And when the kids come for money, a quick side step allows them to get paid…..By boosters. Not a dollar of the TV dollars go to NIL. Not a significant dime of the individual institutions dollars go to the players.

A small fraction of kids get paid by a now supercharged booster network. I’d imagine If you’re a second string OL you get nothing significant. Meanwhile the institutions keep their full pie. And desperate booster cough up significant dollars for skill players mostly.

Am I missing something g?

It'll really get interesting when one of these boosters slips in a non-compete clause in their NIL contract.

I was going down the same path but was wondering if they NIL deals would have playing time clauses tying athletes to schools for a certain number of years or weighing reps. I see some taking an chance on a five-start freshmen but if they end up riding pine and filling a special teams slot the ROI isn't that great.

yes you are missing a lot

these kids are getting a chance to go to college for free where as their peers who can't play sports get shafted..

plus many many many other perks..

But lets not talk about what we get.. lets talk about how unfair life is

Yes, you are....... "opportunity cost". The NIL money that is paid by boosters is likely to decrease their available funds and cause an equal decrease in contributions they would otherwise give to the schools for things like IPTAY, facility improvements, endowment funds, etc.

The effect might not be a dollar-for-dollar offset, but I do think it would have an effect. There are only so many pockets in a suit..... :)

Not to mention the boosters who get fed-up with this highest-bidder professional environment of college sports and decides to donate/spend their money elsewhere.

Just wait, unless there are some rules applied to NIL and transfer portal, it will happen.

Yeah I've mentioned this several times on here in the past year...it's freaking genius on their part but it's not really the NCAA, it's the TV companies, conferences, schools and administrators ... these are the people who get to keep all of the money!!!

Plus the schools have no liability with the players...no revenue sharing, nothing...on top of that the scholarships they give out are only one year contracts...no obligation after one year...it's freaking amazing how they get away with it Iah!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

these are true

. these are the people who get to keep all of the money!!!
but.....where does most of that money go? Right back to the athlete.. mostly in perks. The coaches and the admins are the only 1's making bank. So it is really hard to listen to million dollar coaches and AD's talking about how wrong NIL is.

on top of that the scholarships they give out are only one year contracts..

but... you really have to go out of your way to lose your Schollie.. at least at Clemson

As long as boosters have money in the checkbooks, structure payments as legal business expenses, and the kids are smart enough to understand they are liable to pay taxes everything works the way it is supposed to. Once these so called boosters see that they are not a return for their investments, any huge payouts will be reduced. NIL is not about the NCAA and never has been.

The history of the NCAA may provide some insight (not a justification). The NCAA was started by Teddy Roosevelt to help slow deaths in football. Obviously, no helmets gave way to leather helmets then plastics etc. I think the conferences and bigger schools appreciate having them around as a buffer to lawsuits and a figure head they can point to when things go wrong. They could be dissolved and their role assimilated by the conferences and schools but they do help keep lawsuits and the court of public opinion at bay. With the conferences and CFP committee getting more and more responsibilities I wouldn't be surprised to see the NCAA undertake a safety (an important issue) or other campaign to remind fans they still exist. Even if they are carrying water for the elite.
Sorry if this sounds cynical but I was trying to be brief.

to a lesser extent some coordinators, it almost all goes to the benefit of the players and their fellow student athletes via scholarships, facilities, benefits, stipends, elite training, coaching, tutor support, and on and on.... - they would just rather have cash, a fancy car, etc. instead of stuff that really matters. Yet they would want the cash and then expect to still have all that other stuff for free.

I've said this before, when they expand the playoff the players are going to get a cut. It will be too much money for them to just sit back and not go for some of it. The CFP already distribute $475 million annually on average. Triple the size and lets say conservatively its worth a billion a year, you dont think the players are going to go for and get some of that?

Yep...it's just a matter of time until their is a players union and a revenu sharing plan...and then everyone (players, coaches, schools) will still get the endorsement deals also, which is all the NIL is for the players!!!
