Pretty sure definition of compound fracture is

that the bone breaks through the skin. He went to bed that night thinking he only had a bruise?

a compound fracture because cracked in 2 different places.

I googled the definition and the definition that came up said that the bone breaks the skin and that is what I had always thought it meant. But I guess we can't trust the internets.

Maybe it identifies as a compound fracture.

I think it may be a little more "compound-complex" than that. ;)

Your son's doctors were wrong - which, South Carolina has a lot of really bad doctors. A compound fracture has to have damage to the skin or tissue. A multiple fracture is what your son had. Look in any medical dictionary.

clover65 is correct. A compound fracture means the skin is broken from the inside out BY THE FRACTURED BONE. This is inherently more dangerous due to risk of infection. A fracture with 2 or more fragments is called “comminuted”. If the skin is broken AND there are 2 or more fragments it’s known as a “compound comminuted fracture”. There’s angulated & displaced fractures also but I won’t get into that. The kid’s got trouble enough as it is

Yep. Sandals grabbed my attention too. That being said, I hope he has a successful recovery.

Re: LSU QB breaks arm in freak accident.

Even worse is all the people I see on something like a motorcycle or a moped wearing sandals or flip-flops and what’s even harder to imagine is the level of epic stupidity it takes to push a lawnmower in sandals or flip-flops. And I see these type of things all the time.

I have actually seen people mowing a lawn barefoot. I have stopped and said do you have any idea how dangerous that is and explained to them all the #### that can go wrong pushing a lawnmower while barefoot or in something like flip-flops. It’s insanely dangerous and beyond just stupid and a total lack of common sense. I have seen adults doing it and kids. Never ceases to blow my mind when I see it.

Re: LSU QB breaks arm in freak accident.

Aug 8, 2021, 3:18 PM

Lol. How could someone possibly mow over their foot with a lawnmower? You are pushing it 3 feet out in front of you.

And if you somehow managed to accomplish the level of stupidity to mow over your foot, what would the cloth from a shoe do to protect your foot against a lawnmower blade?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know of 2 guys who cut off toes

Aug 8, 2021, 3:25 PM

when they tripped walking backwards and pulled mowers over their feet- but I am old so maybe that can’t happen these days

A perfect example of why every fishing boat should have wire cutters or bolt cutters big enough to cut whatever tackle you’re using.

A lot of bad stuff can happen on a boat if you’re not careful. And it can happen very very fast!

I have never been comfortable fishing with people, especially kids, that aren’t very experienced. I have seen too many people get a hook in them, especially in and around the face, by someone being really careless on a boat. Treble hooks are especially dangerous in the hands of an idiot.

One of the freakiest accidents I’ve ever seen happened to Chris Cullum. Chris graduated from Clemson back in the 1980s with a degree in engineering. If you have ever seen the service trucks around South Carolina for Cullum mechanical that’s his family.

They own a 50 foot Bertram and back in the early 90s they were about 50 or 60 miles offshore trolling and someone caught a big wahoo. As often is the case when you first bring a fish on board that wahoo was flopping around the cockpit uncontrolled. It caught Chris on the back of his leg just above the heel and completely severed his Achilles’ tendon.

They wrapped his foot and ankle in ice and towels and headed back to Charleston as quickly as possible and he had surgery that night to reattach the tendon.

I remember being at the yacht basin in Chas. with my granddaddy back in the late 80’s when a boat came in from offshore and one of the guys on board had a sailfish bill stuck in his gut. They had cut the bill off of the fish. The EMS was waiting for him at the dock, it was a bloody mess and the guy was in shock. Never found out how that turned out.

Also have friend that speared a cobia one time in the head, the fish immediately went belly up. When handing the spear to his Buddy in the boat, the fish woke up and went crazy, the dorsal fin cut him from ear to ear across his forehead, he ended up with 107 stitches.

Growing up living on Lake Wylie me and my friends would always go fishing. So one day when I was about 12 my friend thought it a good idea to walk directly behind me as I was casting. As I reared back and came forward to cast my line I heard the line pop and him scream "dude you just hooked me". I turned around to see the hook about a half an inch under his left eye. The hook went all the way through the skin meaning I could see the point and the barb and that we would have to try and get the barb out twice. Once back through the exit puncture and second through the entry puncture. Needless to say after about an hour we knew a parent would have to be told because we could get the hook out. When you're 12 and you have adrenaline pumping and you almost ripped your best friends eye ball out thinking clearly isn't your greatest skill set. Today I'd would have just cut the barb and point off but back then he had to go to the emergency room to get it taken out which was probably for the best seeing how they could clean it and make sure it didn't get infected. I still think about that today almost 30 years later thinking how close I was to taking his eyeball out.

That’s precisely why a lot of these guys that fish for sharks and billfish carry bolt cutters. That’s the only way you can cut those big steel hooks to get them out.

Actually, fishing is very dangerous if you’re careless or being irresponsible. A lot of stupid #### can happen on a boat real fast!

I find this story a little hard to believe. First, it has always been my understanding that a compound fracture is when the skin is broken. But beyond that, I have broken some bones and there’s a lot more than bruising involved. Intense pain and swelling is also part of the equation. I guess it’s possible, but that would be an extremely atypical situation.

When my son was 9 yrs old he had an accident on his bicycle. He came in house and laughingly said I broke my arm. I pushed and pulled on his arm and sometimes he would say " ouch". I debated for a couple of hours about going to ER. He was not complaining at all. I finally took him to ER. Doc pushed and pulled too all he got was an ouch. Dr said he did not think it was broke but did x-ray and the big bone in forearm was broken totally in half! (I will add that both my son and I have an extreme high tolerance to pain..actually too high). He broke several bones during childhood and never a tear...lol

Re: LSU QB breaks arm in freak accident.

Aug 8, 2021, 3:22 PM

Assuming he’s right handed so that’s a little better but still rough path. Mainly depends how close to the joint he fractured it. If it’s the shaft, he can rehab better and faster with likely less stiffness. If it’s near or into the elbow joint (a little more likely if it was “open” or “compound” (bone sticks out of the skin)) lots more stiffness and slower recovery. If it’s “comminuted” (shattered) vs “simple” (one fracture line) that will make a difference as well
And yes flip flops and docks/ lawnmowers/ construction are a terrible idea and a good way to meet me unexpectedly…

I truly hate to hear it for the kid. He caught a lot of blame for their season last year when he played pretty well. Then he missed time and the Freshman looked like Burro vs U of SC.
