LSU 17-7; OSU 14-7

Jan 2, 2021, 12:14 PM

Both of these games started the same with us looking unstoppable on offense, and salty on defense. And both ended the same in that we literally didn't stop them again, and rarely sustained another drive.

It appears in both these games we had better "scripts" coming in, but they adjusted while we seemingly did not whatsoever.

Thoughts?

It's the Jimmys and Joes. Clemson can dominate in the ACC. Look at the SEC, 20 years, 11 NC by 4 different teams. The ACC is not close to anything like that.

We’d walk the dog over the rest of SEC outside Bama. Stop that tired argument SEC homer.

Went 1 and 1 against ND. Would have the same win percentage in the SEC.

SEC had 5 teams out of 14 with winning records this year.

I think this speaks to the depth and talent issue

Jan 2, 2021, 12:28 PM

That is being discussed in a few other threads this morning.

Motivation and coaching gameplan is not the issue based on how well we start.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Definitely a good argument to be made there

Jan 2, 2021, 12:32 PM

Perhaps we started well in spite of our disadvantages, as you mentioned.

We still don't really know how good OSU is, but will soon find out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It DOES matter who a team plays...

Jan 2, 2021, 12:34 PM

...in the regular season i.m.o. It's not Clemson's fault that the rest of the ACC sucks. Clemson has breezed through the ACC for the most part the last few years with little resistance. It's not likely to change either and this COULD BE part of the reason Clemson has come up short the last two years...

What about 2018?

Jan 2, 2021, 12:42 PM

2019? 2015? 2016?

I think we just ran into a buzzsaw just like LSU, but not seeing a huge correlation between strength of ACC and strength of Clemson.

We were down 16 - 0 and beat OSU last year**

We did get a lot of help through the refs to be honest, and we had the playmakers like Higgins and Ross to do it

Both games had the opportunity to be put away in the 1Q and we couldn’t do it. We missed an easy TD opportunity in both games which would’ve put us up 24-7 and 21-7 respectively. Can’t exactly remember the play against LSU, but last night Lawrence missed the TE who had a lot of green in front of him. Granted, it was due in part bc the OSU LB was in his face, but nonetheless, we couldn’t capitalize early.

This team also seems to act differently when the pressure is on when compared to the Watson era teams. We seem to retreat when things start going against us, other than last year’s OSU game I can’t think of another game where we were able to overcome what seemingly wasn’t our night. Think this is due in part to the youth of the team as a whole.

Finally, both LSU & OSU had the stars aligned for them. LSU managed to put together the greatest CFB season ever & played the game in their own backyard. OSU wanted this rematch since last January and it was evident they had been game planning for Clemson for more than just the week of preparation. Had the opportunity to put the games away early in both, got hit in the mouth back, and couldn’t seem to recover

To get wallopped by those point totals and point to a missed score and some random reasons is not really looking at the situation. You think OSU spent the year planning to play? You think both teams had the "stars allign"? It was two direct punches in the mouth. Beat by 17 and 21 is not stars aligning. Its getting beat when you play the next level.

I dont understand what you meant by "You think OSU spent the year planning to play?" I think they spent a lot of time in their 4 extra weeks at the beginning of the year and their 5 weeks off preparing for a Clemson game plan especially on taking BV calls out of the game.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BV usually has an outstanding gameplan, but seems to lack

Jan 2, 2021, 12:51 PM

in-game adjustments and our offensive gameplans usually suck and we need our NFL guys to overcome it

Ohio State was just better. Clemson looked and played soft. OSU won in the trenches - established a running game which opened up the pass, and on D got pressure on TL all night long. TL did really well actually, given he was under so much pressure, but even he could only do so much.

Day had Venables all figured out, both gameplan and to mitigate the sign stealing. Clemson's D looked lost most of the night. The Clemson O played ok, but it's hard to stick to a ###### when you're down 3 TDs at halftime. Everything has to be forced at that point and Clemson simple couldn't maintain that level of play throughout the 2nd half, not that many teams could.
