I got my information regarding the first colors on the football jerseys from the little book given to us at the beginning of the freshmen semester, known then as "Rat Season". In addition to getting a haircut similar to "boot camp" for the army we wore orange beanies called "rat hats". We were required to memorize the contents of the little book and be prepared to answer questions from the upper classmen on its contents.
Funny how some of that information has stuck in my brain better than stuff taught in my classes!
