Lost one of “Coach Howard’s Boys” today

Feb 6, 2020, 6:19 PM

Gil Rushton passed away this afternoon, a few days shy of his 92nd birthday. Gil was a 4 year letterman in football and track, and played on 2 undefeated Clemson teams (48 & 50), and was an ACC “backjudge” for 32 years. Gil was tough....Can you imagine try to keep up with those “frisbee catching dogs” in your 60’s. He was also in the US Army stationed in Japan during the occupation in 46 & 47. After service, he and Betty lived on the top floor of Fike Field House with 3 other couples. They all shared a bathroom, with no kitchen facilities. The boys would bring back scraps from the training table for dinner. It was a different time, and they would often speak of it with great fondness. Gil was a loyal Tiger, volunteering as an IPTAY representative for many decades, and serving as the first president of the Letterman’s Club. Gil would tell great stories of those old times. He will certainly be missed by this Tiger

Yep, Gil was truly the epitome of the Clemson Man. He & my dad we’re teammates on both those teams and both of our families started on that 3rd floor of Fike. We tailgated together for over 40 years. We will miss him greatly but he leaves a rich legacy wrapped up in the Clemson Family

So sorry to hear this. He was a good man as were many others on those post WWII teams. I recall those years with fondness.
