Still some questionable play calling esp. near end of first

Oct 31, 2021, 5:26 PM

half and 4th quarter. Why that terrible draw play with about a minute left in first half? Why not try to get in field goal range or even hail mary instead of giving ball back with 45 secs. left? Second straight week with this mistake.
In second half, on second and 9 or ten at least twice, they handed the ball to Shipley on same play that left 3 and 5 or 6, which D.J. often has a hard time converting.
Kobe Pace coming back will be a relief for Shipley, who had to run too many times in 4th quarter.
How about alternate Pace and Mafah and use Shipley more at slot, as he was getting open almost every time. DJ practicing to have more catchable passes will really help, his darts are too hard too quick for catching or running after the catch.

Ithink your Pace / Mafah comment with SHipley in the slot is a good one. He can be a weapon as a distraction at times too. Pop passes, toss sweeps, misdirection etc. Just give them more weapons to defend and worry about. I suspect we will see this some as Pace becomes available.

Agree. Briningstool chance at big gainer if he leads him more. Tight Ends were 3 targets, 3 catches... Why only 3? It was open at the end of the half. Why no ship in the slot? Why not put Stellato in the slot and get him ready. Nothing like in game reps. Red shirting him makes no sense. If he's as good as advertised, he's here 4 yrs max. If he doesn't pan out or gets beat out, he'll transfer in 2 years. Get the boy in the game.

Maybe, just maybe, he's not ready to get in the game yet. Are you at practice? You know what's going on with the kid? I understand your frustration, but there's a reason he's not out there and Dabo was a WR coach and knows more than any of us about what's going on behind the scenes. Stellato has only played high school ball so far.

How in TF did Pitt hold the ball for the last 8+ minutes of our loss to them….but we couldn’t hold the #### thing for 1:40 seconds without giving it back??

The offense (minus Shipley) still sucks. They’re just not quite the glaring train wreck they were earlier this season.

While the "ellidiot" comment makes you seem childish, your concern about calling the slip screen is nevertheless worthy of some thought:

The slip-screen, when blocked properly and not run every sixth play, is an effective play in the arsenal. (T.Elliott does not call this play very often ... i.e., he does not suffer from the Rob Spence obsession with this play.)

(1) Do you call this play on occasion to see if the teaching & coaching during practice is finally catching on?

(2) Do you give up on the play (because our WR's are either still too unskilled to block [A.Ajou] or not yet physically developed for adequate blocking [E.J.Williams])?

In theory, the more a play is practiced & run, the better the execution. This is usually the case (again, as long as it isn't run every 6th or 8th play as in the R.Spence era).

However after 8 (count it ...EIGHT) games and the continued failure, maybe it should be shelved for remainder of 2021 and dusted off in Spring practice and will hopefully be blocked properly in 2022.

There was a little progress. Wr’s did not drop easy balls. I think the recurring issue is no adjustments at the half. Our second half offense is worse than the first half. That’s tough to swallow considering how poorly we execute.

Hum! I know I'm not the brightest star in the morning sky, or even know ( or is that no)more than our esteemed( my ex liked to use that word and we have been divorced since that guy named Lincoln ,no wait Ford won a National Championship) OC, but I would like to know how he is seeing progress ,yet the same old mistakes keep happening game after game after.....well I hope you get my point, which is if you keep having the same old engine problems ,well maybe you either need a new mechanic or a new car.

I'd love to see a yards per screen play stat for this season

Nov 2, 2021, 7:06 AM

I'd bet money that it is less than 1 yards/play. Maybe even negative
