LOL @ Ryan Kantor article

Nov 22, 2022, 10:00 AM

That "article" is more along the lines of an everyday poster making a post and in parenthesis next to the subject has (long post). Of course this fits the TigerNet business model of mostly click bait content.

#2 and #3 in the "article" are valid concerns. The failure to utilize the portal part of the "article" leaves a lot to be desired due to poor research, or lack of contacts in the program, or a combination of both. What offensive linemen, particularly Center were the coaches supposed to pull out of the portal that's better than what we have? It's well known the staff went after 2 offensive linemen they felt could help us. Both targets understandably went to programs that have a much better reputation of putting O-linemen in the NFL. We only have 2 seniors on the entire 2 deep so the decision to develop what we currently have instead of reaching is the correct one. BTW, our O-line is much improved over the course of the season and will reap benefits in 2023.

Much like O-line what WR's were we supposed to pull out of the portal? The only way you get a difference maker at WR is if you're recruiting (tampering) with another teams roster....see USC and Jordan Addison. The good ones have already had contact with their intended destination(s) before they hit the portal. It would be a shock if our staff ever started recruiting players from other programs.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

UVA transfer Center (Oltuwatimi or something like that) who ended up at Michigan:

This guy is a stud center that we pursued via the portal, but we didn't get him.

Fortunately, Will Putnam has been a smashing success at Center, and it looks like he'll take a COVID year and come back for a 5th season in 2023.

From what I've read, this guy is smart (and also comes from a very good family). In other words, the kind of person that fits Dabo's vision of the Clemson profile player.

WR? I don't know of any, but it's hard to argue that we didn't hit the recruiting jackpot with Antonio Williams and may have also done so with Adam Randall.

Before calling our highly selective use of the portal as a failure in strategy, let's see which WRs we get via the normal recruiting process.

Any one know why Randall has played so little ? I know he had an injury early on but since then, very little mention.

He is developing and on schedule.

Gonna be a good one. Had a great catch on Saturday along the sideline.

It's only been ~ 8 months since he tore his ACL.

Nov 22, 2022, 3:05 PM [ in reply to Re: LOL @ Ryan Kantor article ]

He made his debut against La Tech on 9/17 which is super impressive considering it'd only been a little over 5 months. I'd highly doubt he's 100% and is still working himself back to where he wants to be as a player. It takes time both mentally and physically to come back from that injury.

For perspective, Jameson Williams was just activated off IR and is practicing for the first time this week. It's been ~ 11 months since he tore his ACL.

Just ended my paid membership for this and more. Lazy piece using TigerNet rants as source material. The whole product has slowly diminished.

I’ve also personally come to the conclusion that the site employees generate click bait on the boards.

On my I-phone this morning, I wake to a half screen pop up box scrolling up from the bottom, and a half screen following add taking up the entire top of the screen. Can’t read TNet , but hey I may hit Best Buy today!

I still enjoy the forum overall, but I won’t monetarily support it anymore.

there is also the aspect that significant portal use has a cost. Players become a commodity instead of a valued asset and respond accordingly. Ryan came from STS where they believe in the UGA/Bama model having preached it for years. Basically, it's a win at all cost model which would never be supported by Dabo. Not sure why we need to continually have this argument as Dabo is not going to change and i am not convinced he should change given his success.

Basically there is not a single person who support this change who has ever won a FB game as a college HC.

I'm not sure if you've read my past STS articles or are thinking about the pre-2016 Dr. B era over there generally and assuming I agree with their opinions, but I expressly wrote an article about how winning at all costs is bad and I am against it:

I don't think the portal has affected us at all.

Nov 22, 2022, 11:13 AM [ in reply to Re: LOL @ Ryan Kantor article ]

Are you suggesting we should have benched the QB, or an OL, or a WR for a guy who wasn't happy with playing time at another school? The transfer guys who actually cone in and start are extremely rare. We don't have a need for any starters.

Re: I don't think the portal has affected us at all.

Nov 22, 2022, 11:25 AM

Yep. “The transfer guys that come in and start” knew their destination before entering the portal. They deny it but it’s blatant tampering by those schools.

Most that enter the portal not already knowing where they’re headed won’t help us.

I was just worried to death about this same thing

I don't want to do anything just because Alabama does it but you'd be hard-pressed to find a better example. Year in and year out they are Top 5 in recruiting yet they pulled 4 players out of the portal this year. They have talent everywhere but they still see opportunities to get better and use everything at their disposal, including the portal, to make that happen. Saban will always seek an edge to maintain an edge and I think that makes a lot of sense.

questionable teams that should have been sure "W"s. How exactly did the portal help?

A down year for them for sure but kind of hard to argue with the track record.

Well it would be easy for them to say they would have four losses if they didn't use the portal. Impossible to know either way.

Bama recruits other rosters and still has the same issues we have at receiver. Even with Bryce Young, Bama only averages 272 passing YPG to our 228. Lose in the post season and Bama will have a season similar to our 2021 and was a whisker away from having a worse season than our 2021. Did you know Bama's reception leader is a running back they "recruited" off of Georgia Tech's roster?

Like I said our staff will not recruit other rosters and that's not going to change nor should it under Coach Swinney.

I see your point but most if not all of those guys were originally recruited and offered by Alabama so those relationships do exist. Hard to say for sure who contacted who first.
