Vehicle tax - high mileage discount

Sep 24, 2015, 2:38 PM

I've got about 5,000 miles to go before my car is classified as "high mileage" and eligible for a tax discount. The problem is that my taxes are due on October 31. Thinking I should take a couple long trips before then so I can really stick it to Anderson County. Just want to be sure that fuel taxes are paid to state and not county, right?

For the record, I believe this is how the county/state

determines high mileage for a vehicle. Of course they do not assume if you had high mileage in 2014 that you will have it again in 2015. You have to prove it each year b/c government.

I go get this every year because drive 25k miles per year.

Sep 24, 2015, 2:50 PM

I think it saved me $25 last year. They have never bothered to go out and check my mileage.

No property tax, no income tax....moot point here.

Downside, 9.5% uncapped sales tax on car purchase price.

registered.

aka, if you move here, have residency here, and buy a car outside of TN, TN will still have their hand out for almost 10% when you go to register it.

Only way around it would be to have it initially titled/registered in SC, pay the $300 sales tax, then transfer the registration to TN. Obviously we're discussing illegalities here, but it's purely hypothetical of course.

SC state law called "Rollback Taxes". They back-taxed my land (no house) as if it had a house on it for 3 years. Then they sent the notice to the wrong address. I never saw it. They put a big pink sign in my yard saying "Delinquent Tax - Tax Auction"
